Got a mo to help disabled children and their families get the short breaks they need?

With luck you'll all know about our ongoing Respite Care campaign to make sure that disabled children and their families get the short breaks they need. If you don't, you can get up to speed here.

Short breaks are a really important service for disabled children and their families - a break from caring responsibilities for the parents, and a chance to do things with friends, and try new activities for their child.

Government funding was increased in 2011/12 - but the 'ring-fence' was removed. This means that local authorities can spend the money on other services if they wish.

BUT local authorities were required to publish a "short break service statement". This will help families to access short breaks - and make it easier to see if authorities aren't actually providing sufficient services (very important for campaigning purposes!)

So, our friends at Every Disabled Child Matters are asking MNers to make sure that their own local authority publishes this statement. It's really easy to do and will only take a minute, but it could make a big difference. So if you've got a mo, please do help them out.

Just English councils so I can't, but I'd be happy to addmy name to a Scottish one.

I have just got a reply from my council which I have forwarded to EDCM. It's
a long letter and 7 attachments (which I haven't had a chance to look through yet) plus link to the council's website.

am in scotland, sorry. just wanted to add a note of support though, as i know these services are vital to help parents. if anyone knows of a similar scheme to help scottish parents, pls advise!

Done. Wanted to send a link to the page to friends, but the site is (sadly) really rubbish. Page is broken in IE9 and I can't find the right page to link to. Looked up their Facebook page, but there's nothing on it really... A pity it's not better presented as it would be easier to spread the word.

Done.
My family truly benefitted (sp) from these experiences when I was a child.
My brother had spina bifida and died aged 22.
My mum has passed away 3 years ago but I remember how we, as a family, were very grateful and enjoyed the breaks.
Thank you. x
