We earn nearly 5K a month but we’re always skint

Me and my partner have been together 6 years and we have 6 kids between us. We both work and on paper we should be doing ok but honestly we seem to have no money left most months and I dont understand where its all going.

I earn about £1450 a month after tax and he usually brings home around £3200 but it depends on overtime. We get child benefit as well and I get a bit of maintenance for my older two but its not a massive amount. So I know we arent on a low income exactly, which is why its frustrating that we are always counting down to payday.

I have DS11 and DD8 from my previous relationship, he has two girls aged 13 and 10 from his previous relationship and we have a DS who is 2 and a DD who is 8 months. The older two live with me full time. His girls have only recently come to live with us full time because their mum moved away and they wanted to stay with their dad. Their mum isnt paying maintenance at the moment. I dont blame the girls for any of this and they are lovely, its just obviously a lot more expensive having two extra children here all the time.

We rent a 3 bed house and its quite full now but moving isnt an option at the moment. Rent is £850, council tax is about £180, then all the usual bills, phones, petrol, car insurance etc. He pays the rent and most of the bigger bills from his account and I tend to pay for the food shop, things the kids need and bits for the house. It sort of ended up that way rather than us sitting down and deciding it was fair.

The thing is he keeps saying I need to cut down on the food shop. Last night I spent £235 and he was genuinely shocked when he saw it, asking how on earth I had spent that much and saying I need to look at my spending. I know £235 sounds a lot but its for 8 people and I got nappies, washing stuff, toilet roll, packed lunch things, milk, fruit, meat etc. I wasnt buying loads of treats or anything particularly expensive. We were running low on quite a few things so it wasnt even just food.

I did get annoyed because he has been ordering more Airfix stuff recently. He builds the models and paints them and its his hobby, which I do understand, everyone needs something they enjoy. But he will order a kit for £35 then paints another time and tools and bits for another £20 or £30 and he doesnt seem to see it as much because its not all in one go. He says its his hobby and he doesnt go out drinking or spend money on nights out. Fair enough but I dont have money to just buy things for myself whenever I want. If I need clothes or something I usually leave it until the next month.

He says thats different because the food shop is something I can control and I need to plan better. He reckons I buy too much and we dont need half the things I get. I said if he wants to do the food shop and feed all of us for less then he can have a go because its easy to criticise when you arent the one trying to make meals out of whats left in the fridge. That probably didnt help the conversation.

He then said since his girls moved in everything costs more and I seem to have a problem with it. I honestly dont. They are his children and of course they should be able to live with their dad if thats what they want. But we didnt really sit down and work out how much more it would cost or change how we pay for things. We just carried on as before and now we are struggling even more.

He has debt repayments as well, credit cards and a loan from before, which come to around £500 a month. He says those are fixed payments and have to be paid so theres not much he can do about them. I agree they need paying but it means a lot of his wages are already spoken for before we have even bought food or put petrol in the car. His overtime isnt guaranteed either so some months he gets less than £3200.

I dont know if we are just spending too much or if this is what it costs to run a house with this many kids now. We dont have expensive holidays or go out much. The kids have clubs and school things to pay for, they grow out of clothes and shoes, the little ones need nappies and all that. Then theres always something else, a birthday or a school trip or something needs replacing.

We dont have a joint account and neither of us has a proper idea of what the other has left after bills. He thinks he pays most of the money out because the rent and bills come out of his account, and I feel like Im constantly spending mine on everyone and everything and never have anything left. We have never actually added everything up together which I know sounds stupid.

I dont want this to turn into me saying he shouldnt buy his hobby stuff or that his girls cost too much, because thats not what I mean. I just dont see how we can both be working and bringing that much in and still be skint all the time. Is £235 actually ridiculous for a weekly shop for this many people or do I need to look properly at what Im spending? And how do other people split everything when there are children from previous relationships as well?

There’s lots of messages about not paying the debt but surely getting the debt repaid is a good way of having more money you by forward.

the op also needs to look at how to bring in more income, it’s currently very low.

Yep let the taxpayer fund it all rather than her partner cutting his cloth accordingly.

Lexy2345 · 16/10/2026 15:10

Your partner needs to cut down on his airfix hobby, at least until the children are older. Airfix isn't cheap. Your food shop sounds fine, but I would challenge him to do the food shopping for a month and see what he comes up with.

xxx200 · 16/10/2026 15:11

Where is the extra money your partner now has going?
Child benefit and no longer paying maintenance, the money he paid for maintenance could be going towards the food shop.

Not either or.

Both.

Somethinggg · 16/10/2026 15:20

The shop isn't unreasonable for 8 people, no. There might be some scope to shave a bit off, but it's not unreasonable. However I think all you can do is keep telling him that he's welcome to attempt it for cheaper. And if he wants to, let him. Don't help, don't buy store cupboard type stuff. What you don't want is for him to attempt a week and declare it a piece of piss because he used the last dregs of everything and didn't buy any of the things that need to be on rotation, so you end up having to spend extra the week after.

And I echo previous posters who say you're going to have to sit down and fine toothed comb this. After his debt, you're on more like 4k a month it sounds like, and that isn't a vast sum for 8 people. It might not allow for treats either, there's no rule saying that just because you work hard means you can fund a hobby once the 6 kids in your house are paid for.

Yellow2024 · 16/10/2026 15:23

You have to almost treat it like a game. There are lots of ways to save money but of course its not life changing and the root is always earing more money than you spend.
If his debt is quite a lot look at a debt management plan.
I would probably switch to tesco online shopping, you collect point which can go towards days out and honestly I found tesco cheaper than lidl.
I do a bulk shop at boots once a month for essential s like toothpaste ect and have made £100 in points which will buy christmas presents.
Honestly there's no easy answer, young children are expensive.
We have a joint account as we've just found that easier to manage and then move some spending money to each of our monzo accounts.
We have a spreadsheet and plan the month and move money to where we would like it to be.
Realistically at this point I would just be trying to make sure you survive each month and then once the youngest are at school try and earn a bit more.

Blueorangegreens · 16/10/2026 15:23

Only read up to 6 kids; that was enough. 2 is expensive enough.

momtoboys · 16/10/2026 15:24

The obsession on how much you pay for your food shop is doing you no good. Your DH is unreasonable. One of you has to figure out a way make more money. That's the bottom line.

EveryoneLeaveMeTheFuckAlone · 16/10/2026 15:24

I can’t believe you haven’t sorted your finances out properly in six years of being together. Also, why have 2 more kids when you had 4 between you already? Didn’t you sit down and work out how much you’re going to need to afford two additional children?? What you are spending on shopping is not unreasonable btw. Make him do the meal planning, shopping, then actually be the one responsible for lunchbox prep and cooking everything so he’s dealing with the aftermath of his apparent cost cutting exercise.

Why should we the taxpayers pick up the bill???? To earn what they do AFTER tax and n.i you'd have to be earning AT LEAST 85K!!!!
Why should those of us earning much much less have to pay for those earning that much?
Not to mention all the freebies they'd get on top
Ludicrous
I do not want to pay for other peoples children

Yeah let those of us who sensibly stopped at two due to the cost, support those who decided to have an excessive amount of kids they couldn’t afford.

FrankAbagnalesLies · 16/10/2026 15:26

OP you are focusing on the wrong things. Your DH needs to stop adding to his debt and pay it off. That's £500 up a month right there. If he won't play ball, you know where you are.

CAB has income maximizing appointments. Book one and make sure you are claiming everything you can.

Long term you both need to get better jobs that pay more.

I'm surprised that you are surprised you are skint. I mean 6 kids? C'mon!

lol came here to say this, plus two adults, that’s 8 people! My kids stopped eating small portions around age ten, water, electricity, clothes , EVERYTHING costs so much more when you’re dealing with a household of EIGHT!!!

JudgeJ · 16/10/2026 15:27

FancyPantsThatArentThatFancy · 16/10/2026 11:06

It’s his debt that’s costing you money.

It's his ex being allowed to dodge her responsibilities regarding their children that's adding to the problem. A woman should pay up just as a man would be expected to do.

Presumably it’s two blended families not ‘six kids and counting’….

No it’s 4 each and counting

Thesque · 16/10/2026 15:29

That's a perfectly decent food shop and your meal plan is fine too. I defy anyone to do much better and feed 8 people for a week.
Your rent is cheaper than most so your outgoings aren't unusual. The two unusual things are the number of children and the money wasted on debt interest.

You need to write down all the expenses and all the money coming in. Your partner either wants to be fair or doesn't but he's not sharing the burden at the moment.
His borrowing on credit cards will never end well.

Why do people have such a problem with people using fabric conditioner? It costs about £20 a year at most, so isn't going to be a noticeable saving in anyone's budget.

It's a completely unnecessary product.

Holidaymodeon · 16/10/2026 15:30

MrHankyTheChristmasPoo2 · 16/10/2026 15:29

6 kids between them. I don’t think it’s excessive or feckless to have three kids in a family

JudgeJ · 16/10/2026 15:32

His girls mum doesnt work no, so I dont know how much she would be able to pay anyway.

How nice for her, she has no responsibility for her children and doesn't bother working! This would be uncceptable from a father and it's just as unacceptable from a mother. She needs to be told to get a job and support her children,

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 16/10/2026 15:33

Six children
Maintenance
Debt

The food shopping is reasonable. Take him with you to see the actual prices.

Exactly this.

Calliopespa · 16/10/2026 15:34

Bjorkdidit · 16/10/2026 14:29

Well it's all the OPs fault then isn't it, there's no point her trying to do anything constructive to ease her situation and she should allow her DP to continue spending their money on crap and getting them into debt, while she's tying herself in knots trying to feed them all for as little as possible. Hmm

Nobody is letting the DH off the hook, nobody is saying it is "all the OP's fault then." That's childish overstatement.

IMO the lion's share of this is the DH's fault, however, firstly he hasn't posted for us to lay into him, and secondly it is equally unhelpful to just all berate the DH without putting things in perspective. Op DID decide to have children when it would take the combined blended family to 6 children. She is now part of what her decision - not just her decision, but her decision nonetheless - has created.

People are trying to help, but saying "oh, there's nothing can be done, you can't send the children back" isn't proactive or useful either.

It's a completely unnecessary product.

And damages clothes. Increases the fire risk of items. Contains artificial fragrances proven to disrupt hormones which are partially responsibility for earlier onset puberty and potentially responsible for certain hormone related cancers. Reduces the lifespan of the washing machine. Causes damage to the environment.

Lots of reasons to dislike it!
