It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

Viva have you seen Jane Eyre? (Orson Welles, Joan Fontaine). Liz Taylor plays Helen, Jane's friend at the orphanage (who dies). It's almost laughable to see the famous Taylor face on a child's body.

Thanks, Pedant!

How could I have forgotten to mention His Girl Friday. One of the funniest films I've ever seen. I Was A Male War Bride is pretty good too. So are The Philadelphia Story, Notorious, Suspicion and above all Arsenic and Old Lace. Older filmgoers may spot a common theme here....

LouiseBrooks · 09/11/2014 20:00

A certain Archibald Alexander Leach .....

I agree with Enrique this thread is too lovely to lose.

Do we just report it and put we'd like it in classics or moved somewhere else?

LouiseBrooks · 09/11/2014 20:23

I'm with Enrique too.

PedantMarina · 09/11/2014 20:31

To whomever was asking: both the pictures I'd recently posted were of John Mills in Ice Cold in Alex.

I hated the film version of Arsenic and Old Lace. Giving Cary Grant about five minutes to do a double-take was just unpleasant and eye-rolly. And their treatment of his GF/fiancée was appalling - she was a lot ballsier in the stage version - the one on film would never have been more a Nethun than a Mumsnetter.

And thanks for the awwws, guys, yes, DGM was dancing on air all the way home. She has since passed on (IIRC

fanjodisfunction · 09/11/2014 20:37

Kinsey I think I have found my soul mate in you, love the Maltese falcon! and every movie you mentioned.

bof thanks for the heads up on Gilda off to watch it now.

fanjodisfunction · 09/11/2014 20:38

minsy was what I meant to say, bloody auto correct, bane of my life.

Coumarin · 09/11/2014 20:55

Grin you're welcome Pedant

BOFster · 09/11/2014 21:02

I'd be really delighted for this to be moved to Classics. It's been so lovely remembering all these films.

Thanks Pedant.

Raahh · 09/11/2014 21:05

Definitely a vote for classics- a lovely thread.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 09/11/2014 21:17

I reported suggesting a big cup of coffee or a beaker of gin and cold, damp face towel while they peruse. I got a reply and it's to be considered for Classics apparently so please do report and agree if you'd like to see it kept there.

I think it's a thread I'd come back to and browse through time and again Smile

BOFster · 09/11/2014 21:18

Would people mind terribly reporting the thread and asking for it to be moved? Obviously I have all manner of dirt on MNHQ, but I'd rather not bring out the big guns at this stage Grin.

OP posts:
Raahh · 09/11/2014 21:21

I have already asked.

It's such a proper and naice thread, it really deserves a place.

And has made me want to watch lots of films I'd forgotten.

PedantMarina · 09/11/2014 21:27

OK, I've got another nomination. I'm not a big fan of his right-wingism, and I don't think we can use the word "glamour" on him. But when Clint Eastwood got into this clinch with Shirley Maclaine in Two Mules for Sister Sarah, I just about slid off the sofa watching it.

Bear in mind that he thought she was a nun and was clearly sporting some wood trying hard to behave himself after an accidental tumble.

And what a jawline in those days! Scruffy, and in this film stubble-covered, but phwoaar.

OttiliaVonBCup · 09/11/2014 21:31

I watched it only recently.
It was the only thing on the telly, two night in a row.

So I did...

BorderBinLiner · 09/11/2014 21:34

Once upon a time, before the world wide web, a weekly guilty pleasure was to purchase a £1 B&W film on video tape and take it back to my student flea pit.
Everyone used to moan, lurk in the doorway, make a cup of tea then casually sit down and watch Bring Up Baby, Ice Cold, Woman of the Year, etc. I luvres a good film & really miss that casual ' give it a try' without oodles of reviews available before hand.

The Barbican 20 years ago recently had a run of Ealing comedies, it was brilliant to see them on the big screen surrounded by the laughter of strangers.

SirNoel · 09/11/2014 21:39

Agree this thread needs to stay.

Moving into Sexy Grandad territory Confused, Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady (I'm not joking, the 'where the devil are my slippers' at the end makes me swoon)

Help me identify this film from the John Lewis advert?
PedantMarina · 09/11/2014 21:44

I'm sorry, SirNoel, but YABU. Henry Higgins was an entitled twunt and Eliza needed to LTB. HTH.

SirNoel · 09/11/2014 21:47

Totally agree.

But that cardigan ....

ArsenicSoup · 09/11/2014 21:49

The cardigan!? Hmm

BOFster · 09/11/2014 21:50

I just love how he never even pretended to sing Grin
