Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

Op hope dd appt goes well. Look forward to your update. Really not worried how close you are to me...no not at all!!

TTWK · 14/05/2015 08:56

Leave it alone. It's fantastic. Probably the cocoon of a large moth, like a poplar hawk. Awesome. It's doing you no harm and won't do when it hatches.

Live and let live.

FyreFly · 14/05/2015 08:58

I still don't think its "alive"-alive. We have quite a few hawkmoths round this way and I've never seen anything quite like that. Especially with the mold / black dust around it. My money is still on a fungus!

Hobby2014 · 14/05/2015 08:59

I really hope it's a lovely moth and you can somehow get a photo when it hatches but before it flies away demanding, I know.

CocktailQueen · 14/05/2015 09:03

Hmm, I don't like all the black dusty stuff - if it is a cocoon, then I've never seen one with mould round it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/05/2015 09:05

You need to read Squelch by John Halkin. Classic of the giant killer moths with man-eating caterpillars genre.

SnottySundays · 14/05/2015 09:08

Er... Where in the Midlands?! (Please say North...)

Ahem. Hope your DD is ok by the way and outpatients not too bad (if BCH we were there on Tuesday). How is she after her operation?

TheSultanofPing · 14/05/2015 09:11

I agree with FyreFly
It looks more like a fungus to me, although I'm no expert on these things.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/05/2015 09:11

Am I the only one who's itchy now?

TheTravellingLemon · 14/05/2015 09:15

BitOutOfPractice no, you're not alone.

grapejuicerocks · 14/05/2015 09:15

Will there be anything left of your home/surrounding area when you get back?

Hope appointment goes well, but approach that corner with trepidation. There may be a scene of devestation, when you turn it.

grapejuicerocks · 14/05/2015 09:16

devastation

Gimmesomemore · 14/05/2015 09:17

This talk of moths reminds me of a huge mother fucker moth that flew into our kitchen at our old house.

It was the size of a small bird and so "in your face" flappy. We thought it went back out that evening.

However, it emerged the next night in its full glory from behind the fridge. I was upstairs cowering whilst dh ushered the monster out with a broom.

I love wildlife and would never intentionally harm a living creature. But that moth was from another dimension.

BigRedBall · 14/05/2015 09:21

Holy poo. Has anyone seen the film Mimicry? I just hope there's not a moth countrymummy in there Confused

Bambambini · 14/05/2015 09:21

Email your pics to the Natural Hidtory Museum or some such society!

TheTravellingLemon · 14/05/2015 09:21

I have a bit of an issue with butterflies in that I absolutely can't stand them. I was in Borneo a few years ago and there was one the size of a dinner plate on the wall. .

I don't really like moths either, but butterflies are worse. Let's hope it's some kind of alien.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 14/05/2015 09:22

This.Is.The.Shit.Of.Nightmares

I'm itching. Confused

And please don't bomb the Midlands. I live in the Midlands and I've never seen any shit like this. Just bomb CountryMummy1 's house Grin before it infects us all!!!!

Bambambini · 14/05/2015 09:22

Does look like some kind of fungus though.

WidowofBrid · 14/05/2015 09:27

My money's on some sort of fungus...when we had dry rot there were some pretty impressive blooms pretty quickly yes I know you don't care about my rot but needed to place Mark

TiggyD · 14/05/2015 09:30

Looks fungal to me. Terrifying, but fungal.

TheEggityOddity · 14/05/2015 09:31

This does have Daily Fail written all over it. And with the story money you can buy a new house. You will need to anyway as the moth men will I assume want to upgrade from their outhouse into your actual house once they pupate.

FyreFly · 14/05/2015 09:34

OK, now I've seen a proper picture on my laptop, I am 100% positive it is a fungus. It looks far too dull, asymmetrical and dirty to be a pupa. Plus it looks like it's bloomed out of the wall, and is flat against the wall, whereas I'd expect a pupa to be completely 3D on all sides if you see what I mean?

EnjoyTheSimpleThingsInLife · 14/05/2015 09:36

Fucking hell I have never seen anything like that. I can't stop itching now!

londonrach · 14/05/2015 09:37

Enjoy dont watch legos video!!

EnjoyTheSimpleThingsInLife · 14/05/2015 09:42
