My Gp's therory on twins

second pregnancy here..

Just seen the Dr and questioned him about my chances of it being twins.
My mum is a non identical twin. Im currently 8 weeks and im massive! Everyone knows /guessed and is amazed at my size and have commented on twins.

Anyway Dr's theory was that Multiple mums are usually pretty bad with sickness and breast tenderness as they have double the hormones.

Just wondered if your experience backs up his theory or not?

His theory is reasonably accurate from my experience.

But a woman can still be sick as a dog with a singleton due to her hormone levels (hcg) whilst a twin pregnancy mum might feel slightly queasy depends on the woman.

I'd go by size as an indicator just as much, bet you can't wait for that first scan.

My experience would back that up. From 6 weeks I was very very nauseous and sick, exhausted and could not do up my usual trousers/jeans.

Supposedly twins (especially non identical ones) are not heriditary so technically your mum being a twin should have no bearing but non id twins have come out in each of the last 5 generations of my family

Non are id twins are heriditary through the maternal line as they are based on the propensity to release multiple eggs at ovulation. This trait is sometimes inherited from mother to daughter. Non id are totally random.

Bear in mind that with second pregnancies it is often a shock just how quickly you expand. I was in maternity stuff at 8 weeks with DS2 but he was still a singleton.

TheProvincialLady- Yeah i expected to get bigger quicker second time but not quite this big! Ive been in maternity trousers since 5.5 weeks! Theres a pic on my profile of me at 5.5 weeks.

Its most likely not twins but I suppose till that first scan it will always be in the back of my mind.

Yes non id twins can be hereditary on the maternal side

I was pregnant with twins (for 11 weeks) and didn't look much bigger. Never been big in pregnancy. I did 'know' I was having twins though before.

I was much more sick with the twins than I have been during this pregnancy (singleton this time!). Though I do know a few twin Mummies who weren't sick at all (grrrr!) so it really does depend on you.

Will be interesting to find out!!

gosh, you are big for dates! I'd go with triplets or quads on the basis of that! Lol. If your mum is a non ID twin and you are rather larger than you should be for dates I'd confidently say that chances are it is twins! Congrats! lol I shall wait to see if you return with news! Your dd is GORGEOUS!

Non ID are def hereditary on mum's side, ID twins not at all (HOW many times have I had to explain that one, he he he??!!).

I had ID twins, but had so few symptoms that I was convinced that the pregnancy test was lying to me and the 12 weeks scan would show a blank screen... Imagine my surprise (and the midwife's that I had no symptoms)?!?...

So you might well find that you are having twins - and dif so CONGRATS in advance. It's brilliant fun...

I did get pretty big quickly but didn't suffere excessively from sickness, although I've nothing to compare it to - just the one pg (I learned my lesson!)

Can I give you a bit of advice? Go to an insurance broker NOW and take out insurance against having twins. Do it before the scan. When I was pg I was quoted £9 & it would've paid out about £2k. Oh boy, did I wish I'd done it, but I was in denial - it would not be twins so a waste of £9. Would've helped with the two sets of bouncers, carseats, nappies etc...

I felt awful in the first few weeks, and then the sonographer at my 12 week scan said nonchalantly "no wonder you've been feeling so bad - you've got two in there" so I guess she'd go along with your GP's view.

OMG I remember the 'all day' sickness for the entire 38 weeks my mouth used to taste like a sand dancers flip flop and my face looked exactly like that!!

i ended up in hospital with hyperemeis gravidium with my 3rd pregnancy. they wanted to do a scan to see if it was a multiple pregnancy, but i;d had a scan 2 days before and there was only one in there.

His theory isn't correct. I know lots of twin mums who didn't have much sickness at all.

I'm not jealous. Really! I'm not.

If you can't wait til 12 weeks to find out you could always get a private early scan ...

Had one day of sickness-doc put it down to a tummy bug.

But I was so tired...

Had boy/girl twins by the way.

Not a minute of sickness for either twin pregnancy here

Was big earlier though..and had a feeling that something was 'wrong'..but it was not..it was twins!!

It's very hard to tell if it's going to be twins...a lot of women think that at first. I did not however as there is no history of twins in our family..and i had 2 sets of them!

But as you definately do have twins in the family..i'd say there is a strong chance!!
