Great big effing boil on my neck! Help!

BagofHolly · 13/08/2011 12:48

I've NEVER had a boil, ever, and now, 4 days after I go from long hair to a short bob, I've got something that looks like another nipple. It HURTS! I've put metanium on it and it's coming up to a point but there's no head on it. I don't feel too well either but that might be unrelated.

What should I do?! Help!

Really sounds like a carbuncle, what time is your appointment? I am sure the HCA will be able to advise, the main thing is to keep an eye on your temp, if that starts going up get more urgent help.

aftereight · 16/08/2011 12:04

Eeep! And that is WITH an extra dose of antiBs?? Really hope hca doesn't fob you off, that looks seriously infected.
You need one of those plague doctors with a leather cape and long jackdaw beak mask to chase out the evil plague spirits Grin

You poor thing! That looks absolutely awful! You must be in agony.

Looking at the most recent pic you have posted it looks bigger.
I really do think you should see someone again today. If your appointment is early afternoon leave it and go but ask for a Dr to look at it again whilst you are there. Dont get fobbed off or "lost" in the system. Push for a Dr to have another look.

If you appointment is later this afternoon, get on the blower now and get some advice ask to be seen sooner. I really think you need to be seen again though. The fact its going black again does not sound good, although I am no medical expert.

The worrying thing to me is that you say your glands are up - that is your body really fighting this now. Not sure that is a good sign (its kicking arse) or a bad sign the glands are up and your body is flat out fighting this.

Get advice - please!!!

Tinkerisdead · 16/08/2011 12:25

I've been lurking on this as it's fascinatingly gruesome but my god, scroll from the first picture to the most recent and it's shocking. If that's with ab's too that just can't be good. Dons plastic mac and a brolly for when it blows.

What's more upsetting is the fact you had a lovely new hairdo and can't show it off as you have a new head emerging from your neck. Hope the gp can help you more, it looks really sore.

Tinkerisdead · 16/08/2011 12:26

In fact I'd take the photos to the doctor to show how fast it's getting worse despite the ab's!

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 12:39

Hump. Sad

Ouch :(

evenlessnarkypuffin · 16/08/2011 12:48

Is 2/4 the latest picture? I'd take the pictures and go to the doctor again. It doesn't look black anymore but it does look unbelieveably massive. I'd be tempted to go to A&E if the GP is dismissive.

Humpletumple · 16/08/2011 12:58

You've been on fluoxcillin for two days and it's not improving. I think you need IV abs possibly. Go to a HOSPITAL now please.

V funny thread btw. Don't spoil it by going in to septic shock and having your organs shut down.

chimchar · 16/08/2011 13:03

In all seriousness, and I don't want to scare you, or be a drama queen, you must get that looked at.

My mum died from septic shock less than 12 hours after being fobbed off by a doctor. Sad

I really hope you're on the mend very soon. X

piprabbit · 16/08/2011 13:47

That needs some serious treatment - septicemia is horrible.

If the GP doesn't take you seriously, I'd go to A&E.

(my GP did a home visit and said I was fine - I wasn't, I was in fact dying. The out of hours doctor spotted the seriousness of my situation and sent me to hospital - I am very grateful to him).

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 14:04

Chimchar, I'm so very sorry to hear about your mum. That's awful, and such a terrible shock.

So, I've heeded your warnings and am at the docs. DH has the kids and has packed in work for a few hours and I've got my mum to come later. Apt is 2:40 and receptionist said that the HCA will get the doc in to have a look at it and that neither she or the docs had any apts before then so I'd have to wait. She was nice about it and it's only 40 mins so I'm back in the car, about to try for a little snooze.

I can't believe what a saga this is!

Good luck - I think you're right, you need to see this one through to a conclusion today, not get distracted by it all being time consuming. Hope the worth is wait it in the end and you get some proper advice.

diddl · 16/08/2011 14:12

Hope all goes OK.

My arm swelled & the veins were standing out-there was obviously an infection.

But as soon as I walked out of the surgery after they´d lanced it-my arm was back to normal.

Tinkerisdead · 16/08/2011 14:37

If they want to lance in, is it acceptable to ask the receptionist to film it on your mobile for us all to enjoy? I mean its bad, its really bad but lets face it, part of us are all holding out for the pus explosion story are we not?

evenlessnarkypuffin · 16/08/2011 15:06

I hope they sort it for you. It looks terribly painful and with the temp and swollen glands is way beyond DIY territory.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 16/08/2011 15:07

And don't let this put you off short hair.

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 15:11

Now waiting for prescription of clarythromicin and fuscidic acid. HCA straightaway went to get a GP and or was a nice one who sees me with the babies usually. She said that they wouldn't lance it as it already had one hole and that it looked like it was oozing a bit. They made no suggestion about dressings and weren't keen to put anything on it. If it's no better I have to go back on Friday. I have to stay on the flucloxacillin too. GP said I'd probably get thrush as well. Ugh.

I'm going to put another warm compress on it and then put the fucidin on. No one wants a puss explosion more than me! I'm desperate!

whomovedmychocolate · 16/08/2011 15:11

They hardly every burst properly though TheDoctorsWife46. Besides once they have reach that point they basically scoop and pack rather than lance.

Go OP go! Grin

piprabbit · 16/08/2011 15:14

Yeah - glad you have a wide selection of medication now - really hope you get some fast relief.

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 15:23

"scoop and pack"

What the HELL is that? Are there little special pus scoopers you can buy? Is that actually part of someone's job, scooping pus?! That's amazing!
I used to work with a girl who put maggots on diabetic related wounds. Apparently that really really hurts but she seemed to enjoy the work. We called her Lynne-the-maggot-nurse. Glamourous.

DrKoothrappali · 16/08/2011 15:34

Just seen your photos, crikey that looks bad. Hope you get an impressive explosion soon and the meds help.

GlaikitFizzog · 16/08/2011 15:36

For those of you looking for an explosion, can I direct you

If you are of a delicate disposition, or about to eat, then it comes with a warning.

maxybrown · 16/08/2011 16:28

heck I love a good spot but even I am wincing - hope you are ok Your story has made me laugh though - I mean in the way you have been telling it Grin
