Things that you used to do as a child repetitively and now think "WTF?!"

The hot chocolate thread got me thinking about this. For some reason, I used to tip a full glass of water onto the carpet, the same patch of carpet, every single day. No clue why. I was asked to stop, but I just did it anyway Confused

I ate chalk too, like the chalk kids draw with. Both of these things happened until high school age?!

Anything utterly random and repetitive you may have done?

My sister and i used to go into the bathroom to mix water, toothpaste (euthymol) and toilet tissue together and drink it! (The tissue was clean btw)

Yes to wiping bogeys under the bedframe.

mamaduckbone · 19/09/2013 20:17

I used to press all the little bubbles in on the bubble textured (anaglypta?sp?) hall wallpaper - and I even coloured the bubbles in behind the sofa once - I did get in trouble for that. Thinking about it we must have had that wallpaper everywhere.

I used to pick the spiky feathers out of the feather pillows and stuff them down the back of the bed.

I also sewed my fingers - I'd forgotten all about that!

trixymalixy · 19/09/2013 20:37

My sister and I used to melt our Easter eggs on the radiator and then lock it off.

I also used to flannel suck and also soak cotton wool balls in freezing cold water and suck it out.

I used to sew thread under the skin on my fingers.

wanderings · 19/09/2013 21:00

I used to wear slippers (and even plimsolls) in bed, to see if they'd still be on in the morning.

And like EduCated, I used to "practise being blind", using a rolled-up t-shirt to cover my eyes.

LynetteScavo · 19/09/2013 21:05

This thread has reminded me I too used to sew my fingers.

I would probably be straight on the phone to a psychologist if my DC did such a thing. Grin

And I used to pick at woodchip wall paper, even in other peoples houses. I probably still would, if I ever saw any

ILovePonyo · 19/09/2013 21:09

solveproblem I work out the distance times now!

This thread is making me laugh so much (and I'm feeling a bit sad as my old cat died today)

I have thought of some WEIRD ones. I used to have a cup of water in my bedroom and when I was in bed I would dip my finger in the cup then put the water on my face to pretend I was 'crying' Hmm
And when I was older I would grow my little finger nail really really long then cut it off and KEEP IT in my jewellery box Shock

God kids are so odd. And this thread is in classics so my confessions will never disappear...

Dontlookbehindyou · 19/09/2013 21:10

I'm another raw sausage eater, I also used to pick off the woodchip wallpaper, make buttercream for a snack, pick off wallpaper, pick my nose and put it under the bed, burn things on the gas hob the list is endless lol

I still pick at pva, I worked in a special needs school and the teachers would save me the glue pots and glue sticks and I'd just sit there and pick the dry glue off, I slightly miss that job, I took ds to a new playgroup the other day an he met his eventual nursery teacher who gave him some painting and gluing to do, the glue sticks were covered in thick dry glue but I was trying to make a good impression so couldn't pick it, ds kept handing them to me and looking confused as he likes to help me pick, next time when no ones looking I'm going to get them!

ZingWantsCake · 19/09/2013 21:11

Lynette

you mean to stick a needle with thread in and push it through just under the top layer of your skin so its painless?

my sister and I used to do that.
I used to sew flowers and hearts on my heels in backstitch and "wear" them till the skin wore off and the thread fell out!

I totally forgot about it!

ILovePonyo · 19/09/2013 21:11

I keep laughing at eating hamster food "to spite my mother" Grin

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 19/09/2013 21:12

I used to eat raw bacon rind Hmm wouldn't dream of doing that now though...ugh!
I also used to screw up sheets of paper from notebooks/diaries etc and shove them behind my headboard for no apparent reason.
I only got found out when I realised there was a mouse rustling round in all the paper at night and I had to call my mum in to get rid of it as the noise was keeping me awake! Grin

LynetteScavo · 19/09/2013 21:24

Yes, just the top layer of skin ZingWantsCake. I remember being fascinated by the small flaps of skin left, when I'd pulled the cotton off.

Why on earth would any child think of doing that in the first place? Was it a '70's thing?

LynetteScavo · 19/09/2013 21:26

Sitting at home, watching TV....Why Don't You..... go out and do something less boring instead...like sew your fingers.

ZingWantsCake · 19/09/2013 21:30
Grin

not sure, but it seems to be an international thing (I'm Hungarian! )

we also used to cut our toenails with pinking shears so our nails were spikey, like crocs teeth!

gosh, all these things I remember doing!

we used to pee in the bath, standing up like boys - got very annoyed that the pee would just trickle down our legs.
and we'd sing The Final Countdown as background music.
I don't know why

OTTMummA · 19/09/2013 21:33

I used to lay on my bed, put the biggest book under my chin and 'tap dance' my fingers in sync with each other, getting quicker and quicker,, used to tap songs and make my sister guess what song.

We used to 'paint' the shed with snails! Poor snails Sad they used to make loads of gooey bright green bubbles.

I used to make daisy chains and then eat them.

I used still do to sit and twist sections of my hair all over and tuck the end bits in and then shake it all out and start again and I wonder why my hair is so shit now Hmm

ZingWantsCake · 19/09/2013 21:41

used to eat snow and wash my face in the first snow (apparently that makes your skin beautifulGrin )

I still do both.
the first one - because I like the taste
the 2nd - I can't stop now, can I?Wink

bluebump · 19/09/2013 21:49

I still sleep with my feet tucked up in the duvet - it started when I was young, not to protect me from spiders like someone above but from lions Grin Hmm

I too used to bite wood, my bead head especially. I used to like to run my teeth along it for some reason.

MadameGazelleIsMyMum · 19/09/2013 21:52

My sister and I used to eat jelly and pass it through our teeth until it was sort of liquified, then spit it out onto the spoon, call it 'medicine' and 'drink' it. WTF?

MadameGazelleIsMyMum · 19/09/2013 21:54

Oh and at Brownies I always wanted to blow the candle out so I could dip my fingertips in the hot wax, wait for the wax to cool, and peel it off!

PowerPants · 19/09/2013 21:58

willsingforcake - am crying laughing at you cooking bacon on a lightbulb.

I too used to sew my fingers and am a child of the 70s.

I also used to use scissors to cut the dry skin off my feet and this was when I was a teenager, I would cut great chunks off and bleed all over the floor.

I will confess one on behalf on my son when he was younger, probably about 4 years old. We noticed a funny smell in his room, after a few days we decided to investigate it.
After sniffing everything in his room we found the source, his pillow.
He had been doing a poo in the loo just before bed but instead of wiping his arse on loo roll he wiped on his pillow, from the arse shaped smudge patterns we guessed he'd been doing it for at least 3/4 days.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 19/09/2013 23:00

Buswanker ShockShockShock

RetroHippy · 19/09/2013 23:32

Thought if some more well now we're in classics it'd be rude not to

Used to eat all the chocolate from around Milky Way bars, then roll up the nougat bit into a ball and suck on it.

Plaited everything. The fringing on the rug, the sofa, my rocking horse's tail and mane. Not just normal plaits, each strand had to have the same number of threads in it. If I had time on my hands the poor horse would have single wool strand plaits, plaited together, then those plaited together. It was a work of art.

Genuinely believed in fairies and left out skirts made of flower petals that I had sewn together. If it had gone in the morning, well, that was proof.

I knew about sex from a friend at a relatively early age (6/7) and used to #ahem# abuse my stuffed toy cat. Only externally you understand. Poor thing. I'll bet frottage wasn't on the job description for 'small child's comforter'.

I can't remember eating anything gross though. You crisp paste munchers make me feel a bit Envy

RetroHippy · 19/09/2013 23:33

Ffs, those were not confessions I wanted immortalising twice Hmm

alltoomuchrightnow · 19/09/2013 23:36

I used to have a very long walk to school and to pass time on the way, would imagine what would happen if i became homeless/ orphaned ( i used to get Jinty and Tammy comics and there were always sob stories about orphaned kids) . I would always be on the lookout for places to potentially build dens for my 'new home' if the worst were to happen, eg bushes, old sheds, .. i read a lot of Enid Blyton's and always wanted to find a hollow tree big enough, so i could live on wild mushrooms, nuts and berries! but i did worry how i'd keep my school uniform clean Hmm
