Do I sell my lovely wedding dress to pay solicitors fees cos we have found a lovely house??

We have finally found a house we like - we're 1st time buyers too so this has been a very long process

I am amazed at what we have to pay for and am concerned as to where we're going to get all this cash from - so I thought, should I sell my wedding dress? Might pay for solicitors fees?

I'm never going to wear it (nor fit it!) again am I?!

depends how sentimental you are really

RubyBlueberry · 07/05/2009 19:40

Hi fellow Ruby!
Ah... well I guess I have photos don't I - but is it really any use sitting in my wardrobe!

I've kept my wedding dress. Didn't like the idea of selling it, but something about what you've written sounds really nice.
I like the thought of something symbolising your marriage being used positively for something great for your relationship like your dream house.
I think I'd go for it!

rubyslippers · 07/05/2009 19:41

weeeell - mine is sitting uselessly in my loft as i cannot bear to part with it

i wuould Personally sell other things first

thisisyesterday · 07/05/2009 19:43

hmm i would.
could you cut a little something off, just as a memento.
obv not something huge or necessary that would make it unsellable or anything lol, but a bit of ribbon, or a sequin or something that wouldn't be noticed?

thisisyesterday · 07/05/2009 19:43

and I agree with blowninonabreeze. it isn't like you're just selling it for some cash to fritter away.
you'd be using it to get your very first house together, which is really lovely

Thebolter · 07/05/2009 19:45

Yes, I would sell my wedding dress in a shot if the money raised could be spent on something worthwhile.

It is instead festering in the under stairs cupboard .

I have lots of lovely photos of me in it and that's all I need.

Overmydeadbody · 07/05/2009 19:45

yes, definately sell it. You've used it for what you needed it for, so you might as well sell it now for something else that you need, as a married couple.

RubyBlueberry · 07/05/2009 19:46

Bless yous- I feel quite emotional all of a sudden

What else could I sell? or did you sell when you needed cash?

(or maybe get a evening job at tesco or a bar job?)

Sell it.
What is the point of keeping it?
You will have a HOUSE. Whoopie!
Far better to avoid debt/ extra on the mortgage than have a useless piece of cloth hanging in the attic.

Megglevache · 07/05/2009 19:48

yes, I would sell it.

ilovethesun · 07/05/2009 19:49

Think of it this way, you had a wonderful day, it took you to the first step in your married life and it could take you to another. You have the photos and the memory of wearing it. Lots of people hire dresses that they love for the day and don't have that physical momento. If it gives you a means to an end I would probably say do it! It would make me cry though, but I cried when I sold my son's clothes on ebay the first time..I'm a bit soft!

RubyBlueberry · 07/05/2009 19:50

Right - ebay here we come!
Thanks girls x

ahem.
I may have sounded very, um, mercenary there, but yes, it is all about making a good start in your life together.
This will be your home. Now, a home I can understand getting sentimental about. But not a frock. [mercenary]
Your frock will thus become part of your home and your new life together.

morningpaper · 07/05/2009 19:50

sell it but put a reserve on - I bought mine for £32

ilovethesun · 07/05/2009 19:52

Good luck!!! Just think some other beautiful bride will wear your dress!! And have lovely memories too x

jeee · 07/05/2009 19:52

I would sell it - if the price was right, but be prepared to find that you simply will not get enough money to make it worth your while. Many people will not buy second-hand wedding dresses.

Lizzylou · 07/05/2009 19:52

Sell it, definitely.
How exciting to be buying your first house

ilovethesun · 07/05/2009 19:53

Put a story about why you are selling it on ebay, bound to melt someone! At least then it won't have a sad connotation.

Northernlurker · 07/05/2009 19:54

So atm you have a dress but no house to keep it in?

SELL IT NOW!!!

WowOoo · 07/05/2009 19:55

Sold mine and I have never regretted it.

franch · 07/05/2009 19:57

Go for it ruby

morningpaper · 07/05/2009 20:09

Yes say something like: "Had a fantastic day in this dress, hope someone else will too!"

No whinging

RubyBlueberry · 07/05/2009 20:14

ha ha! I think I will!

Well on ebay they are selling for £35 which is not quite the amount I had in mind. Local papers then!
