Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

SO what you need to do fenella is also campaign against Robin Thicke.

Not actively argue with a campaign trying to help women.

You are currently wasting time trying to argue against something you see a as waste of time?. Why bother? Unless you enjoy page 3 and actually want it to stay?

Ilovexmastime · 24/01/2014 21:26

I think that MN should support this. I have signed the petition and also banned my DH from bringing the Sun into our house because I don't want my two DSs to see it. (He's started buying the Mirror instead - just in case anyone from the Sun is reading this!)

morethanpotatoprints · 24/01/2014 21:26

I enjoy M.net but it won't be for me if you join up to this.
I daresay anybody else who opposes a decision to back this will leave too.
Perhaps we can start our own online group.

There are so many photos of women's breast out there. I mean honestly, you trip and fall on a boob these days. Why does it also have to be in a newspaper? Does the male urge to stare at breasts really mean they have to have it available in all media forms?

CrockedPot · 24/01/2014 21:27

Yes, please do back it.

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 24/01/2014 21:28

Moldies for page 3 lovers?

You can call it boobies I guess.

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 24/01/2014 21:29

Ilovexmastime dh is also banned from bringing it in to the house, he complains he is missing the footy reports.. Is that what your dh reads the mirror for? We need an alternative

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 24/01/2014 21:29

Fenella, I will sign your petition against Robin Thicke too!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 24/01/2014 21:30

They've already said they're going to, if you read down the thread a bit.

Bye, MoreThanPotatoPrints Smile

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 24/01/2014 21:35

As will I!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 24/01/2014 21:37

Can MTV et al show any music video at any time,?

fenellaf · 24/01/2014 21:37

I wouldn't say that I enjoy page 3, I just think that with dicks like Robin Thicke, the amount of porn readily available on the internet, (which CAN get through, despite having filters) and social media sites where you are able to post a lot more than a pair of tits, that there are more important issues
Blimey, there'll be a petition for a ban on Heat's Torso of the Week soon.

fenellaf · 24/01/2014 21:40

Yes, they can, although the topless version of 'Blurred Lines' can only be shown after 11pm. I recall something on the news a few weeks ago that videos are going to come with ratings, much like films, but I think that anyone can still watch it. The ratings just advise who it is, and isn't suitable for.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 24/01/2014 21:42

I would sign a petition for MTV et al to have a watershed for all videos like that...

BIWI · 24/01/2014 21:43

Mind you if this means that lots of our hard of thinking posters leave us over this issue, then that's a result Smile

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 24/01/2014 21:45

thats the point, you have boobs everywhere..and no one is banning them. Let boob lovers have their boobs.

But why should it be in a newspaper? What are they getting across to young girls? Heat magazine is an enternatiment mag geared toward probably mostly heterosexual women. SO it makes sennse in context.

But who are the breast for in page 3? Do they think women don't read the news? Do they it doesn't matter that their female readership are being objectified? Because it's a "newspaper" it can go places this sort of thing should't go.

Under dad's arm to pick up the kids from school
in to the work canteen

It's "acceptable". It's legitimized in a way bringing an FHM wouldn't be, It's Ok for a teacher to leave it on his desk even if it makes young girls in his class feel uncomfortable.

BIWI · 24/01/2014 21:47

What I feel most sad, irritated and frustrated by is the fact that many of us women have to explain why this is a problem to other women

It's like we've gone back a couple of centuries

morethanpotatoprints · 24/01/2014 21:48

I think there are far more important issues tbh.
after having 2 dc have a fumble through the paper as young teens and a call from the school, because ALL young teens will look, mummy Grin the whole of the boys in y6 at the time had copies.

I am so glad this was available and not the outrageous porn on the internet that your children and husbands will be watching, if page 3 is banned. You really need to think it through.

southeastastra · 24/01/2014 21:49

yes back it, until they bring back the page 7 fella

BIWI · 24/01/2014 21:49

I think you need to understand the meaning of 'think it through'

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 24/01/2014 21:51

More than, so your argument is that, if p3 is banged, more people will access internet porn?

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 24/01/2014 21:51

Oh yes, children will suddenly just start watching hardcore porn because they can't get "innocent" tits in the page 3.

So why have the majority of children already been exposed to hardcore pornography? Why havnt they just been reading page 3? Maybe if we start telling young boys that objectifying women isn't cute... we can work on the harder stuff?

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 24/01/2014 21:51

Banged = banned

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 24/01/2014 21:53
