AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

Ditto Collaborate. We've had fences replaced on both sides and it never involved digging plants up. We did lose a couple here and there from being stood on etc but nothing unreasonable. Oh, and it was all discussed beforehand (weeks, not the night before), access was agreed (terraced)and they brought their own power with them.

It's one thing agreeing to losing the odd plant, it's quite another to be informed that they'll have to go.

SavoyCabbage · 03/08/2015 12:43

Now that the subject of plants has been raised, you have to get 'weeping into my bush' into the conversation somehow.

PeanutsOnTheFloor · 03/08/2015 12:52

they will have to wee in NDN's garden Of course it might not just be a wee - that would serve them right!

cabbagesouppirate · 03/08/2015 12:55

Make sure you take photos of your plants on your side or otherwise they can just deny it all!

scribblescrabble · 03/08/2015 13:01

My experience with builders is that they shit, alot! especially on a Monday morning ..... I am actually willing them to download in your cheeky bastard ndn bushes, that'll learn 'em, :) :) :)

FryOneFatManic · 03/08/2015 13:18

Cheeky devils, there's no need for gardeners to have access to either property, usually their tools aren't wired. They'll have to eat, drink and piss at the local cafe it they don't bring their own grub.

OOAOML · 03/08/2015 13:31

We don't have workmen in much, but when we had someone in to plaster/paper/paint he brought his own sandwich and flask, and he did take a couple of hot drinks from us but didn't seem to expect us to provide anything. I'd assume most workmen will bring food but provision of biscuits/tea/coffee makes the work go better. Provided by the person employing them, of course, not the neighbours!

PLUtoPlanet · 03/08/2015 13:35

I'm astonished at what they are demanding, with no evident grounds. Talk about a misplaced sense of entitlement!

howtorebuild · 03/08/2015 13:38

I don't understand why they don't use rechargeable tools.

TheReluctantCountess · 03/08/2015 13:49

I hope this isn't the start of a big unfriendly situation.

PLUtoPlanet · 03/08/2015 14:09

I hope this isn't the start of a big unfriendly situation.

Pushing back against entitled behaviour like this is exactly the right thing to do, though, otherwise who knows what the bastards might demand next!

yorkshapudding · 03/08/2015 14:51

Reluctant, I'm going to try very hard not to turn it into one as I really can't be arsed with that sort of thing. Will be telling them firmly but politely that I think they've handled this whole thing badly and we would appreciate a bit of consideration in future but i'm not about to go to war with them over it. Life's too short.

RosePetels · 03/08/2015 17:13

YANBU at all

ilovelamp82 · 03/08/2015 17:21

Shameless place marking to find out what happens when they get back.

yorkshapudding · 03/08/2015 17:44

Just found out that after I and other neighbour said no the builders went to the next door but one neighbour to ask to "borrow a power source"! How far down the street were they planning to go? Confused

Next door but one neighbour also said no by the way. His exact response was "I don't even know their names, why would I pay for you to do work on their house?" Can't argue with his logic really.

Wonder which of you the neighbours are going to blame for the work not being done?

HermioneWeasley · 03/08/2015 18:24

I can't wait to hear how cheeky/entitled NDNs react to this!

chippednailvarnish · 03/08/2015 18:27

I think you have an opportunity to make some money.
£2 a pee
£4.50 for a crap
£10 for 30 mins of electricity
£1 for a cup of tea

It could be a winner!

Muddlewitch · 03/08/2015 18:35

They must have a very long extension lead!

rollonthesummer · 03/08/2015 18:36

I'm amazed-what a bloody cheek! Have they finished or will they be back tomorrow?

JammyGem · 03/08/2015 18:36

So did they just carry on without power?

Your NDN are taking the piss, am glad to hear all your other neighbours said no too!
