Isn't maomao chinese? Or have I just made that posting name up...

yingers74 · 06/01/2005 12:10

hello! am chinese and hubby english although I was born here! dd is also described by many as looking english and I have been mistaken for her nanny many a time!

suzywong · 06/01/2005 12:13

The Dragon, give up the crack pipe it's messing with your mind

Yes the delightful maomao is Chinese American

My DH is Chinese Malaysian but grew up in Australia
I am a big tall whitey and ds1 is unmistakabley Chinese and ds2 has fair hair, so DH would definitely know what you mean about being mistaken for the nanny yingers

florenceuk · 06/01/2005 12:49

Hi Blossom - we have the same mix, with DS (3) and DD (3mths). Have to say that DS definitely looks part-Asian to me, and DD looks almost the same as DS when he was a baby. However he is quite fair - hair is mousy brown esp when exposed to the sun.

BTW how's it going Suzy - we are off to NZ in 2.5 wks, only a day-long plane trip to endure with the demon toddler and the screaming baby!

suzywong · 06/01/2005 12:55

Hi Florence, good luck to ya!
I'm sure you've done the trip before with ds but just get your boobs out and prepare for the worst.

yingers74 · 06/01/2005 13:54

on a totally different note, has anyone seen joy luck club? i have read all of amy tan's books but the film for this book really made me cry, couild relate a lot!

maomao · 06/01/2005 13:59

I'm just a figment of the Dragon's and the Wong's minds (collective, or separate) .

Yingers, I did the family thing and saw Joy Luck Club with my mom and my sisters. I related to some, but not all of it. What parts affected you the most?

Blossom2, how old is your dd?

yingers74 · 06/01/2005 14:12

I guess the whole mum is from hong kong and i am pretty much british and not really understanding each other. Don't get me wrong we get on quite well but i often wonder if i am chinese enough. i guess i related to most of the film and the book, my gran has always told me similiar stories of her upbringing and suffering not to mention superstition, my mum and gran are very very superstitious!

Now i have my own daughter i wonder will I be able to expose her to enough chinese culture to make her feel chinese.

blossom2 · 06/01/2005 16:35

Hello everyone

my DD is going to be 3 years in March and i'm expecting my second in August 05. We're in paris at the moment.

I saw the Joy Luck club years ago, however have just ordered it from Amazon - spooky!!! I found the movie comforting when i was going through an identy crisis in my early twenties. I was actually born in Vietnam but my parents are chinese and we consider ourselves chinese more than vietnamese.

Who is looking forward to chinese new year???

maomao · 06/01/2005 17:30

Congratulations on number 2, blossom2! How have you been feeling? How long have you been in Paris?

Yingers, I know what you mean about exposing your little one to Chinese culture. I'm definitely not very traditionally Chinese (unless you include the love of food and family, of course).

I am looking forward to Chinese New Year, although I miss my family in the States. We used to get together and cook wonton and scallion pancakes. What I wouldn't give to have Mme. Wong's situation and have a Popo in my very own home! Sigh.

blossom2 · 06/01/2005 17:41

thank you!! i'm 11 weeks and its going okay - when i'm not sick and being reallly tired. I think i'm neglecting DD a little but i'm hoping to feeling better soon and we can have some fun.

we've been in paris about 3 months and not sure if i like it. But its still early days and these things usually take 6 months to 1 year to feel settled. so i'm trying not to stress too much.

I'm back in the UK for chinese new year and I can't wait. my family are holding a big get together with tons of food - a couple of chefs in the family!!

what is everyone else up to???

OP posts:
maomao · 06/01/2005 17:43

Well, I, for one, plan to stalk you once you get to the UK and crash your New Year's feast!

TheDragon · 06/01/2005 17:49

Thank goodness for that...

blossom2 · 06/01/2005 18:11

so what age are you child(ren) maomao?? and what brings you to the UK??

OP posts:
maomao · 06/01/2005 21:37

Ah blossom2, almost at the end of the first trimester --- hooray!

My dd is 20 months. I've been in the UK for a year and a half. We came here for my husband to get his PhD.

What brought you to Paris?

yingers74 · 06/01/2005 21:45

hello,

I think i am lucky that i live in london and hence have my family around me, not that close but still at least all in london. Like most uk chinese families, there are a several chefs amongst us and my mum is a fab cook too, my dad can cook but my mum prefers to keep him out! Not sure we will be celebrating chinese new year as my grandfather died not so long ago, xmas did not happen and new year will at most be low key.

blossom2 - I am also pregnant although only 4 and abit weeks! good luck with it all.

maomao · 06/01/2005 21:50

Yingers74, am terribly sorry to hear about your grandfather. But congratulations on your pregnancy! Can you recommend any places that you like to eat in London? Am dying for some good Chinese food....

yingers74 · 06/01/2005 21:54

if we do go out with family it tends to be in china town but basically where ever we go my parent's have some critism, too salty, too dry, too sweet etc etc

However, saying that chinese food in restaurants outside of china town are getting better, there is one round the corner from my house which is pretty good but very expensive!

maomao · 06/01/2005 21:56

Okay, here's a question for you --- any place in Chinatown where I could find steamed char siu bao? I've only found baked ones.... (I suppose I should just start my own "Where can I find?" Chinese food thread, eh?)

yingers74 · 06/01/2005 22:01

wow, i don't actually get char siu buns from china town, my mum gets them from localish chinese cash and carry places like loon fung and we steam them ourselves. i am surprised they bake them, i know that a lot of dim sum seems to be fried these days too, i guess this is easier than steaming!

maomao · 06/01/2005 22:03

sigh.

yingers74 · 06/01/2005 22:05

sorry maomao

maomao · 06/01/2005 22:06

Just googled "loon fung cash and carry" and it does not look very near me! I shall try to look more carefully in the grocery stores in Chinatown, but I swear I didn't see any there either!

yingers74 · 06/01/2005 22:07

where abouts do you live?

maomao · 06/01/2005 22:08

Hampstead, with all them other Americans!
