I bet there's been one of these before but who remembers stuff about the 70's, looking back to me it was all a bit weird.

So some of my memories.

Mary Mungo and midge, the music in the lift. my orange space hopper, gridsy marbles and clackers.
Dehydrated potato, free milk you had to drink at school.
Playing out from after breakfast until dark or tea.

Was there a supermarket called Queens? I'm sure I remember one opening near my granny's house and me and my sister riding on the trolleys like they were toys. It was a new novelty.

Later we had a chain of supermarkets called Hillards. They got taken over by Tesco in the 80s.

I need a 'like' button for every post on this thread! I was born in 1967 & remember everything mentioned. Green Shield stamps, Pong, going to the seaside in my Uncles Cortina Estate (12 of us in a 5 seater car - a few in the boot with the picnic!!!). I also live in the NW so I remember Blackie the rocking horse in Blackers Dept Store in Liverpool. Thank you so much for starting this thread - so many memories. I also remember Fantasy Island on TV - 'the plane, the plane!!!!'

my dad had an allotment in the 70s and 80s.

talking of supermarkets, was there one called International? and definitely Fine Fare!
Going to record shop Tuesday lunchtime from school to find out what was number 1 and then popping to pub for a quick G&T

MarieJeanne · 16/02/2014 10:16

So many memories. I loved growing up in the seventies.
Does anyone remember Royals?
They were black brogue style shoes. Absolutely must have footwear at my school in the northwest in the late seventies.

MorrisZapp · 16/02/2014 10:26

Fine Fare.

Little paper bus tickets that just said Bus Ticket.

MorrisZapp · 16/02/2014 10:26

This is the age of the train!

thenightsky · 16/02/2014 11:39

I remember lying on the floor and pulling up the zip on my jeans with string or a crochet hook. Everyone wore skin-tight jeans, but for the life of me, I cannot recall seeing anyone with a muffin top. If I wore trousers that tight now I'd had a 2in overhang all round.

Newyearchanger · 16/02/2014 14:51

The shop assistants and friends would also help pull up the string threaded thru the zip
Shock
It was the seventies

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 16/02/2014 15:22

Cheesecloth and denim. I suppose the reason they were so popular was in reaction to nasty man-made fibres so common otherwise. I remember a lot of static electricity from my clothes, especially my nylon nighties!

Darkesteyes · 16/02/2014 17:51

New Year Changer 11.48 mins in.......Knock down Ginger.

thenightsky · 16/02/2014 17:59

God I remember nylon nighties. We didn't know any different. also my mum went out and bought nylon sheets in a lurid turquoise colour from Brentford Nylons in Leeds. Its a wonder I didn't spark a fire when I rolled over Shock

The wall paper in my bedroom was swirly orange. I had white sheets with orange flowers all over. My dad painted my wardrobe and chest of drawers with orange gloss.

In nearly every photo as a small child I'm wearing orange and brown or sometimes yellow and brown.

I had a space hopper. I swear my first bike didnt have tyres.......it had like solid wheels??? My brother had a chopper.

Family car was a datsun stanza with plastic seats. No seat belts. Dad used to take me to primary school on the back of his moped.

Witches hat in the park.....they were banned as you could spin them so fast they'd pop off the pole.

Enough snow for sledging every winter.

NigellasGuest · 16/02/2014 18:54

A chocolate bar called Ice Breaker (mint choc)- TV ad had a ship breaking through icebergs

Nylon nylon nylon EVERYTHING in nylon (nylon nightie crackling in the dark and scaring the hell out of me)

YY to candles all over the place - mum going on about power cuts - having to stay home from school due to power cuts and doing maths in the kitchen - Alpha book and Beta book for maths, Alpha was for the brainier kids I was Beta

YY to big deep freeze in the garage and trips to the freezer shop for great bulk buys of god knows what
