Growing up in the 70's

I bet there's been one of these before but who remembers stuff about the 70's, looking back to me it was all a bit weird.

So some of my memories.

Mary Mungo and midge, the music in the lift. my orange space hopper, gridsy marbles and clackers.
Dehydrated potato, free milk you had to drink at school.
Playing out from after breakfast until dark or tea.

i remember a dangling down nylon belt which had a pull through metal clip, the leftover bit after the clip dangled down if that makes sense...I'm sure we called them disco belts. don't recall the trousers though!

i think you're right in that they were very end of 70s, early 80's

thenightsky · 16/02/2014 22:04

mumslife. I still have my dangly down belt!! It's red. It has a buckle that fastens by pushing it tight against the material. The long end hangs down. It isn't stretchy.

thenightsky · 16/02/2014 22:07

did anyone else have one of these and consider it the height of sophistication?

I had a jean jacket with sew on 'cool' patches I bought from the ads at the back of Disco 45 magazine.

thenightsky · 16/02/2014 22:20

these

thenightsky · 16/02/2014 22:22

Oh God... I had this very one... it might still be in my sewing box somewhere

PixelAteMyFace · 16/02/2014 22:45

I didn't go to a church school, just an ordinaryone, but we started each day with prayers and a hymn in assembly, always said grace before school lunch, and finished the day by putting our chairs upside down on our desks and saying a prayer (Lord keep us safe this night...)

I remember endlessly burning joss sticks, and wearing musk and patchouli oil.

Silver eye shadow. Burgundy mascara that made me look as if my eyelashes were bleeding.

Permed hair - the coolest kids were all sporting an afro.

American tan tights obligatory with school uniform.

Loads of people with nicotine-stained fingers and hoarse voices. Top deck of the bus in a permanent thick fog of smoke.

Darkesteyes · 16/02/2014 23:01

I didnt go to a church school either ...just an ordinary one and it was the same thing.
I was brought up Catholic though (dont practise) and parents were considering sending me to New Hall (although this was in the 80s but thank Christ they couldnt afford it) i had to have catechism at the local convent alongside my younger brother so that we could have Holy Communion which i didnt have until i was 14 (all the other girls were about 8 years old so in the photos i towered above them.)

Who remembers fag/bubblegum/chocolate machines on the pavement outside sweet shops?

What about picking tar out of the road and moulding figures with it.

Orangeanddemons · 17/02/2014 19:05

Mums life we used to match them to our socks on our rolled up "baggy jeans". I have a photo of me in 1979 wearing all these hideous items, topped off with loafers, nasty small across body bag, and tucked in sweatshirt with rolled up sleeves. The shame.....and an asymmetric bob, a la Phil Oakey....
