to make a little sign for this woman?

I have ranted on a previous occasion about the morning rat-run through our village so very quick summary:

Single track roads - short-cut to city - I am apparently only person who needs to go opposite direction during rush-hour - majority of people coming the other way clearly think I am unreasonable for driving through my own village and glare and head-shake at me - I am cross.

Obviously it is the holidays now, so the school run traffic is missing which makes life much easier. However, there is one woman who I see every single time. She drives very fast on a narrow, twisty road with several blind bends so I finish up crawling around corners in case she comes hurtling the other way. She flatly refuses to back up even a couple of feet to the nearest passing space, and she makes no attempt to move over so that both cars can pass without scraping through the hedge. So I finish up reversing to the next passing space with her driving about 6 inches off my front bumper with a face like thunder, and then as soon as the road widens at all, she squeezes past, glaring at me all the time and shaking her head.

Bearing in mind the following:

  1. I live here and have as much right to leave the village as she does to cut through it.

  2. I drive a very small car which causes minimal obstruction.

  3. I don't drive dangerously fast.

  4. I am the one reversing and getting off the road.

would I be unreasonable to make a little sign saying "The next time you shake your head at me will be the last time I reverse for you. I can sit here all day - how about you?"

Would probably be unreasonable to add "cowbag" at the end, I suppose.

HopeEternal · 27/04/2011 19:20

This thread must move to Classics at the appropriate time.

whathow · 28/04/2011 00:30

Oh how I wish we could all come out and drive behind you. She probably can't reverse some people are no good at it. You should drive up to a passing place that is on her side just near/far enough so that she definately has to reverse and wait her arrival! If she doesn't/cannot reverse you should from now onwards reverse very very slowly and make a few bad judgements so that you have to move forward again to get out of the hedge and start your position again. Oh how I wish we could all join you. Grin

bridgetjonesislovely · 28/04/2011 07:23

It's gloves off day..... Go panda we are all with you in MN cyber space

TandB · 28/04/2011 07:44

Whathow - so tempting!

I am leaving five minutes late to maximise cow bag commuting time exposure.

so glad this thread has popped back up, was reading it last week. can't wait to see how things go today! good luck kungfupanda!

TandB · 28/04/2011 08:39

I'm back! I have both good and bad news.

The good news is.......Cowbag had to reverse!

The bad news is......I can't take much credit for it.

I met her in the perfect place - a wide side entrance just behind her and a blind bend and hill behind me. Morally, it was the perfect set-up for her to have to give in. Unfortunately she was at the front of a little convoy of four cars, all driving too close so they would all have had to reverse.

So while I sat there thinking 'Do I really have the balls to make four cars back up?" I heard a rumbling noise from behind me and, like the cavalry, the local farmer comes rolling round the bend in his tractor!

At this point I looked at her and let a massive smile spread across my face as all four cars backed up, not only to the side entrance, but right back down the road to a wide bit.

I was gracious - I smiled and waved regally, and inclined my head in thanks.

So a victory of sorts - but not entirely down to me.

He might have been one of us...

ChristinedePizan · 28/04/2011 08:43

This is going to go on for weeks isn't it? :o I'm enjoying it very much- it's like a Penny Dreadful (but less gory). I like the thought of you grinning and waving regally.

NinkyNonker · 28/04/2011 08:43

Hurrah for the MN-ing farmer!

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 28/04/2011 08:49

Brilliant!!! It was actually perfect... she had now demonstrated her ability to reverse Wink and now you can just sit and smile at her when it's logical for her to reverse [cgrin]. Here's to next weeks installment!! Brew

Pagwatch · 28/04/2011 08:51

Jolly good.
Take the credit. The farmer was called to arms by your 'don't fuck with me' vibe.

Well done Grin

TandB · 28/04/2011 08:52

Ooh, do you think the farmer's wife might actually be a MNetter? I am now imagining her dragging him out of the house yelling "Go! Go! Brave defender of the downtrodden reversers"

It was a bit like the moment in a film when all is lost and the cavalry comes riding over the hill. Maybe the bit in Lord of the Rings when they hear the horn and all the riders of Rohan appear along the crest of the hill. I should have got out of the car and run up and down the road yelling "Ride now! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!" or whatever it was that accompanied all the spear shaking.

TheSkiingGardener · 28/04/2011 08:55

So unfortunately that makes it your turn to reverse next time, unless you can find the tractor again!
