flies swarming at window, no answer door, house chock full of rubbish

that's just it really. Elderly-ish lady living a few doors down, no family nearby, hasn't put her rubbish out this week and no light on this evening.
Am I just being the worst curtain-twitcher ever or is thia actually very concerning? I got the shivers seeing all those flies. Do you think I should ring the council in the morning and see of there's someone who could pop round and check she's ok? I don't think o could cope if it turned out she was suffering in any way and I ignored her. However, perhaps she just likes living in a crap tip? oh dear, what should I do? (off for a fret)

Well done, OP. You've set the ball in motion to hopefully allow this woman to lead a higher standard of life and get the care she needs.

littlewhitebag · 10/01/2014 07:07

Well done OP. You may just have saved a life.

tootssweet · 10/01/2014 07:20

Thank you Thunder - that was a good thing you did. My elderly mum lives on her own far away from me & I hope her neighbours are curtain twitchers like you should anything ever happen to her!

SpottyDottie · 10/01/2014 07:24

Smile well done, Thunder!

SecretNutellaFix · 10/01/2014 07:30

Good call OP.

101 is a fabulous service- I used it a few months ago to get a check done on a friend I had serious concerns about and she got the help that was needed.

I hope this lady gets the help she seems to need so desperately.

GinSoakedMisery · 10/01/2014 07:38

Good result, well done for calling 101.

dunkedbiscuits · 10/01/2014 07:43

Thank goodness she's ok and can now get some help.

We used to live next door to a 90-odd year old (she turns 100 this year!) and she always said that she couldn't have a lie in because if her curtains were still closed late into the morning everyone would think she had 'popped off' during the night! She was more sprightly than me!

CrestaRun · 10/01/2014 07:49

Well Done OP; hope your neighbour recovers well enough to return home if that is what she wants, and that she gets all the support she needs.

PacificDogwood · 10/01/2014 07:53

Thunder - you did a brilliant brilliant thing last night.

I think a kind of neighbourhood watch system to support old people living alone is something we really need and increasingly so.

I moved into a new house last year and an old lady lives next door. Her husband died last February and I mentioned to her daughters that if they ever needed anything doing for their Mum to give me a call as they live several hours away. Anyway, just before Xmas one daughter did call me as she had been phoning her Mum for several days and had got no answer. She was very worried so I went round and banged on the door and got no answer.

The daughter asked me and another neighbour to break in rather than call the police. We did and found the old lady had just gone to the shops and not noticed her phone was off the hook. Later that week the daughter and her Mum gave me a key - just in case. I won't use it without someone else being with me and unless the daughter gives me permission but walking round the old lady's house searching rooms and basement for her was very very hard.

Its difficult, old people have a right to privacy and their independence but at the same time they need support and there just isn't social services resources available.
