Just found out 3 babies in there.... in shock

Hi - I've just got back from an 8 week scan, to discover that there are 3 babies! One baby looked correct size and a clear heartbeat, but the other two were smaller and couldn't see heartbeats. This may be because they are further away and the internal scan couldn't get a good view. We have an appointment with the specialist on Thursday morning to get it confirmed, and see if any / all of the babies are viable.

We also have a DD who is nearly 2 years old. Blimey, life could be different than we'd envisaged....

Sorry, I'm not sure what advice I'm after, just in shock really. Anyone else got triplets and a 2 year old and find it the best thing in the world?!?!

Goodness! Well congratulations! I hope that Thursday's appointment goes well.

Perhaps you'll need to start planning some help!

mummyplonk · 22/09/2009 14:03

oh wow, a huge treble congratulations do you think you will want to know the sex of the babies?

Thank you all for your messages. My goodness this doesn't feel real!

Yes I would love to know the gender, but suddenly that doesn't seem so important, which is bonkers because until this morning I was so keen to have another girl. Now I'd just hope that the odds would allow at least one to be a girl!

We live abroad at the moment, so yes I suppose we'd need to seriously think about our future plans. Blimey.

Shock is precisely what these scans do!!!!! Congratulations! Us mums of multiples have a daily chat thread where we share the good, the bad and the ugly, if you need us, you will find us....the thread always begins "D'y ever wonder......." you'll be welcome.

Wow!! If all goes well on Thursday and triplets are confirmed, I'd recommend reading 'Extreme Motherhood' by Jackie Clune - she had triplets and an under two-year-old and its her story of how it went. I had twins when my other son was 20 months old and survived - its a bit like a rollercoaster where your highs are higher but your lows are, well, as frumpy says, pop over and join us on 'D'y ever wonder' to find out!

CakeBuddy · 23/09/2009 17:02

Wow estar, twins and a 20 month old - that's amazing. I'm sure the three children must be great friends!

Thank you ladies for your kind messages. I'm so excited about the appointment tomorrow and can't wait to see my babies properly, but terrified at the same time that all 3 might not be okay (at Tuesdays scan we could only see the first baby clearly). It's amazing how quickly they've become real little people in my life. But what will be will be....

I'll let you know how I get on and will surely drop by for some much needed advice and support!

Thank you all - had the appointment this morning and everything is amazing. 3 babies, 3 heart beats and 3 placenta. Can't say for sure but they think there must have been 3 eggs fertilized by 3 different sperm. Would love to know the chances of that one!

Didn't get much sleep last night for worrying about the appointment, so off for a kip now while DD1 has a nap too. If only we could 'bank' sleep I think I'm going to need it!!

Wahey - congratulations!! Hope your pregnancy progresses well and that you manage to take care of yourself with the extra pressure.

(And yes, my three get on really well together - when I watch them all playing it makes whatever difficult stages there were in the beginning all worth it )

NotQuiteSoBigBird · 25/09/2009 08:42

Congratulations - I'm rather horrified to discover I'm an eensy bit jealous, shows how much I'm in love with my DD and DTs at the moment . Best of luck with the pregnancy, you can start eating for 4 now (blimey!).

Congratulations - what lovely news!!

CakeBuddy · 29/09/2009 17:41

Hi everyone - thank you for your messages! I suppose the news is beginning to sink in now, and I've got a million questions whizzing through my head. If you've got triplets, can you please help me? My next docs appt isn't until next week.

How many weeks did you carry your triplets for / when were they born? Were all your babies okay and born healthy? Did you have a c-section? What about bed rest before the birth? And breastfeeding - should I investigate cloning my breasts in a bid to grow a third boobie, or did you manage to rotate the feeding schedule to satisfy all three?!

Sorry, I know it probably all sounds like a bit of a muddle and sorry if i've worded anything insensitively to anyone's situation - but i've done a bit of reading (big mistake!) and my head is full of the risks and pitfalls. Any advice or reassurance would be gratefully received!

Congratulations!

Re. breastfeeding. My dsis breastfed twins for a year (exclusively for 6 months).

I have a friend who breastfed/EBM her triplets for about 2 years. As far as I know, she breastfed 2 directly, and bottlefed the third with EBM. No idea why this particular arrangement - possibly to do with the time they spent in SCBU?

Marslady may be able to help - I know that she breastfed twins very successfully and is now a Doula.
