It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

Oh ok, yes he does.

Birra · 09/11/2014 12:05

What's the answer then?

ArsenicSoup · 09/11/2014 12:06

I take it back.

I'm still massively irritated with John Lewis. Don't they know we are all nerds who would set off on a wild goose chase?

diddl · 09/11/2014 12:07

Answer?
What?
Where?
I've missed it!Sad

ArsenicSoup · 09/11/2014 12:08

It seems that it was (probably) a modern clip made especially for the advert.

ZingOfSeven · 09/11/2014 12:11

Arsenic

you can bet they counted on it!Grin

Angry
Coumarin · 09/11/2014 12:22

It's not an official answer though is it?

I'd be happier with an answer from the ad agency or John Lewis.

ArsenicSoup · 09/11/2014 12:23

Me too

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 09/11/2014 12:51

James Mason was a very beautiful man, but I think his voice is even better than his face. I could just lie down and purr when he speaks. For obvious reasons, North by NorthWest is one of my all-time favourite films.

If he told you he was going to kill you, you would almost go along with it. He's a great villain in NBN; "come along my dear"

SorrelForbes · 09/11/2014 13:01

To sustain us until we receive the official answer.

Here's 7 lovely men (ignore dodgy plot)

Is that Howard Keel? Such scary trousers.

SorrelForbes · 09/11/2014 13:06

It is the gorgeous Mr Keel in dreadful trousers. His auto-biography is an interesting read. He obviosuly was a bit of a ladies' man but he writes in such a gentlemanly way about it Grin. He was terribly in love with Kathryn Grayson but they were both with other people at the time (during Kiss Me Kate). My DM's friend saw him on the West End as Curly in Oklahoma! Swoon.

ArsenicSoup · 09/11/2014 13:10

A week in the 50s west end would be a great use for a time machine.

Raahh · 09/11/2014 13:16

'Seven brides..' has such great songs, I can forgive the dodgy plotGrin

SorrelForbes · 09/11/2014 13:19

I might watch it this afternoon once EP on Sunday is over Blush.

I was a June bride Grin

AntiDistinctlyMinty · 09/11/2014 13:32

I got chosen to do a masterclass with Howard Keel in 1996 - it was one of the best days of my life! He told me I had a beautiful voice and a truly natural presence on stage. I was only 11 and I nearly passed out I was so happy Grin

Cocolepew · 09/11/2014 13:41

This is a great thread, here's Lana Turner in the sobfest The Imitation Of Life

DH actually enquired whether MN had figured out that movie yet. I think he is more intrigued than he would care to admit.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 09/11/2014 13:46

Rock and Doris, eh?

For sheer exuberance these two are hard to beat. Much as I love Fred's dancing, though, he was no sex symbol. Ginger was another matter.
