With a human skull in the garden?

Slippersandacuppa · 07/05/2016 20:45

Because I've never been in this situation before.

We've been tidying up the garden and have piles of rubble all over the place. One of our rickety old fences borders a graveyard (very old belonging to ancient church) and I'm assuming the skull sort of drifted under our fence and has been near the top of the soil for a while. I hope.

I've googled but can't seem to find much info. I'll be contacting the parish council on Monday but wondered if it warrants a call to 101 (or whatever it is) to register it just in case it's not a graveyard wanderer Confused

Anyone had a similar experience?!

Halloween will be amazing at your house this year if they let you keep him.

I used to work for a company that dug up bodies/bones for forensics etc. My job was answering the phones to the very special kind of weirdo who wanted to know if we'd sell them any recordings of the diggings.

catbrushblanket · 09/05/2016 20:18

OP, please may I come? I will bring cake :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2016 20:36

I'd love to do a dig! I'll bring homemade wine and forecast the weather for the day.

HookedOnHooking · 09/05/2016 20:54

Between us we could do a really ^really* good dig.

elephantoverthehill · 09/05/2016 21:43

If everyone does dig, OPs garden will be covered in poppies in the summer.

shinynewusername · 09/05/2016 22:32

Check out the last photo on this page. The holes look very similar. Although the skulls in the link are weird shapes due to head bindings (because life wasn't hard enough in sixteenth century Peru..), it says that the holes are thought to be natural and for blood vessels, even though most skulls don't have one in this spot. It sounds as if they think it is a normal variant.

Slippersandacuppa · 09/05/2016 22:39

Hmm. Yes, I see. Very interesting. (I love how seriously you're all taking this!)

I'm going to put the slightly bigger one up. Please bail me out if I'm arrested.

I think I'm too clumsy to get involved in a dig. I'd break something. But I can help with the cake baking. Choc brownies anyone...?

SilverBirchWithout · 09/05/2016 23:13

I do find the discolouration around the hole interesting, has anyone any thoughts on this?

Slippersandacuppa · 09/05/2016 23:21

Rust from a recently removed spike?

Poor YS.

SilverBirchWithout · 09/05/2016 23:26

Could a spike from the fence railings have caused it when the fence was installed, I wonder? It is a bit too small though.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 09/05/2016 23:43

Ancient nail gun injury.
From the photos of xrays of nail gum incidents, they look to go into.the skull quite cleanly.

So proof the mail gun has been around longer than we thought.

Oo oo oo!!!!!!

Can I come and dig too?

Ps... Brought a new kitten home today, was trying to persuade the DSs to name him Yorrick Slingshot in honour of your dearly departed friend, but they called him Apex instead. Kids these days have no idea about decent pet names!

Plus,
I just think you all ought to know I'm lying under my velux window and it's tipping down outside and I'm getting wet, so I should really get up and close the windows.

ouriana so you can tell the hole happened before death? How fascinating.

SilverBirchWithout · 10/05/2016 00:18

It does look like rust around the hole and maybe a bit of a depression in the same area? It does make me wonder whether it was some sort of medical procedure.

Slippers you say "because I've never been in this situation before...." which amused me no end. What is the etiquette for handling skulls?

Poor YS. Pretty cool for you guys, though.

porosity of the skull leading to tiny holes which is caused by iron deficiency and anaemia

I'm anaemic just now have been for a while

HookedOnHooking · 10/05/2016 09:12

This is so interesting. I'm fascinated.

Today is my day off. I have important Things To Fo. But fear they will be left neglected as I learn about bones and stuff.

I'm learning so much from this thread! I've been on and off again anaemic for years, well over a decade, wonder if I'm getting holes in my head!
