Like some sort of film sequel, or a royal dynasty, welcome to Life with twins III, a thread for general discussions and sharing experiences of having (or expecting) twins.

Another vote for the Tommee Tippee cups here - we were given the Dr Browns but couldn't get on with them, and I wasn't keen on the sucky cups generally as wanted to get them used to drinking rather than sucking (if you see what I mean). The lids on the TTs are a bastard to get off though.

Oh, and all was well when DH came home from work yesterday, he had a bunch of flowers and M&S ready meals in hand...

Polka it is a relief finally resigning, isn't it. Work have been lovely about it, hoping they'll put some bits and pieces of at-home freelancing my way, as the financial reality of dropping my salary completely is giving me the shivers!

Cerubina · 10/01/2012 14:16

Tommy Tippee seem to work for us too after very unsuccessful try of Avent cups. They're very no frills and the lids are very hard to shift (flip the spout up when putting on/taking off!) but S&R really seem to have taken to them quite well. And there's no option of having a valve so they don't have that problem to get round.

Mumof1plustwins · 11/01/2012 11:42

Thanks girls, will try them then...

Speaking of OHs, mine just called to tell me he's skint... Well don't look at me! I'm feeding and clothing 3 growing kids! Hmm I do believe he thinks I have a secret stash of thousands somewhere...I wish!

PolkaDottedShoes · 11/01/2012 12:38

I am some what comforted to see it isn't just me that struggles with those beaker lids, really thought it was just be being dozy somehow.

Mumof1plustwins it's definately not cheap is it! I have the opposite problem in that my husband wouldn't even know we were skint unless I told him (although I have tried to drum into him how our new budget will work now we're down to one wage) Hmm I could be doing anything with our money and I genuinely don't think he would know... he will ask if we can afford something, has no idea when bills are due out- to be honest I wanted to be in charge originally as he is crap with organising money but sometimes I would like to be the one off in cloud cuckoo land!

Twins are napping and I should be doing something constructive but instead looking on the internet for holiday ideas for the summer- want to take the twins up to Scotland, or maybe cornwall... hmm. Have any of you been camping with 1 year old twins? Also looking at new tents, anything really to delay cleaning the kitchen Wink

Hello everyone I'm a new twin mum(3 week ID girls) we Have 3 dc already, 5, 8 and 1 so we have a mad house :)

Any tips or advice on how to settle both babies at night would be a god send, they take it in turns, you can guarantee that one will be settle fast asleep and one won't .. So no sleep on this house.

Also would be grey to talk to other twin mums :)

BB3 · 11/01/2012 16:11

Hi ladies

Wow I think I've finally caught up (but no way I can remember everything!)

Re beakers we have a nightmare with ds (2) as he like free flowing beakers so will chew the ones you suck until there's a hole big enough for it to flow through without him having to do any work (the down side being his drink is always all over my floor and sofa!). He's getting away with it at the moment as he is still very poorly and I'll let him have any form of food or fluid to just get something in him! Hospital has really freaked him and he is very cautious of anything food or drink you give him!

Girls are 16 weeks and weighing in at 12'4 and 12'12 - had their third jabs yesterday and are miserable as sin today! Joy!

Katy - I found mine just came with time - they gradually get better at it (although still far from hood!) How are the girls doing?

Sorry for the rubbish me post - will hopefully have seen the end of all the sickness and I can keep up! X

Mumof1plustwins · 11/01/2012 20:51

Hope your lil one is better soon BB3!

The boys kept waking last night so I was shattered this morning and was abit blocked b/fing wise which definitely did not help :(
Hoping they'll sleep better tonight but they've already started they're 'I want to suckle all night' business so we'll see!

Have no idea how I will wean them off the breast, I still plan to carry on till at least 12 months so still have a couple months left...wow the time has flown by, can't believe they're nearly 1!

Hope everyone else is ok?

And welcome xkatyx!

Mumof1plustwins · 13/01/2012 11:04

I'm using the mumsnet App, don't know why it's had such bad reviews, it's fine!

Anyway, boys won't eat their lunch today because they want my sandwich! I've tried showing them the piece they want and putting it on top of their spoon of mush but they've grown wise! Haha Sad

They're very nearly crawling, they really want to!

Oh no, now A doesn't want me to feed him, he wants to feed himself...must be tired I'll put him to sleep

Hope everyone else is fine!?

Chesticles · 13/01/2012 11:13

Hope everyone is doing ok, and that all the dreaded lurgy had passed. We fortunately seem have gone a couple of weeks without anything too bad illness wise

Another user of the tommee tippee cups here as well. Though we do have a variety of others that we use as cups mysteriously dissappear for hours on end in this house. The other good thing about the tommee tippee cups is they come in lots of colours (not just pink and blue). D drinks LOADS more than J who barely drinks anything, so I like to assign cup colours so I know how much J is drinking.

tartiflette · 13/01/2012 11:15

Tommee t here as well. I remember our HV advising not to bother with non-spill cups as they get used to the weird suction and you then have another battle trying to get them to drink out of a 'normal' beaker.

Chesticles · 13/01/2012 11:15

Oops posted too soon. Hi KforKitty and xkaty Hope you are enjoying life with twins.

PolkaDottedShoes · 13/01/2012 14:16

It is funny how advise differs- my Health Visitor suggested using non-spill whilst they are still little as long as you progress to a different beaker as they get older, whilst they are getting used to weaning and drinking independantly. I personally do like non-spill for now as fussy DS wouldn't drink any water at all before and would just bite the hard spout, but they are nearly 8 months now so probably won't use for much longer.

Hi kforkitty and xkaty Smile

PolkaDottedShoes · 13/01/2012 14:27

Ah you see Chesticles I'm one of those annoying mum of boy/girl twins who has everything blue or pink as I just would not remember what belonged to whom if not! Not too many pink clothes mind, but cups, dummy clips, sleeping bags, tooth brushes etc...Grin I would prefer purple to pink actually but never seems to be many purple things baby related. I have really struggled to find nice, bright unisex sleepsuits/vests as DD is still in some 3-6 month clothing and DS is now wearing mostly 9-12 so I can get quite abit more wear out of them

xkatyx · 13/01/2012 18:32

Hi everyone,

Everyone's twins seams a little older than mine and you all have survived so that's a good sign :)

I'm proberly starting off badly and giving them bad habit but I put twin to sleep in there bouncy chairs that lie flat but I sit them up slightly so they feel cushioned, it's the only way to gy a few hours sleep at night!! I'm going to regret it I'm sure.

I hope everyone's babies are feeling better .. My 1 year old is constantly poorly with something, I hate this time of year.

tartiflette · 13/01/2012 19:19

Polka I totally agree re. unisex stuff, mine are both girls but I was desperate not to go down the all pink route and it was quite a challenge. Have you tried Vertbaudet, they do some more unusual colours? Usually some purple knocking around.

BB3 · 13/01/2012 19:32

Oh Katy don't worry - I'm only 16 weeks in to twin motherhood and for me it's about just doing what you need to get through it all - plenty of time to break habits!

I'm sure two years ago there was loads of unisex stuff when I had ds and now I can't seem to escape the pink!!! Wink

AtLongLast · 13/01/2012 19:58

One of our Surestart ladies is a dental nurse & has a bit of a crusade in favour of free-flow cups because so much tooth decay is caused by children sucking juice over extended time periods from valved ones / those requiring sucking. Ours didn't really drink v much water at all til fairly recently - prob because they were still getting so much milk, in part because we did blw so they didn't eat big volumes til after they were 1.

I wouldn't worry about using the chairs Katy. I'm sure you know from your others how quickly things can change anyway. We've prob broken every `rule' in the book, esp on sleeping but both boys now sleep through & in their own cots. Only happened since they were 20months so not a strategy for everyone, but we're fine with it.

Have to say girl clothes shopping is so lovely. Not that I've bought anything yet really, but looking is fun! Not so keen on the masses of pink tho we are in a bit of a pink phase since we're using things people bought when she was born. Lots of red too - always good by me. Our Asda seem to have a fair bit in purple if you don't mind supermarket clothes.

PolkaDottedShoes · 13/01/2012 20:10

tartiflette thank you I will have a look! I have only searched there for specific items before, off to have a browse. I also buy very few pink clothes for DD, I much prefer her to wear purple, greens, red etc. Other people, on the other hand, buy her nothing but pink!

xkatyx I remember putting DS in his chair in the early hours at one time as he just would not sleep in his cot past 3 am and I was terrified of falling asleep holding him. It didn't last for long and we really worked to get him into a routine as DD had bad colic in at night and I thought it would help to get at least one of them settled! You do what you can to survive in the early days. I remember the first few weeks as one long blur to be honest- my twins are, and have always been, terrible for waking up an awful lot throughout the night (nearly 8 months now) and not much chance of it improving anytime soon. I am sure you are doing a great job- baby twins and 3 other children, I am in awe! Smile

Off topic, but have just watched the film 'Never let me go'. I read the book a while ago, but my god, I forgot just how utterly depressing it is. I would have been better off watching Eastenders!

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

LaVitaBellissima · 13/01/2012 20:43

In regards to clothes shopping, it is a good idea to buy sizes in advance in the sales. I like Next, Joules, Gap, Zara & H&M for clothes, it's also a good idea to write down what sizes they will be for Summer?Winter clothes, so when shopping if you see something you like you buy it for the right time of year iykwim. 3-6 months - june/July/August, 6-9 months August/Sept/Oct etc, makes it much quicker when shopping.
I've always hated TK Maxx as I don't have the patience to look, but for the childrens clothes it is only one rack to look through and I've found some amazing bargains and really good quality clothes/shoes in there.

Mumof1plustwins · 14/01/2012 09:39

Hi all, glad to hear everyone is well

Think my boys will learn how to drink from a cup faster to be honest, they don't get the suck on the beaker thing at all so just hold it instead. But they seem to know what to do if I hold a cup to their mouths...

Re clothing and colours I've assigned each twin a pattern and colour, G is stripes and A is spots and usually whoever is the loudest that week will wear the 'loudest' clothes Grin
And my FB (5yo) loves pink so buying for her isn't too hard at all Grin

Well better change another nappy...

Mumof1plustwins · 14/01/2012 09:42

Oh and I know they're not 'the best' but last time I looked Primark had a good sale on their baby clothes if anyone's running a tight budget (which I assume we all are having multiples on a singletons wage Wink )

BB3 · 15/01/2012 20:07

hello ladies

ALL I think supermarket clothes are brilliant (especially sainsbury's TU range) especially for the basics - I went to mothercare the other day as I thought I better get the girls some 3-6 month babygros and bawked at the idea of £16 for three! For both of them for one week I'd need at least 2-3 packs!

I love joules clothing but I'm saving it for when the kids are older and stay in clothes for a year rather than a month! Grin

I try and do sales but I can't stand the jumble sale chaos that comes with them Confused

I've probably missed a million posts as I started this one at 5 o'clock and I keep getting puked on by ds distracted! Blush

PolkaDottedShoes · 15/01/2012 20:29

I love buying clothes in the sales for my 2- I managed to get some lovely things for next summer (more for DD though, really struggle to find bits for DS in sales?!) I mostly do the supermarkets (Tu, F+F and George) Debenhams and Next for the twins, although some of my favourite things have been from Tesco in particular. I bought a fair few bits in the last Debenhams sale that only lasted a few days then went back to full price so was very pleased with that, I usually seem to miss these things!

AtLongLast · 15/01/2012 21:42

Ooh, I agree on sale shopping in advance (tho I feel a bit overwhelmed with choice forr dd so haven't bought anything!)! Very' have some fantastic sales at times & I've had loads from them - usually Woolies Ladybird' brand. I bought the boys red trousers in every size from newborn-18months for £2 a pair & ds2 wears them all the time. & they keep sending £30 off £60 shop type vouchers too. Worth keeping an eye out. I've had some stuff from Primark but find the sizing a bit odd, particularly for tops for the boys & they've never fitted for long. They've got loads more girl's stuff so will have another look. I've seen some lovely stuff in Pumpkin Patch on occasion but I'm getting fed up with their `70% reductions on everything across the whole store' email declarations...... only to find a zillion exclusions in reality. YY to any nice supermarket stuff. I've never looked at Joules before Lavita...... some great stuff there! Loving the welly socks. Something we def need since it's all ds1 will wear on his feet now.... Sounds like I need a closer eye on Debenhams too Polka .

I need new dungerees for the boys to keep nappies on bottoms. With ds1-proof buttons. They have 1 pair each at the mo but not for use outside the house since they're only 9-12 month so legs are 3/4 length. Boys were not impressed to be trussed up but it was lovely to have them nappied and clothed for a few hours!

Mumof1plustwins · 16/01/2012 12:35

Do you shop online or in store?

Baby A is becoming a difficult independent eater, hes just not very good at it but refuses me spoon feeding him Sad
Guess its time to stop mashing and start chopping finger sized amounts for them. Baby G isn't as bad but if I'm eating near them they won't eat, they just want my food and to feed themselves!
I wouldn't mind so much if they didn't bite off more than they could chew! Quite literally Wink

How are you feeding yours Foxtails?
