For my 15 and 16 year old sons?
(If not a very healthy one but that's not my question Grin)

Ham and cheese salad sandwich, a frube and a wafer bar.

I am doing the next 2 weeks packed lunches for the freezer and this is being hotly contested in my house right now Grin

I always thought you couldn't freeze salad??

PurpleDaisies · 06/06/2015 18:04

At 15/16 aren't they old enough to be making their own lunches?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 06/06/2015 18:09

Freezing cheese and / or ham sandwiches is fine. But I'd add the salad quickly on the day.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 06/06/2015 18:10

You get the sandwich out in the morning. It keeps the lunchbox cooler and fresher and is defrosted and fresh at lunch time (although salad won't be good).

Not the point of the thread I know but why are you making their packed lunches?! I made my own from secondary school age. Surely 15 and 16 is old enough to make their own?!

BillyBigchin · 06/06/2015 18:13

My 14 year old DSS would not be pleased if that was his lunch! That's a wee snackette for a teenage boy Grin

TwinkieTwinkle · 06/06/2015 18:13

Please, please, please share how you freeze sandwiches!

bloodyteenagers · 06/06/2015 18:13

Frozen sandwiches.. Why?
Just bread is a bit odd after defrost. Great for toast but bit soggy.

Don't want to make their sandwiches. They are old enough to make their own. Fuck freezing them, tell them from Monday everyone is responsible for doing their own pack lunches.. Their future partners will thank you

FenellaFellorick · 06/06/2015 18:13

Salad actually freezes fine. It is all diced up and made into a mix with the ham and cheese and it works surprisingly well.

Or maybe they have low standards Grin

Yes they are old enough but this is easier for me. I won't bore you with the details but due to their sn everything takes ages and is a faff and I have enough of that and I just want to Chuck sandwiches in a freezer and be done with it Grin

I accept the mn verdict that my lunches are indeed mean and I'll stick another sandwich in.

I think the real question here is why on earth are you making their lunches at that age!

I'd be hungry though, I'd eat the wafer in the morning then be disappointed at lunch. Add some fruit and crisps and you're fine.

lemoncurd20 · 06/06/2015 18:15

Also, as it's a roll, do people actually eat two rolls? What about sandwiches, would you eat 4 slices of bread's worth?

momb · 06/06/2015 18:18

I freeze sandwiches too, but have never tried it with the coleslaw already in. Doesn't it go slimey OP?

I have petite girls and one baguette would be more than enough for them, but the bigger SDs would eat more than that. Can I ask why you bought wheat free chocolate bars to serve with bread? I know they are on special offer in Tesco at the moment but the wheat ones are still cheaper (and slightly more filling).

Heyho111 · 06/06/2015 18:20

Why are you asking here about if that's enough ?
If they say they are still hungry - it's not enough !
Not sure why you don't believe them or am I missing something

FenellaFellorick · 06/06/2015 18:20

Because they can't eat gluten. The rolls are also gluten free.
This is possibly why they dont complain about the food It simply isn't possible for gf bread to get any more horrible Grin

OP posts:
redcaryellowcar · 06/06/2015 18:23

A bit off topic of portion size but when I was at seconday school and my dmum had a busy job she used to freeze those cheese topped rolls with ham in them, they were fine, think I would do two per day for hungry teenagers.

CakeNinja · 06/06/2015 18:23

Nowhere near enough!
Blimey, they're nearly grown men Shock
My dds are 9&11 and make their own lunches. They have 5 items in there.
Also, not that you asked and I know it isn't the point of the thread but the sugar content will cause them to crash and feel hungrier than they would be if the components were different, not necessarily more food.
Appreciate with the sn that they may not be open to other food types.
But the fact they don't think its enough food is all you really need to know!

GF bread really is horrible though, I agree there Grin

FenellaFellorick · 06/06/2015 18:24

Because they cant always tell when they are full. My youngest in particular compulsively eats and isn't able to regulate himself. My husband eats like a pig (and stays slimish at me the git ) and thinks they should have as much as they want and I wanted an outside view because sometimes it's nice to reachinto the main world and see what other people think. Just to keep an idea of what's 'normal' (with big '' on)

OP posts:
WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 06/06/2015 18:28

I don't think that would have been enough for me at that age and I was a size 6 whippet. I would have had a sandwich/roll/pasta salad with maybe a yoghurt, fruit, some chopped up veg and some sort of savoury snack.

I'm clearly in the minority, as I've already said I think it's suitable as lunchbox food.

Ds3-15 eats a healthy, substantial breakfast and evening meal, he eats a bowl of pasta or a chicken burger at school , lunch is a pit stop.

MrsMook · 06/06/2015 18:46

I'd say a bit small too. I had a crazy appetite as a teenager and was a tiny twig.

I'm with you on freezing sandwiches. I used to do it in my days of casual supply teaching so I could grab lunch and be out of the house within 10 mins of a phone call.

JohnCusacksWife · 06/06/2015 18:52

I think if you add in a bit of fruit that's fine. Way more than I could eat at lunchtime anyway!
