Got a mo to help disabled children and their families get the short breaks they need?

With luck you'll all know about our ongoing Respite Care campaign to make sure that disabled children and their families get the short breaks they need. If you don't, you can get up to speed here.

Short breaks are a really important service for disabled children and their families - a break from caring responsibilities for the parents, and a chance to do things with friends, and try new activities for their child.

Government funding was increased in 2011/12 - but the 'ring-fence' was removed. This means that local authorities can spend the money on other services if they wish.

BUT local authorities were required to publish a "short break service statement". This will help families to access short breaks - and make it easier to see if authorities aren't actually providing sufficient services (very important for campaigning purposes!)

So, our friends at Every Disabled Child Matters are asking MNers to make sure that their own local authority publishes this statement. It's really easy to do and will only take a minute, but it could make a big difference. So if you've got a mo, please do help them out.

My council's shortbreak service seems to be great and is published on their website. Just need to get DS a DX so we can access everything. Done BTW :)

My local authority hasn't published theirs yet. Say they will by end Oct.

I like these campaigns very much and think they're very valuable. I would rather do the emailing outside mn though and will do that, so I hope it still carries value if not part of the mn campaign.

These are excellent and very worthwhile campaigns.

Happy to do this, but would like to see the text of the letter they are sending on my behalf. I couldn't find it on the website - am I just being thick?

piprabbit · 24/10/2011 20:47

Belfast - when I did it, the text of the letter appeared in a box (all customised with my name and everything) before I finally submitted it. Probably not helpful, sorry.

Good campaign but Scotland not included?
