Do all 18 years old go on UC if they cannot find a job

Do the family needs to show their income or the new adult is considered their own financial unit now , even if they live with the parents and their UC is given them

Benefits are supposed to be minimal and a temporary measure. Not a living expense. £400 covers food with money left over to contribute to bills

Please go away. Do not respond to anything I post again. Your comments are not welcome and very judgmental

You're the person who referred to me as loving freebies when I broke my leg in three places and ended up in hospital. 400 pounds is not enough for people to live on. Some peoples fuel bills just now are 300 pounds a month - again - your privilege is showing if you think someone can heat their home in the winter - pay fuel bills and travel and feed themselves easily on 400 pounds.

And they don't care why you left the job. Boss feeling your arse up? The Job Centre still sanction you if you leave.

Absolutely. I have worked in some horrible jobs in my time in the charity sector. Several people left because of a bullying manager. There was one job I did walk out of - thankfully I got work within a week. I suggest all the people who think being on UC is fun and that we are all so spoilt and pampered hop over to the dwp subs on reddit because there are people being made ill by their working conditions and are too terrified to leave incase they get sanctioned

Antiquerosegold · 03/02/2026 18:05

I said food as it is essential. I am sure people can turn their heat off as it is not essential.

Many people have had to cut back on heating. There are pensioners choosing between food and warmth.

Benefits are a temporary measure.

scottishgirl69 · 03/02/2026 18:11

I was also gang stalked for 15 months. By a group of people online. Random people who have harassed other women. They found my address and sent packages to my home. They tweeted my address and photos of my house. I was doxxed hundreds of times. They reported me to the dwp for benefit fraud I wasn't committing.

I was working all the way through being stalked and getting a top up as my wages were rubbish.

I have ptsd and by the time they finished with me I didn't feel like living anymore - but the judgemental poster who thinks I love freebies will be pleased to know that I wasn't on UC for a long period after that - due to reasons I won't specify on here.

I was told by the dwp twice that I was fit to work when I was at the lowest point in my life - I was also told that I was fit to work with a broken shoulder and torn rotator cuff too. You have to break both to qualify

So the poster who says I love freebies. You would not have wanted to have walked a mile in my shoes over the last few years. I can assure you of that - and keep your horrible opinions to yourself. They are not welcome

I have a colleague in my current job who is 30smth....he calls his girlfriend every day on the phone who is a bit needy...she had a carer's job and this is what she wants to do full time but neither of them drive and currently live in a village. So she applies for jobs, but only care home jobs to which she can catch a bus. How they live so young in a village house? She must be claiming loads

£400pm (or someone over 25... younger get even less) is miserable.
It might be ok for an adult child living at home... but some people have left home, and if you live alone you just end up in debt on that amount.

Crystalovertherainbow · 03/02/2026 18:15

so he looks after her while she claims, just like a mum would do for her son or daughter

What's this got to do with your original post. How can they be so young and live in a village house. He works. She works. They probably pay rent. And their life isn't any of your business.

Benefits should be temporary. It is up to the individual to turn their life around.

I have been out of work and had numerous varied perso al struggles and claimed nothing. I had to keep my living expenses below the poverty level. In that situation £400 sounds comfortable.

scottishgirl69 · 03/02/2026 18:19

I rented a flat on my own at the age of 26- because my wages covered the cost of my rent. Seriously. Why are so many people invested in other peoples lives just because they might be claiming benefits?

Seriously, there are posters on a wind up on this thread. The OP seems to be having fun as well.

Great. Can you let the water company, gas, electric etc know that I only need to "contribute" to bills. Because they've wrongly been charging me in full for years!

Living in a village doesn't mean everyone is rich 🤷

Fuel bills for some people at the moment are 250 to 300 pounds a month. There is nothing comfortable about having to heat a home. Pay travel. Pay a proportion of council tax. Pay for a phone as you have to have one on Uc and feed yourself to boot. You're absolutely trolling. I live near a community table and it's queued out the door most weeks. Because people are getting free food - so they can heat their homes

I have experienced it first hand so I know what is possible.

So you have empathy for those who do nothing to improve their lot but a scenario like mine is ridiculed.

That is precisely why the country is in such a mess. Rewarding the........ With a ...... Atitude to boot.

This seems to be a thread of. I can manage on 20p a week so why can't other people.

Let them eat cake!!! I spent years not putting my heating on because I couldn't afford to. I had a leccy blanket.

At the moment I have just had solar panels installed by the Scottish govt - they gave money to my landlord to install and that will be a lifesaver for me going forward

BTW. Everyone gets them not just people on benefits

If folk think it's so easy to run a home on 400 quid a month particularly in the winter when it's freezing (I'm in Scotland). Very good luck to them. Very good luck with it being minus temps for 8 weeks at a time and not being able to have the heating on as much as you would like

When was this? The 90s? £400pm for everything will not actually cover everything at all nowadays.

Nah - you're the person who said I loved a freebie after a triple leg fracture. Btw. Two post grads and two degrees here. Plus I'm a qualified personal trainer. I have always worked - until I got stalked and I had a breakdown but even then the dwp kept telling me I was fit for work.

I have done plenty to improve my lot. But sometimes life gets in the way. If you care so much about 18 year olds claiming UC you need one massive reality check. Because life isn't easy for a lot of people

Tbh I cant remember the last time I put my heating on. That's partly because half my radiators dont work so the rooms we need heated stay cold. My LL hasn't done anything and I cant afford to move. I hoped that going back to work was going to improve things, but actually my MH has nose dived again and im probably about to get sacked.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope things work out for you. Please consider applying for pip and lcwra if you go on UC- not easy to get. But consider it. If you are in Scotland it's adult disability payment.

If you need to chat you can private message me any time.
