DH HAS LEFT LAPTOP ON TRAIN- ANY ADVICE??

cheekymonk · 23/10/2008 18:52

Yes its true. DH left an almost brand new laptop on seat of train. We are not covered by Home Insurance. We have reported it relevant train company and to police. Anything else we should do??
I can't believe he has been so stupid and we have been so unlucky. We so cannot afford to lose something so expensive.

did he pay with a Visa card? That might cover him.....

FiendishFairyFay · 23/10/2008 18:56

Was it tonight - Will the train have reached its final destination yet? - If not, could the train company contact the guard and ask him to look for it?

cheekymonk · 23/10/2008 18:56

No, it was on on a catalogue account so technically not even paid for

It was on Monday afternoon. Dh couldn't even speak to a human being, it was all left pn answer machine and dh advised he would be contacted within 10 days..

sorry to hear that, what an ARSE

SnoopDog · 23/10/2008 19:00

I WOULD RETURN IT

stealthsquiggle · 23/10/2008 19:01

Does he work for the Security Services ?

Call train company pronto - depending on which one it is they may or may not call the train manager (if the train is still en route) - otherwise if you are lucky it will get picked up when the train is cleared/cleaned at the final destination.

Oh - just re-read OP - you have - what did they say?

Getting things back does happen - I got my phone back when I was similarly stupid unlucky

SnoopDog · 23/10/2008 19:02

caps, sorry,

i would though,

not sure how i would, have a look at files i guess,

is there anything which ties the laptop to you?

stealthsquiggle · 23/10/2008 19:02

If you can work out what station the train would have terminated at, call them directly and ask for lost property.

SnoopDog · 23/10/2008 19:03

how about getting on the same train on monday on the very slight off chance someone knows something?

i worry that even if someone found it and handed it in who is to say the person it was handed to has reported it as found IFSWIM

eekamoose · 23/10/2008 19:22

Execute a well-aimed blow to DH's head with frying pan.

ladytophamhatt · 23/10/2008 19:22

Dh is a train driver and he walks through the train at the end of his shift to check nothing has been left.
IIRC they are told to do it on all routes so you might be lucky and get a driver like my DH.

Deffo call the station teh trian terminated at, it would be there if the driver handed it in.

ladytophamhatt · 23/10/2008 19:24

What train operator was it, and which route?

mazzystartled · 23/10/2008 19:28

dh did this
he ran back to station
station manager rang next station
station manager at next station spoke to train driver, retrieved laptop
gave it to driver of returning train, intercepted at our station and handed back to much relieved dh
we wrote a glowing letter of thanks

i would hand in at station if found it
definitely ring train at terminating station or train operator. someone will find it and hopefully nvt jsut blow it up as suspcicious

cheekymonk · 23/10/2008 19:55

If I found a laptop on a train, I would hand it in to the train manager. I think a lot of people would. Fingers crossed for you!

cheekymonk · 24/10/2008 08:11

Yes I agree that a lot of people would hand in but a fair few wouldn't too, I'm sure. Bloody Dh!!!!!!

Huge sympathies, my dh had a brand new Iphone nicked from our local b&q. Stupidly, he put it down on a tin of paint for literally a couple of seconds whilst he looked at something next to it. It was gone in a flash and no prizes for guessing the thief didn't return it.

Really hope someone is honest enough to return your laptop, but somehow I doubt this will happen. Big sympathies to you both, I know in life's grand scheme it's not the end of the world, but it hurts doesn't it? My dh is a (usually!) sensible bloke but just had a momentary lapse and it was gone. We just chalked it down to experience, saved up and replaced it. Really felt like buying him a cord necklace thing to put around his neck with the damn thing attached to it so it doesn't happen again!
