Quick question for any muslims out there.

Forgive me for my ignorance

But is it appropriate to say Happy Eid ul fitr? Or is there a more appropriate phrase to acknowledge the festival/celebrations will begin?

We normally say Eid Mubarak, but I think Happy Eid ul Fitr is just as good.

Thanks Saadia, does Eid Mubarak, mean happy eid?, because i am writing this on paper aimed at many Muslims so i'd like to look like i know what i'm talking about despite the fact i quite obviously don't!

mubarak means congratulations in arabic/ urdu/persian etc. depends on pronunciation. arabs tend to sayy it as mubrook

eid saeed is also common in the arab world.

anything would be lovely i think, except possibly merry eid, as that has too many connections with christmas.

Thanks stitch! I had realised that merry wouldn't be a good idea! But just so scared of offending people or looking like a complete wally.

Even if the pronounciation is different, is the spelling Mubarak widely recognised then? If so i'll go for that i think.

yes, i think mubarak is probably the most common. definitly on most cards i receive.

i dont think you can offend someone when congratulating them on there festival. can you?

No, unless ... you're all fibbing to me and Mubarak means something horrid .

But no i guess i couldn't offend anyone, but just want to do it right if do it at all y'know?

I think Happy Eid will do fine, after all its the thought that counts. I dont think anyone would be offended, as they would know that your intention was good. Did you manage to get hold of an eid card, or general greeting card? whichever, im sure it will be appreciated.

I'm not sending a card, its a message on some paperwork going to some of my clients - hence the reason i want it to be correct ! Thanks for everyones help!

Happy Eid is fine
Mubarak in the Arabic language means 'blessed' like the Hebrew "mevurach" and Mabruk means 'congratulations'. So Eid Mubarak would translate to 'Have a blessed Eid' rather than just 'Happy Eid' but that is the general jist of it.

IME the eating gets done the moment it's allowed (ie sunset?) so they're all done by this time!

I was working evenings with loads of Muslims until last week, and one of the lads used to bring in vast quantities of food made by his mother which got handed round because it was too much for him - it was lovely!

yes,

most of the muslims have finished eating by now...any way the idea is to not to 'over indulge', 'so eating in gay abandon?' is not really what we are meant to be doing come eating time, u are missing the point of ramadan.

Pomi, iwent to uni in leicester...met my hubby there, lived on upperton road near narborough road.small world, my brother lives in there too, in oadby. would be lovely to meet up with you if im there, plan to go dwn to leicester soon. I love leicester, as it has alot of fond student memories for me, whereabouts in leic do you live?

please accept my sincere apologies...i know im mixing you up with sum1 else. Although everything i said still stands, come and join us on the other thread. Where exactly is South Norward? Is it far for you to get to East London, bunch of us do regular meet ups and u are most welcome to attend the next one. When and where i dont knw, i have an assignment to hand in for uni on the 17th of nov, wanna get that sorted...well chat soon nd luv to ure bubs

Thanks for inviting but East london is very far and with the double boughy i can only manage to go somewhere on walking distance. But i would love to meet you maybe on weekend when dh keep the kids. The other thing is that I am going to Pakistan for 5 or 6 months. The main reason for that is I am having a very tough time looking after two young kids (22 and 11 months).
South Norwood is near croydon.

hi pomi, taking care of two little ones, who are so close together in ages is very very hard. especially if you dont have family nearby who can help. i have 19 months between my youngest two, and i found that to be very very hard work. went to pakistan for three weeks, and it was lovely in some ways, but just the same in others.. will you be staying with your own mom or with in laws? try and stay with your own parents if possible.#
i live in sutton, and drive. if yo ulike, perhaps we can arrange to meet up? cat me if you like.
