Litter of kittens found..paging experts please!

Whilst out and about this afternoon I have found a litter of six kittens in a clump of ivy in the garden of a derelict house.

I estimate them to be about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks old. Their eyes are all open and they look in good shape, other than being totally filthy and riddled with fleas.

Being the soft stupid sod devoted cat lover I am I sat in the garden for three hours at a discreet distance from the nest and waited for the mother to return. Nada. So I packed them into my rucksack, brought them home via the vet (who kindly checked them over), gave them a bath (they were black-bright and stank of urine) and settled them in a box with a hot water bottle / towel.

I have kitten formula from the vet and have fed them about 3-4ml each from a syringe. They all fed well and promptly piddled all over me, which was encouraging, if a bit grim-smelling.

I know to feed them about that much every two hours, to rub their bellies to stimulate their bowels, to keep them warm etc etc. Is there anything else I need to do?

Yours, in anticipation of precious little sleep over the next few weeks,

C

Cailleach they are all absolutely beautiful. Well done to you Grin

Cailleach · 25/11/2013 23:30

Cozie yep, she is gradually getting the idea of meat - she just needs a lot of milk mixed with it to accept it, but that's fine for now.

Next thing to deal with is the the bloody fleas the kittens have tracked in :(

They have been Frontlined and the cats have been Advantaged, but the house is still infested, so tomorrow is Blitz With Indorex day.

Hey ho, it must be done.

It surely must. Just a couple of words of advice if you haven't Indorexed before. Hoover like a Stepford Wife before you spray - and make sure that you have good through air and shut doors behind you etc ie all the H&S stuff on the canister. It's a powerful potion.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 29/11/2013 19:34

Any news, Cailleach? How is grey baby doing? Did the Indorexing go ok?

MrsSchadenfreude · 29/11/2013 20:43

I want to find kittens!

cozietoesie · 29/11/2013 21:01

I don't know about that - if you recall the earlier parts of the thread, poor Cailleach was almost blind with weariness over it.

Cailleach · 30/11/2013 00:09

Hello folks, sorry for radio silence this week: have been ill with a nasty cold and one DD has had the flu, so as you can imagine things have been a bit mental round these parts!

Kittens doing really well...have made a new, much bigger pen for them and they are delighted with it as they have more room to run around. House has been flea-sprayed to death and hopefully that will be the last of the little barstids...

Grey baby is properly weaning now and they have also had their first kitten biccies - albeit well soaked in milk.

My mum is coming round again tomorrow so I may have new photos to post.. if she remembers her camera!

Hope you are all well, cheers for stopping by the thread for updates.

Great! Although I'm sorry about your cold and DD's flu. Have you managed to get some sleep at least?

Cailleach · 30/11/2013 00:36

Cozie the kittens are being fed every 5 hours or so now,so I can get a bit more sleep, otherwise I'd have cracked up totally!

Hoping to take it a bit easier this weekend..

Good.

We'll be hoping to hear Grey Baby's new name soon as well. Wink

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 30/11/2013 15:51

Ooh, lovely update - thanks, Cailleach Smile

Hope you & DD will soon be better

Cailleach · 01/12/2013 14:11

Right! More pics uploaded to Imgur here:

Kittens, again

and more vids here:

In other news, a quick gender check last night revealed that we have two boys (silver tabbies) and three girls (Farrah, grey baby and Minx.)

So I need to think of a new name for Farrah - the vet told me she was a boy, but no! Grey baby is going to be called Ivy, seeing as she was found in a clump of it.

Names for the silver tabs are evading me at the present time...any suggestions?

I have a space for a silver tabby... he will be called Merlin if I ever get round to be mad enough to get another pet :)

cozietoesie · 01/12/2013 14:31

All those (going to be happy) lives that you saved, Cailleach. Wonderful.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 01/12/2013 14:38

I like the names Harvey and George Smile. They're absolutely gorgeous and have grown loads!

JaneEyresHeir · 01/12/2013 14:43

Wonderful photos and videos Cailleach - you are doing such a great job, glad you are getting some more sleep now!

Actually Farrah is a female name to me, because of the actress Farrah Fawcett! But you could always call her Mo!

Suggestions for the tabbies:
Tiger
PJ (short for striped pyjamas....)
Angus
Frodo
Pipkin

  • Merlin is a great suggestion!
TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 01/12/2013 17:30

I have a black female Mo Smile (there were quite a few of those in summer 2012 Grin)

Cailleach · 01/12/2013 21:02

Yes, it's not terribly original is it TheOne :) Time for a name change, but to what...inspiration ain't really striking me with Little Black Cat...

Thanks for the suggestion of "Angus" and "Harvey", Soft and Jane.... I have shamelessly stolen those for silver-tabs-with-white-paws and the-other-silver-tabby, respectively.

So we now have Minx, Ivy, Angus, Harvey and....need a name for the little coal-black one...

OP posts:
SoftKittyWarmKitty · 01/12/2013 21:09

The black one is a girl, isn't it? For little girl kitties I like Jessie, Queenie, Minnie and Ruby. Feel free to steal any that takes your fancy Grin.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 01/12/2013 21:22

Gobbolino's sister was Sootica...

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 01/12/2013 21:24

A friend of mine has Inky & Inka

Vev · 01/12/2013 21:40

Sabrina for the black kittie.

They are all very cute.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 01/12/2013 21:48

Sabrina's cat was Salem Saberhagen

Poss a bit of a mouthful Grin

JaneEyresHeir · 01/12/2013 21:53

Oh I'm so pleased you've gone for Angus!
We had a little black cat years ago called Chloe.
What about Coco, Cola, Dolly, Elsie, Lola, Maisie, Nancy or Sadie?
