I am male, mid 20's and grew up with this technology.
Wondering what something means?
Wondering how to do something?
Wondering how your kids did something?
Wondering if you should let your kids do something?

Did anyone else get obsessed with 'Elite' on their Commodore 64?

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 12/02/2015 22:16

I'm doing JS evening classes, just started on AJAX (how appropriate). JS was a complete headfuck at first after HTML and CSS but I'm really getting into it now. And doing fun little projects like making a Choose Your Own Adventure game and a basic search engine.

I also spent 10 or so years responsible for a UNIX database and given the crapness of the support system, taught myself to go into the innards and do basic maintenance when necessary.

When you can wipe an entire hard drive just by pressing the wrong key and the system has no checks in place - now that's scary.

Usual, usual, USUAL! I've got it!

Eureka!

1/0 is infinity! You can use that for your new name!

We had a Spectrum (those were the days) - I watch DD on Scratch now and remember painstakingly typing all that code at her age...Grin

If anyone's looking for a trip down gaming memory lane, the Games Masters exhibition at the National Museum in Edinburgh is excellent.

@Hassled

Forgot to add, she probably naively thinks having the accounts on separate sites will garner her a different audience, and likely doesn't expect people she has as friends on facebook to be viewing her instagram. Even though the two sites are linked. Does she know her instagram can be found as easily as you describe, I think you should ask her.

TheFirstofHerName clearly the unclosed hug was deliberate to demonstrate maximum annoyingness.

OP, can you tell us the b&w film that featured in the JL Christmas advert last year, it took us days to work that out, if only we'd had a young man to help.

TheFirstOfHerName · 12/02/2015 22:20

More than anything it's an image hosting site, that is, it's used for storing pictures for people to link elsewhere. Depending on whether the account is "private" Pictures can be viewed randomly, by anyone, from searching or by following the account in a similar way to twitter accounts. It also has the ability to send images to specific people for only them to see.

The app itself has access to GPS on the phone it is being used on so can capture the physical location the image was taken.

Does that come in pink?

SabrinaMulhollandJjones1984 · 12/02/2015 22:20

I remember Frogger coming out. We had an Atari. When it came out. Before coming out meant something else With Manic Miner, Daley Thompson's Decathlon, space invaders. Those were the days. I am old.

You must hate us, OP. We experienced the beginning. Grin

NormHonal · 12/02/2015 22:21

So, about 16 years ago, I had a conversation with a colleague in California that went:

Her: "so, my friend is working for this start-up that built a new search engine. They want as many people as possible to try it out and let them know what they think."

Me: "well, I'm pretty busy at the moment, but yes, sure, I'll take a look."

Insert guess for name of search engine here:

(Oh, and the building this conversation occurred in is now part of the Googleplex.)

Yep, definite selective blindness.

Does anyone remember telnet?

Staywithme · 12/02/2015 22:22

Oh, LadySybil, that brings back memories. I remember my brother getting that for Xmas. We were hooked at the first game. Course with my brother having a Penis, it meant he was a natural. Hmm Oh that's right I used to whoop his ass! Grin

GiddyOnZackHunt · 12/02/2015 22:23

Oh Empress my colleague deleted everything from a production AIX box. How we laughed. Mostly because he thought it was the prod box but had cocked it up and was actually on a test box.

AnnieMorel · 12/02/2015 22:23

I tell you what I hate - is when posters use @ to address other posters.

It's not twitter, hth.

NormHonal · 12/02/2015 22:23

Remember telnet? I still use it occasionally

ArcheryAnnie · 12/02/2015 22:24

Blacklight, dearie, I was learning how to code 10 years before you were born. (Was in the first class to do it at my all-girls school.)

NormHonal · 12/02/2015 22:24

I remember telnet.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 12/02/2015 22:25

Giddy Grin

I remember Manic Miner! And the days when the browsers of choice were Mosaic and Netscape...

GiddyOnZackHunt · 12/02/2015 22:25

Sing I briefly met Mr Elite, David Braben in a pub once. Was drunk though

usualsuspect333 · 12/02/2015 22:27

Nope won't let me use that either, Tilly.

Maybe Blacklight can help?

NormHonal · 12/02/2015 22:28

Sorry Pacific.
