welcome cricket. Don't go there with the toilet duck - that is for parents of twins over the age of 3 only (too scary - much better to be in blissful ignorance ).

This thread is in about it's 4th incarnation - we on here talk a lot (or some people (not me - I can never keep up )). If you want to run the full gamut of life with twins go back and wade through the previous threads (you will laugh, cry, fall alseep with the mundainity of it all).

Very belated birthday wishes for the mini-marses.

Kelly1978 · 14/02/2007 12:56

I wish mine would hold hands.
We went shopping this morning and dt1 is covered in bite marks and scratches from dt2. Someone needs to invent tandem trolley seats for dts.

Harrogatemum · 14/02/2007 14:07

welcome cricket!! And helllooooo everyone else.

Big smooches for Valentines Day to all of you. DH bought me some choccies which he gave to DT2 to give to me, big mistake, he thinks they are his of course now and has been carrying them round saying "Alex chocolate" since then (he cant grasp how to say "my" so instead just uses his name all the time).

I am at home with the baby boiling some bones for stock for a "jus" for a duck dish for DH for V Day. ARent I good - do I get a medal or something for being Superwoman???

piximon · 14/02/2007 16:30

Absolutely no time to catch up. Just wanted to brag that DH and I made it out to the London Aquarium today for DS 4th birthday with all four in tow. Didn't loose tempers once and had a lovely if nervous time of it.
Chickened out of eating out tho. Having take away instead.

In fact it all went so well we may even all venture out again when it's not a special occassion.

Oh and Mars, thanks for the chat yesterday, can't believe that despite my phone phobia we chatted for nearly an hour. Felt much better afterwards!

frumpygrumpy · 14/02/2007 20:36

Hi lovely girls, I miss you, kisses to you all. DP is home and we are in the midst of foreign visitors and a garden invasion .......so not me . I can't chat and I miss you!!!

soon babes, soon.......this one without me maybe......but sooon..........

cricket - jumb aboard

dingdongjustforyoufg · 14/02/2007 21:20

evening ladies nice to see you haven't abandoned us FG!

HM I am VERY impressed by your supermum skills - I went to M&S on my way home from work v nice though

So, has everyone had a good valentines day?

Mycupoverrunswithlove · 14/02/2007 21:22

Yep, lovely food, red roses etc. But I reckon I shouldn't really be on here though

dingdongjustforyoufg · 14/02/2007 21:28

me neither, but PMT has taken over

rosmerrin · 14/02/2007 22:29

Valentines Day, what Valentines Day?

I did get my usual card from my Dad though!

Kelly - LOL re. biting. Mine went through a phase when DT1 would be biting DT2 whenever he was annoyed - DT2 would be literally covered in teeth/bite shaped bruises, all up his arms and on his back. It was very embarrassing when I took them swimming - even though the bruises were so small they had to be from a little mouth rather than from me mistreating him, you still feel a bit self conscious!! Unfortunately there was no cure or solution (unlike the hair pulling - solution: get out the clippers) and we just had to keep them separate until DT1 grew out of it. Ho hum.

jess1996 · 15/02/2007 08:03

Hi ladies,

I had a scan at at 7 and a half weeks and told I was having twins. Since then I've read lots of things about twin pregnancies causing worse symptoms and rapid weight gain in the 1st trimester. I've had only 3 weeks of moderate nausea (which has mostly cleared up) and at 11 and a half weeks I've not really gained much weight at all. I'm getting increasingly worried and I'm not due another scan for 3-4 weeks. Just wondered what everyone elses experience of twin pregnancies was?

Thanks.

throckenholt · 15/02/2007 08:20

Hi Jess - welcome to the world of twins. The rule is there is no rule - it is different for everyone. I had horrible sickness but only for a few weeks, and was not particularly big in the early months.

However, I would go back and ask for another scan and get them to decide if they are id or not - and if id make sure they plan to scan fortnightly. ID have the potential to develop problems with the shared blood supply whhich needs careful monitoring. Not all get a problem (mine didn't) - but they do need to be looking for it and be prepared to refer to specialists if needed. Another reason for a scan soon is to have a nuchal fold test. They can't do blood tests for downs with twins - so your only option is the nuchal fold scan which has to be done before 13 weeks I think.

Come back here if you don't understand any of their answers, and just for general support.

dingdongjustforyoufg · 15/02/2007 08:25

Welcome Jess, don't worry too much - everyone is different, I had no sickness and little weight gain at first (made up for it later though ) I think we have all had different experiences and IMO the literature on the subject often paints a worst case scenario that fills you with dread! Good luck

Mycupoverrunswithlove · 15/02/2007 09:29

Hi Jess, welcome. I also didn't get much more nausea than I had experienced in my singleton pregnancy. I didn't put on extra weight in the first trimester either. In fact I remained small throughout the pregnancy prompting lots of comments along the lines of "I can't believe you are expecting twins"
We are all different I guess.

Kelly, you know I know where you are coming from on the biting front, it is still a problem in this househould, but has improved a bit in recent months, you will be pleased to hear

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2007 09:38

Hi jess,
I didn't get big until past the first trimister when I started growing very quickly. I was a lot sicker with the dts but like the others have said, everyone is dfferent, so try not to worry. Congratulations!

May I present my application for supermum?

For Valentines dinner I made crispy battered green beans and king prawns, chicken mariated in JD BBQ sauce for starter. For main course we had sizzling garlic and spices chicken with peppers, onions and cheesey mash. For dessert was a big heart shaped mascerpone cheesecake with roasted cashew crust and mango and pomegranate fruit caramel sauce. I was in the kitchen for HOURS!
(The first two courses were copycat TGI recipes ) I even bought myself a new negligee to make myself look presentable, but fell asleep by 10, cos I was knackered from cooking.

Harrogatemum · 15/02/2007 10:45

Right Kelly thats it! Its WAR!!!

Valentines Day dinner was French onion soup with gruyere toasts, duck breast with a red wine jus, potatoes dauphinoise and mange tout, then chocolate puddings......

We didnt make it to the cheeseboard as my red underwear, hold ups and knee high boots did the trick.....sorry if TMI!!!!!!!!

Anyhow, now that my hot flush is over, welcome Jess and dont worry, at 17 weeks an acquaintance said to me "are you sure you're having twins?" as she was bigger than me and was only about 15 weeks with one. Are you tall? I am 5 foot 11 and so have a long body and therefore lots more space to grow upwards before growing outwards if you see what I mean!!

FG - you HAVE to come to the meet up - this time next year I may be on the other side of the world and you will have missed your chance to meet the great HM (bigging myself up a bit there!).

Anyone else around today??

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2007 10:51

wow I think you win hm!

Harrogatemum · 15/02/2007 11:09

Kelly, I must confess......the choc puddings were M and S. And could therefore in no way compete with your incredible cheesecake.

Please - take the chef's hat from me, I cheated!!!!!

cricket · 15/02/2007 11:13

Hi Jess
Am currently preg with twins and can say that I didn't get any sickness and also didn't get big until about 26 weeks onwards when I expanded daily. Everyone is different and the books just scare you - I was imagining that I wouldn't be able to do much at all from about 32 weeks onwards but have managed to move house and do lots of silly diy. Am not superwoman, just a bit daft. (am also quite tall 5ft 11 so that helps with bump a bit).

Had hilarious Valentines night without hubby. Two friends of mine were taking me out for pre-babies slap-up meal and we chose the date ages ago without realising it was Valentines. One of my friends was unable to turn up in the end, so there was just the two of us getting stared at by all these grey haired couples at the local golf club. Hilarious - especially when the management bought us red roses each! What a scandal to behold eh, esp with me so heavily preg!!

cricket · 15/02/2007 11:20

Quite shocked by all this culinary excellence that has been taking place too....most worrying when all I can manage is to dial a takeaway!

Harrogatemum · 15/02/2007 11:47

cricket - the whole culinary thing is my way of relaxing, plus the more time I spend in the kitchen, the more time DH spends with the DTs!!

How much longer have you got to go now? Are you going to be having the babes naturally or have they booked you in for a C section? Everyones experiences are different of course - I had mine naturally and it was fine but they were both primed with their heads down so it was an easy decision.

Whereabouts in the UK are you?

Leoladyofleisure · 15/02/2007 12:58

Wow Kelly and HM, I wish you had come to my house for valentines!!!!! Just leaving the food however and taking your beautiful bodies and sexy underwear ( of the heavily pregnant) elsewhere!

Cricket, it seems that once you have twins (or more) and they are about a year old you turn into super-cook! All the mums here seem to be fantastic cooks. Maybe its something to do with surviving the pregnancy and the first year means you can do everything fantastically well afterwards!

Kelly, at least your dts have each other to bite and aren't biting other children instead. I have been very, very upset more than once to see the bite marks ds has left on other children at the nursery. He seems to be over it now though and is the one that comes home covered in bites and scratches from other children.

Welcome Jess and congratulations on the pregnancy ! I also panicked at the advice to put on loads of weight in the first tri, I actually lost 3Kg. I think the books say you should put on 18Kg by 20 weeks ! I am now 36+ weeks and have gained about 12Kg. The babies are growing perfectly well and I am very healthy. People also tell me that my belly doesn't look huge, but they should try carrying it around for a while !
My advice, take good care of yourself, eat well and often, rest, rest, rest when you are tired and realise a twin pregnancy IS tougher than a singleton pregnancy. If you have other children make sure you organise help with them, you will need to rest. And finally, make sure the hospital you are going to has experience with twin pregnancies and birth so they know what potential problems can arise and the care that this special pregnancy needs.

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2007 13:10

I lvoe leo's theory but have to agree with hm's point. Being in the kitchen is relaxing and means more time away from dts! I've chucked all mine outside in the garden but I'm totally guilt free because I'm being a good mummy restocking the fridge and freezer. We have vegetable soup, quiche with aubergine, corgette, peppers, mushrooms, etc, shepherd's Pie, cheese and potato pasties, and maybe some mince pies if I get round to it. (mincemeat is reduced to 15p a jar in sains!!) But then this weekend I will be leaving them all to it and visiting a twin mum up in Nottingham!

MarsLady · 15/02/2007 14:40

You lot make me laugh!

Hi Jess. Congratulations!

Now there will be no more talk of caesarean births for twins please. Nice vaginal deliveries that are quicker to recover from.

FG!!!! You can run but you cannae hide. The meet up is planned for the summer and it's at YOURS! So, in the words of my niece... suck it up, build a bridge and get over it!

rosmerrin · 15/02/2007 18:15

Hi Jess and welcome - I lost 1 stone in my first trimester due to constant throwing up. At the worst at about 8 weeks I was throwing up every 10 mins (literally) and couldnt even keep down a sip of water - after three solid days of that I ended up in hospital on a drip, which is when I had my first scan and found out I was having twins and hence the copious vomiting. I threw up several times a day for the first 6-7 months - as soon as I stopped throwing up my hips went! Deep joy - however, despite the serious lack of nutrition my boys were 5 lbs 5 oz each and that was at 5 weeks early so dont worry about weight!! When I got pregnant again with my third little boy I threw up again for about 7 months, but this time only once or twice a day - so I think I may be particularly prone to it - I dont plan to try again to find out!!

Good luck - dont be frightened by the horror stories, especially mine! It was all worth it in the end. Any questions and the ladies on this thread are a mine of information and support. It takes a little time to get your head round the idea of twins when you first find out - I just cried my eyes out with fear! - but it can be done and it is a real blessing!!

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2007 18:58

Jess, dont read this!!

Aaaaaaaargh!
dt2 has realised taht a great game to play when he isn;t ready for bed is to keep jumping in dt1's cot with all his bedding and dt1 is screaming the house down. Dt1 is my sleepyhead who would have gone straight away if it wasn't for dt2. I feel so bad for him but what do I do?? I've been up 3 times to return dt2 to his own cot.
