Evening showers

I've always showered in the morning , that has seemed very standard. For reference, I'm 60. But I've noticed that a lot of people seem to shower at night. This seems like a more recent thing to me but maybe it's always been common, and it's just that the Internet has allowed this to be more visible to me. What do people think?

I’ve always showered in the evening.

I don't know why this is in multi cultural families! Oops.

I’ve always showered in the evening.

But how old are you? I feel like it's more recent

I’m 50ish, and almost always do both. Logically, before showers people would have had baths, and they would have almost always have been in the evening as it takes rather a long time to have bath before work! So you would have thought that people would have changed to having a shower in the evening instead of a bath, as showers became more prevalent. And that showering in the morning was a later phenomenon

GraceyDoodles · 07/09/2024 22:52

I'm 30 and shower morning and evening, always have since being a teenager.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 07/09/2024 22:57

I shower in the morning. I get sweaty and smelly overnight so can't conceive of going to work or out without showering first!

zzpleb · 07/09/2024 22:58

Modern hot water heating systems have probably influenced time of day for bathing.

Electric showers (immediate hot water) or gas boilers with timers mean that hot water can be available first thing in the morning.

Before that technology, people had immersion heaters on the water tank, without a timer, that had to be switched on manually. Or a gas water boiler, also switched on manually. So you had to wait for the water to heat, and therefore it was easier to bathe in the evening.

i think there are probably a number of factors here.

for example my dds (young adults) pretty much always bathe or shower in the evening, they kind of carried on from night time baths when they were little. They are not early birds so this gives them more time in the morning.
in some households of only one bathroom there may be very limited time in the mornings and some people prefer a less rushed shower.
I generally shower in the morning. I reverse on holiday if it is hot, and have shower and hair wash early evening before dinner. (Might have quick body shower the following morning but only if sweaty)

I’m not sure that’s quite right is it? Every house I’ve ever lived in, since I was aware of such things, had a timer on the heating / hot water. As a child we always knew what time the heating came on. And we also knew how to override it…but don’t tell my father 🤣 And that was back in the ‘70s/80s

notacooldad · 07/09/2024 23:05

I do both, before bed and morning. If I've had a particularly sweaty day, maybe one when I come home at tea time and before I go out in the evening.

CuteCillian · 07/09/2024 23:05

I have an evening shower, DH has a morning one. We are the same age, I think it is down to individual preferences.

Puffykins · 07/09/2024 23:11

I have a bath at night and shower in the morning after the gym. I would hate to get into bed without having washed.

Strawberrypicnic · 07/09/2024 23:14

I'm mid 30s and have evening showers because I'm not a morning person and I find it easier to get up and go if I'm already clean (I brush my teeth again in the morning obvs). I think a lot of people probably time their showers according to whether they're morning or night people.

farfromideal · 07/09/2024 23:15

I'm 54. Growing up, we always had evening showers. My parents still do. I moved to morning ones during the years at university and the habit stayed.

If I've been out all day, I'll have two: morning and evening

icantwaitforsummer · 07/09/2024 23:19

Evening shower, I hate mornings.

lemongirl1985 · 07/09/2024 23:19

Question for those who don't shower in the evening: you put on your pyjamas without cleaning your feet and privates after a day spent in shoes and using the toilet multiple times? Genuine question, sorry.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/09/2024 23:22

I can’t imagine going to work or anywhere else without showering. I need it to wake up, if not to get clean. Often I have a quick shower at night or a bath.

I bath or shower in the evening and have done ever since I was a tiny child and my mum supervised it. I carried on doing it because it makes going to bed much nicer and don’t usually bother in the morning. I always thought that sophisticated people in the 80s (I was a teenager in the 80s) suddenly decided to shower in the morning, probably make their hair massive with a diffuser afterwards and drink a glass of uht orange juice(80s breakfast chic), and I didn’t want to because I didn’t want to spend time on it in the morning and preferred to go to bed all clean and toasty, and that made me rather unsophisticated and babyish.

Stirmish · 07/09/2024 23:32

I used to shower in the mornings till I had a job that meant I wanted to shower after work so just stick to that

Drinkandthink · 07/09/2024 23:34

I don't even shower, I bathe in the evenings. Very occasionally have a shower.
(We do also have a shower head over our bath so I'll use that to rinse myself off and rinse shampoo etc out).

Never been a morning washer - except face and hands. Takes too long and my hair takes forever to dry if I wash it. If I don't wash it, I can't bear the damp feeling around around the edges from the shower spray therefore I always wash it fully if I'm showering, air dry it then hairdryer. Can't go straight to hair dryer though as would take ages and still feel a bit damp. Hence, evening bathing/showering.

I'm 42, always done in the evening. So does my mum who is in her 70s and always has done.

Er yeeeeah... do you get really dirty or something then? My private parts don't need washing everyday. And my feet certainly don't.

I go to bed naked without a shower having done all those things unless I've been having a particularly sweaty/mucky day...

Milkand2sugarsplease · 07/09/2024 23:44

I'm 40 and always shower at night and wash in the morning.

  1. I hate showering when still tired, it makes me grumpy rather than waking me up.
  1. My hair is really long and there is no way I'm washing and drying it before work in a morning.

I still hate it on a weekend morning when I'm not rushing anywhere and would have time (and DH about to watch our toddler) so it's evening all the way here.

Elphamouche · 07/09/2024 23:45

DH in the morning, me in the evening.
