Happy New Year from Belfast.

Our New Year celebrations consisted of going to watch the CNY celebrations in St Georges Market. Very crowded!

And not a Lo Sang in sight! (have I used the right phrase here? It's that raw fish salad thing!)

suzywong · 30/01/2006 09:22

Kong hee fat choi

as my family let the red haired ghosts say

we didn't do anything but then MIL (the Chinese Malaysian one) has been away so there's no impetus. Next year though.

What animal is it this time?

alexsmum · 30/01/2006 09:52

dog

yingers74 · 31/01/2006 22:10

Happy new year all!

Not doing a big thing till sunday so don't really feel like it is new year although to be honest am not really into new year (chinese or otherwise) celebrations!

Hope all is good with you guys. Have been busy! Boiler broke down recently too!

trying2bgood · 05/02/2006 12:02

where is everyone? Changed my name.

wyls · 06/02/2006 19:26

i am here. DS not well at all, got a stomach bug, fever, runny nose and a cough oh and teething too so no sleep for me for the pass 2 days. So tired. He's better now but still not eating a lot but at least he's sleeping on his own again. I had to hold him all night last night ... things we do for our kids.

Anyway, did you girls have a good CNY? Mine was very quiet as it was also my DS christening day. It was good to see the family though.

Hope you are all well.

trying2bgood · 06/02/2006 22:04

Noticed you too posted on that cartoon thread as did I when it first started.

I can't quite believe how the whole thing has escalated over some caricatures and I did take a look at them just to make my own mind up.

trying2bgood · 07/02/2006 16:05

blossom2 · 08/02/2006 19:11

hi everyone

i've been struck down with this horriblw flu thats going round, along with DD1 (although her's is mild). DD2 is fine though and as lovely, smilely as ever. she really is a joy to be around.

so as always, DH cant take time off work, but the great this is that his boss is paying for me to have a nanny for the rest of this week!! i cant wait for her to get here tomorrow ...

i'm an ox, DD1 a horse, DD1 a rooster and DH a dog - suppose to be a lucky year for him this year!!!

how is everyone else?? so what was yr previous name tt2bg

trying2bgood · 09/02/2006 13:03

see rojak below blossom, hope u feel better.

smorg · 09/02/2006 14:58

I'm hoping for a change of luck this year, being a Dog!

Does anyone feel they are sort of being discriminated against by work for having children?! Have just been refused my previous full time hours. I had asked for reduced hours after my return last April after maternity and parental leave. Will prob have to look elsewhere, as money for nurseries will have to come from somewhere!!!

trying2bgood · 09/02/2006 18:14

smorg - when I was at work with dd1 I certainly felt discriminated against, hence the eventual giving up of work!!!!

Rojak · 10/02/2006 12:52

Smorg - I can't believe your employers are being so inflexible re: returning to full time hours - would've thought they'd be delighted that you were wanting to go back full time.

I have the reverse of your problem in that I want reduced hours but was turned down last year and will be attempting another request this year.

I was feeling a bit bypassed earlier this week when some new appointments were announced. A guy who was a grade below me three years ago is now a grade ahead of me. I suspect this is due to the time off I've taken to have kids.

I do feel torn that on the one hand, I want to have more time with my kids but on the other hand, I can see myself being bypassed at work.

I'm the year of the Dog too. Did your employers give you a reason as to why you couldn't have your regular hours back?

smorg · 10/02/2006 14:55

Rojak - Employers said about money etc blah blah. Do we ever get to know the real reason? Yes I thought too that they would like me to work full time again. They never replaced me whilst on maternity etc. The irony is i work for the Citizens Advice too!!

I took time off with kids because I felt the early years were the most important and that once they were in school etc that would be the time to go back to work properly. I waited so long to have kids and never thought I could have any and then two came along!! But I too feel that so many people have by- passed me. Sometimes it doesn't bother me but then other times it does.

Rojak · 11/02/2006 23:26

Smorg - quite ironic - would never have expected it of Citizens Advice!

Is it possible that they have spent the budget allocated for your full time salary on something else? How much notice are you giving them that you wish to return to full time hours?

The CA may work on a year to year budget so if you can give them as long a notice period as possible, perhaps it may be possible for them to reallocate that expenditure for the following year?

How old are your kids now? I thought that once they started proper school, childcare would be easier but I'm not finding that. I have to think about school exceptional closure days, half terms and then the entire summer holidays and it's harder to arrange care for these times than it would be if they were at a full time nursery. I'm also finding that I want to be at home to supervise homework etc.

smorg · 15/02/2006 14:15

DS and DD are almost 2 1/2. I'm thinking of putting them in nursery from Sept hence the need for full time hours from then. I suppose there's no rush til i get the free sessions from 2007. I could have returned to full time hours after mat leave but i would have been working just to pay someone else to enjoy them!! I suspect too that the budget for my full time salary has been 'spent' elsewhere.

Rojak · 16/02/2006 10:11

Don't know what it's like where you live but here in Northern Ireland, there are some preschools which are under subscribed by virtue of their location (eg. they could be a Protestant ethos school in a largely Catholic area so Catholic school always gets over subscribed) and they will take kids from as young as 2 years 10 months if they're potty trained.

Any chance you could get your 2 into a place like that this September and that would mean they would be in a (free) nursery for half a day and perhaps you would only need to pay for the other half (if you went back to work ft) or would ease the financial burden if you wanted to stay pt.

wyls · 23/02/2006 11:34

Just want to share some good news with you girls. I went into work yesterday to see my boss and he has agreed that i can work from home full time when i go back in april. I am so pleased. Not only i dont need to travel into london (1.5hrs each way) i also save a £300 a month on traveling. My DS is still going to the nursery but at least he doesnt need to be in there for a long 12 hrs day. Just so happy.

wyls - that's fantastic news!

Smorg - no worries - I'll probably be on here ranting later in the year if I don't get the reduced hours I want anyway!
