I think the PIP claimers here are caught in the usual web of assuming nobody else ever incurs extra expenses that are out of their control, or encounters unforeseen bills

The ‘how would I pay for X’ won’t really work because having to find solutions is an every day thing for working people

I also work. My pip doesn’t cover even half of what I pay out due to my disabilities. I’d hate to actually sit down and figure out what it cost.

I’ve paid for adaptations in my house. I’ve paid for special orthotics. Special shoes. I pay for deliveries for groceries.

there’s lots more I’d like that would make my life easier but I can’t afford them. I do make those decisions. Excluding my car, I get £337 every four weeks. If you think I’m living it up on that, you’re welcome to my disabilities to see if you think the life I have is worth the £337.

roaringdragon · 15/10/2026 21:21

Those receiving PIP have incur extra expenses out of their control and encounter unforeseen bills on top of their disability related costs. It is not instead of.

Finding solutions is also part of everyday life for disabled people on PIP. Some problems don’t have solutions though not matter how much effort you put into it.

LilyBunch25 · 15/10/2026 21:21

"Allseeingallknowing" what was your reason for this thread?

Constantrunner · 15/10/2026 21:22

Why do you think I can answer that? I was explaining what social prescribing is.
Certainly activities that distract can help with pain management.

XenoBitch · 15/10/2026 21:22

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 15/10/2026 21:18

Yeah but not up to the state to solve every last problem is it. If you choose to share your life with someone then you’re their problem, not everyone else’s.

I do not live with my DP. If I did, I would lose a lot of money.. and that is based on UC.
If PIP was means tested too, many more couples would live apart.
I have been told on here that I am contributing to the housing crisis because I wont live with my DP.

If you means test PIP, more people will choose to live apart.

roaringdragon · 15/10/2026 21:23

If you cut DLA/PIP, you will increase costs to the state in other areas. For example, more will turn to hospital transport or the low income HTCS, more parents will pursue transport to education placements, more will turn to social care packages, CHC funding and/or residential education placements, more parents with pursue further special educational provision (e.g. where they are paying for private physio but can’t afford it if DLA is cut so look to secure it in their DC’s EHCP when previously they didn’t bother), more carers will reach carer burnout and cost the NHS money, there will be more/longer admissions to hospitals for disabled people…

I hate to be that poster but that’s just the rough and smooth of life. The state can’t financially reimburse every undesirable situation. I’m disabled with expenses and wouldn’t get PIP even if I applied for it despite being very ill. I pay my own expenses, c’est la vie. I feel like everyone just wants more and more

ExpectMore · 15/10/2026 21:23

roaringdragon · 15/10/2026 15:24

I don’t think you can conclude 1 in 6 PIP claimants don’t have any costs when the survey only included 2,500 people.

It’s a statistically significant sample size. Assuming the sample has been selected it such a way to adequate represent the population at large.

LilyBunch25 · 15/10/2026 21:23

Allseeingallknowing · 15/10/2026 17:03

So there needs to be a better way of assessing claimants and their needs. Instead of cash , perhaps extra physio or other therapies, more aids in the house supplied etc.

Physio......oh my goodness. For LT disabilities? Do you realise how inappropriate and unhelpful that is in so, so many ways? Aids yes, which in many cases are already provided by ASC following OT assessment. When not qualifying for larger adaptations often PIP has to help with the cost.

On that note then, if you have kids they’re your responsibility no one else’s. Don’t ask for your wages to be topped up, don’t ask for help towards childcare, if you procreate with some feckless fucker who doesn’t pay then tough shit. Sort yourself out. And while we’re at it, if you don’t save for your retirement then that’s your fault, no one else’s. Let’s get rid of pension credits too. Why should disabled people be the only people who should suffer?

Tbh I think it’s just about ending routes into these things for some people. I know that sounds awful. But we have a lot of people on here posting day and night claiming they can’t work, they sound intelligent and lucid. And lots of able bodied teens with normal mental faculties who ‘can’t be left alone ever’ and ‘will likely never work’. Unfixable problem.

Physio is only get once every I think it’s 6 weeks but it might be once a month on the nhs. I can’t predict what day it will be - you have to book it online and it runs 10-4 for appointments. How do I do that and keep functioning and more to the point, how do I do that and keep my job?

id be off work every week for the guts of 1.5 or 2 days if I didn’t pay for things myself.

or is it better that I’m not working or paying tax and the state has to fund it all?

My son is supposed to have NHS physio once a week but it doesn't always happen. Occasionally it is at his school but usually, it is at a health centre completely out of the way. It isn't very consistent.

Private physio to be fair isn't in a much better location but it is consistent, reliable and so much better for his progress.

And that is my point. Given the diversity amoung the disabled population of PIP, I don’t think it is feasible that such a % of claimants can fully represent the cohort as a whole.

Just a quick reminder that we are currently £3 trillion in debt.

Stop letting in people who haven’t paid a penny into the system then.

As God is my witness if it comes to pass what people are advocating for on here -vouchers for taxis, vouchers for tesco , vouchers for Electricity etc then I will take my own life.
Sorry if that offends anyone but it offends me that it would push me into that situation.
The daily pressure of looking after two autistic, ADHD people with multiple anxieties, fibromyalgia (DD) and paraplegic (DH) combined with advocating for both of them as neither will speak on the phone/make appts themselves etc, having to do all the cooking, cleaning , washing, coping with the regular meltdowns and occasional punches, attending every appointment, shopping for the ‘right’ foods, the ‘right’ clothes, listening to them drone on with their latest obsession, -I swear to God if I have to take on more admin to request fucking electric vouchers then that will be the straw that breaks this camels back.
YES ITS DEHUMANISING. Just read this thread to see how people look down on you for claiming PIP.

Ive spent over £3000 changing two toilets so DH can use the loo and retain a shred of dignity. DD costs a fortune at the dentist as she can’t barely brush her teeth and goes through an electric toothbrush about once a month as they get broken when she gets so frustrated with it and herself.
DH hasn’t had a shower in a year though as his OT told him he had to stop using the shower as he was at risk of a fall. We are still waiting for the council - I had a letter in July telling me it would be done after April 2027 . I must have made 50 phone calls since then to the council (“the waiting time today is 45minutes,”), the contractor who does the work, the OT, and my MPs office.

It will be nearly two years by the time it’s done -maybe. Two years. How many of you would go two years without a shower.?? If everyone had to rely on the council the wait time would go up and up. So for all of you on here with your ‘get rid of PIP and get the council to do adaptations- oh please fuck off.

How much is it going to cost hiring more civil servants to sift through everyone’s PIP claim and see how much they think each person should be allocated in these ‘vouchers’?? What happens when one month I need oil that’s £700 but none for the next two months? How much extra stress for ME filling out fucking forms and begging ??

Thanks everyone. You really know how to kick disabled people when they are down.

Oh and I cry every day. Every day something happens to make me cry.
Today - The doctors who will send a nurse round to give DH his flu jab but won’t give me one at the same time. I have to make an appointment, get someone to sit in the house with DH, and go to the surgery for my jab. “Rules innit”.
Why? Why ?
How much more are we expected to cope with?

Not true. Hospital transport is hard to get and you get transported around with other people so it takes all day. None would choose this if they have an alternative like a taxi or a lift.

This is pip we are talking about so it's adults, not children. People already try and get social care packages, but again the bar is very high. Generally people who qualify get enough to meet the basics and no more.

I think a lot of working people are on the edge of taking their own lives.

I’ve seen grown men crying with the stress of over taxation, stagnant wages etc and purse strings constantly being tightened with higher workloads and less staff

Nobody is safe in that regard

I agree with this. The majority of my PIP goes on therapies that keep me out of hospital where I’m sure I would cost the taxpayers more than the £300 I get every four weeks.

I understand the concern about the welfare budget and can understand why people are questioning it but coming after disabled people is the wrong thing to do.

What is needed is investment in early intervention and the NHS overall. If I could have received appropriate treatment with the NHS early enough I might not have ended up at the point of being eligible for PIP.

And again. Pip is not an out of work benefit. I work. Full time. And I have all those stresses you mention on top of dealing with significant and life long disabilities.

It puts people in touch with support groups and activities to improve mental health. For example social groups that support people with downs syndrome and thus support their social life.
No one is saying it cures people although it can help a lot with mental health issues.

My social life isn't an issue, my disability is the issue. I don't claim PIP to help my mental health, I claim PIP because I can't walk! How would a social group help with that? Unless you're happy for me to have transport paid for me, I would have to sit at home alone and join a virtual social group. You think that would be better for my mental health - and social life - than actually going outside and meeting people in person? You think I wouldn't mind that I can't shower, or clean, or cook, and I have no money - as I'll have my weekly online chat to look forward to?!

Plus my aunt has an extremely good social life, she is very friendly and has a great group of people around her. But she can't drive, she can't manage her own shopping, or her own money, or self-care etc. How would an online social group help her cook her dinner safely every night when her large group of friendly neighbours can't?

I don’t think anyone who can’t help themselves should suffer, unlike you.
