Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

So, so pleased you're supporting this. It is so important!

silkknickers · 23/01/2014 18:31

Yay!!! Really pleased to see that you are behind this!

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 23/01/2014 19:35

Yes. Unequivocally yes. I've already signed it too.

Why wouldn't you?!

ashesgirl · 23/01/2014 19:36

Really pleased you're going to support it!! Well done MNHQ!

PortofinoRevisited · 23/01/2014 19:39

Well done indeed MNHQ!

HermioneWeasley · 23/01/2014 19:41

Oops, late to this but please MNHQ are supporting the campaign.

Also well done to the Co-op who stopped stocking lads' mags last year.

gritts1 · 23/01/2014 20:47

So pleased, well done Mumsnet. Can you please keep an eye on those child related companies who choose to partner with the Sun and then advertise on children's tv? Lego did but then stopped but Legoland Windsor etc have no issue attracting kids to Mr Dinsmore alleged child friendly newspaper.

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 23/01/2014 21:20

Also late to this..but very pleased!

Hey everyone, just popping on to post various links which will hopefully prove useful:

Here's our page on backing the campaign (it's currently at the top of our homage) with Justine's quote:
'The implication of Page 3 is pretty clear: men make the news, and women stand next to the news in their pants. This isn't what Mumsnet users want for their daughters - or their sons.'
Here's the No More Page 3 site and the petition (realise these have been posted upthread, but thought it might be useful to gather everything in one place).

We've also tweeted about our support, and posted on Facebook - please do RT and/or like/share to spread the word!

Hopefully there'll be more to come in days to come - meantime, do shout if you think of anything more we ought to be doing to support the campaign Smile

IndigoWoman2 · 23/01/2014 21:43

This has made my day! Mumsnet commands respect - people will take notice. This public seal of approval has given me more confidence to talk to workmates and acquaintances about signing the petition. And they are listening.

newgirl · 23/01/2014 21:51

thanks for the link to the petition - I've now signed. Took seconds.

Me30 · 23/01/2014 22:32

Get the NCT on board... So many networks, and very pro breast feeding. What about the support of breast feeding associations, changing the social expectations of women and their breasts is key to them... Thank you

Valdeeves · 23/01/2014 22:58

I agree with the FGM comment - that is the campaign Mumsnet should be doing.

Huitre · 23/01/2014 23:09

Mumsnet aren't 'doing' this particular campaign. They're just saying they agree with its aims and ethos. Not liking page 3 doesn't mean you don't get to loathe FGM as well. There isn't a limit to the number of dreadful sexist unpleasant things that Mumsnet can speak out against, or indeed that any of us can speak out against. I agree, it would be an excellent campaign for MN to be involved in. Why not suggest it to them (in addition to the page 3 thing)?

Creeping · 23/01/2014 23:13

Yay Mumsnet! So proud of you! Try to get loads of publicity for this please! Page 3 is so very wrong but so many people still don't see the problem, it simply needs explaining again and again.

It has become normalised and I'm sure many people/Sun readers don't object to it because they think doing so will paint them in a negative light (prude, spoilsport, anti-free speech, jealous..). But when more and more people openly challenge it the more THAT will become the norm, and those who backed it for the wrong reasons will change their minds. Eventually the Sun will realise it is better off ditching it and the seeds for an attitude change of how women are presented in the media will have been planted.

Good stuff!

RiaOverTheRainbow · 23/01/2014 23:53

Great news Grin

madwomanintheatt1c · 24/01/2014 00:13

Fantastic news.

As someone over 40 and pro- bf, I'm glad you weren't swayed by starballbunny. I have the right to have my own voice, and I don't need to have her mansplaining (!) the subject to me. She is entitled to her own opinion, but to dismiss those over 40 and under 20 as unable to comprehend the argument is insulting in the extreme.

Starballbunny · 24/01/2014 01:54

I don't dismiss every one over 40 and under 29, but I do thing that explains the ban page 3 campaign to an awful lot of those age groups who are not Guardian reading, Graduates is fraught with difficulty and that after you have explained a vast percentage of them will smile, nod and still think your bonkers!

Starballbunny · 24/01/2014 02:03

Also I wish that banning pg3. Would plant seeds if change in the way women are presented in the media, but it won't.

Pg.3 because the women is narked is unique, it's an anomaly and that's why it's become such a cause celeb. And it's why it's a pointless distraction.

The Sun dropping pg.3 will do nothing to stop the daily mail and other mass market magazines showing endless bikini shots of female celebs and discussing their weight or how old they look.

It will do nothing to stop female pop stars gyrating like lap dancers or scantily clad or stereotypic women being used in advertising.

madwomanintheatt1c · 24/01/2014 02:04

guardian reading and graduating have little to do with being over 40. If it's a class thing you are meaning, just say it out loud.

Starballbunny · 24/01/2014 02:08

In short it will do absolutely nothing to improve the world my DDs are growing up in!

Starballbunny · 24/01/2014 02:13

Class perhaps, education perhaps, but mostly I think a much more practical getting on with the job view of life.

madwomanintheatt1c · 24/01/2014 02:14

Neither will 30 dudes sitting in a Russian jail for three months, but they opted to protest to raise awareness of oil companies exploiting the arctic.

I think I'd rather be someone that stood up for my beliefs, rather than mithering about nothing changing anyway so why bother. But each to their own. It's hard to envisage a changed world, but not impossible.

I think it was Margaret mead that said 'never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.'

Best wishes to your dd's - may they grow up without being viewed as sex objects primarily, and human beings second.

msrisotto · 24/01/2014 07:44

Also I wish that banning pg3. Would plant seeds if change in the way women are presented in the media, but it won't.

You don't know that. Do you spend any amount of time lobbying against other campaigns?

NigellaLawless · 24/01/2014 08:02

Yes, I would love Mumsnet to support this campaign!
