Hi,

Just need some advice so I had a car insurance renewal a week ago and it had gone down alot so it was £44 a month but then realised they had my old address down, I moved into this new address last year and know damn well I rang them and changed it, called them up and they realised it was their fuck up on their end so they changed it but now the renewal price has gone from £44 a month to £81!!!!!!!!! Like what the actual fuck? Because of a change of address can these robbing bastards actually do this? Can I fight this and demand I have the same price as quoted because it's not my fault that the address was not changed even though I rang them? Also the new house has its own off road parking and private drive it's a cul de sack so I don't get how it's can go up so much I've also got a 6 year no claims bonus.

I'm fuming!!!! Like literally mad 😡😡

So you rang them to advise change of address? And you didn’t get an confirmation in post that address had been changed?

in short, no nothing you can do aside from give them a buzz and see if you can negotiate a little off

but ultimately your new address must be much higher risk than old address. Where are you parking overnight?

SoScarletItWas · 01/03/2025 14:33

What you pay reflects your address, so yes. If there’s more crime in the new postcode, then insurance will cost more.

Maybe get some fresh air before you call them, you sound like you’re about to implode

Charcoalpen · 01/03/2025 14:33

did previous address have a garage?

Mrsttcno1 · 01/03/2025 14:35

Your price depends on many things, a big one being where you live.

It sounds like you could do with a glass of water and some fresh air to be honest.

ohtowinthelottery · 01/03/2025 14:36

How many days before the renewal date did you ring them to point out their mistake? They will have done a new quote with the change of address. The closer you get to the renewal date, the more the premium goes up. So if it was a few days before renewal (rather than 1 month) then that is likely to account for most of the increase rather than the change of address - unless you've moved to a dodgy area!

The optimum time for getting renewal quotes is around 21 days before renewal - according to Martin Lewis.

I rang them few days after I moved here, they didn't change my address when I originally called them last year, I've just realised they hadn't changed it so I rang them this morning and they admitted it was a fault their end that the address was not changed as my call from last year to change it was logged on the system, but because of this new change of address today my renewal has now gone up to £81 yet if I hadn't rang them took out the renewal and then changed my address they would of just charged me the admin fee of £50 to change it and I'd still pay the new price of £44 my car is now in its own drive before it was opposite my house on a road so this is where I don't get how it's been doubled. I live in a cul de sac now quieter area too! Yes I am about to implode because it's disgusting what insurance companies charge.

All you can do is ring around and get more quotes

Yes the whole thing sucks

It's always been driven by risk and a big thing there is where you live and where you keep the car at night.

When I moved from Leeds to London 45years ago car insurance went from bearable to unaffordable. Better after I was 21 and more so 25.

Went down a lot when I moved to a village in Northants.

Charcoalpen · 01/03/2025 14:40

Ring others
and then you’ll know whether in line with what alternatives would charge
I imagine it will be

I'm 34 in April, I've never had an accident and I've been with this company since a year after I passed. The price is a joke.

Also bear in mind if you're paying an annual policy monthly the payments are usually installments on a loan.

If you were paying £44 and should have been paying £60 there's a gap to fill over the remaining life of the policy.

Reugny · 01/03/2025 14:42

It's done on postcode and how many claims people in that area make, and not just on where you park.

I lived in an area where most people had off road parking I then moved temporarily to one of my brothers' addresses where everyone parks on the road, and my insurance went down a lot. So much so the insurance company had to give me just over £100 back as I pay annually.

Seriously op, just tap in the info to a
comparision site. now rather than mumsnet!!

Bromptotoo · 01/03/2025 14:43

OP where, broadly, did you move from and to?

Kinneddar · 01/03/2025 14:47

yet if I hadn't rang them took out the renewal and then changed my address they would of just charged me the admin fee of £50 to change it and I'd still pay the new price of £44

No they wouldn't. They'd have recalculated it with the new address and put the cost up by the same amount.

I changed address midway through my policy and my monthly premium changed as soon as they updated my address

I'm in the same town, I moved 2 mins from the old address if travelled by car.

Exactly this.

There’s no way around it OP you’d have still had the price put up.

It’s also your responsibility to ensure your records are up to date and correct so you really should have checked your address was correct after updating.

Bromptotoo · 01/03/2025 14:57

Have you asked if they can explain the different risk factors between the addresses?

I fear you'll just have to suck it up until renewal as cancelling mid term is ruinously expensive.

@Mrsttcno1 I haven't had any correspondence from them this renewal process through email was the only thing I've had since last year, so I assumed they had changed my address as I had already rang them and told them about the new address. As I said it was their error that this has happened they didn't do it their end up did my end of it by ringing them and telling them I had moved.
