Hi,

Just need some advice so I had a car insurance renewal a week ago and it had gone down alot so it was £44 a month but then realised they had my old address down, I moved into this new address last year and know damn well I rang them and changed it, called them up and they realised it was their fuck up on their end so they changed it but now the renewal price has gone from £44 a month to £81!!!!!!!!! Like what the actual fuck? Because of a change of address can these robbing bastards actually do this? Can I fight this and demand I have the same price as quoted because it's not my fault that the address was not changed even though I rang them? Also the new house has its own off road parking and private drive it's a cul de sack so I don't get how it's can go up so much I've also got a 6 year no claims bonus.

I'm fuming!!!! Like literally mad 😡😡

Actually car insurance has gone down recently, take a peek at martin Lewis website for latest figures, I just don't want it out there that we need to carry on putting up with increases!

My renewal came in, it had increased by 160, got a decrease off 220 off that in the end

However, if you are using comparison websites, then yes it's your postcode and unavoidable

They really haven’t gone down 😂😂 Different companies offer different prices based on their own experience as well as full market experience. It always pays to shop around, but prices are never going to come down as such.

Well according to a newsletter I got from Confused.com premiums have actually decreased significantly over the past year.

They may well have said this .. that’s based on their own data for the companies they search, also probably biased to get you to use them. Not necessarily true for the whole market. Hope it is though .. can’t wait for us all to get premiums back to what they were years ago 🙄

So why is my upcoming renewal significantly lower than last year. I'm at full no claims, nothing has changed, same insurer

Obviously I did comparison sites as well and all premiums were lower that I paid last year

Clearly all the major car insurers know less about the current state of the market than you do but Im not going to let them know they're wrong

TheMeasure · 04/03/2025 13:16

My renewal (2 reasonably high-end cars plus house insurance) went down by about 10% this time.

This is a daft comment and makes no sense.
Why on earth would a huge number of insurers all of a sudden make their premiums on average 16% lower than 12 months ago, if in reality premiums had actually gone up? If premiums were in reality higher, why would confused decide to reduce them this particular year, even though premiums on confused over the previous couple of years have increased in line with market increases.
The fact is, over the whole market, premiums have fallen in price over the last year.

QforCucumber · 04/03/2025 14:22

I hadn't rang them took out the renewal and then changed my address they would of just charged me the admin fee of £50 to change it and I'd still pay the new price of £44

this is not the case, when you change address mid way through they will still recalculate the premium, you have actually saved by them not increasing it mid way though last year,

Two comments in relation to this. Premiums will never be the same as they were years ago, just like the cost of fuel/food won't be either. It's called inflation.

Secondly, Confused are heavily regulated just like any other financial services provider and they can't just spout any old rubbish to get people to use their site.

Find a local insurance broker and ask them to quote.
Do not ask the comparison sites for multiple quotes because their algorithms will put the price up especially if you change a few items e.g. car in garage to on drive, adding partner or just insured ad infinitum.

Also blatantly untrue. Price will change only if you change the risk details.

I believe there is an element of truth to this, the advice is always to clear cookies between each quote if trying multiple options. Not saying that it automatically means you'll be quoted a higher price though.

johnd2 · 04/03/2025 17:22

Get the black box, it's just a tiny battery powered thing that you never have to charge, then after a year if your driving is classed as good enough they turn it off and you get a cheaper price without it.
Every time I went out it was complaining about harsh breaking or acceleration but my driving score stayed really high.

Blushingm · 04/03/2025 17:38

Your new address will be a higher risk so the price reflect this.

Where the car is kept has a huge bearing on the price of insurance, so trying to demand the price for the old address is just silly

I haven't demanded yet. It's on its own private drive.

I've looked at renewals on go compare, they are coming up as £67 and on but with a black box. I'm not having a black box, I don't get how they can charge me this much I honestly don't. £44 to now £81 it's disgusting, I will ring them next week when I'm calmer as I've had a shit show of a week and that was the cherry on the cake.

It's not disgusting - you've moved somewhere that is a higher risk to them. Not sure why you don't seem to grasp this

Blushingm · 04/03/2025 19:47

You actually say 'can I demand' - shirt answer is no

They've given you a price, you don't like it so go elsewhere

I think it's supposed to read "if you dont like this THREAD....."

That's how I read it too. Or you could deliberately misread it....any excuse to have a bun fight eh🤪

Ariesburn · 05/03/2025 08:01

@Blushingm reason for this is because I've checked this area online at crime rates and it's not higher than where I was before, as I have said this is a quiet road, basically every house down here has cameras including mine and I have off road private parking. It's a cul de sac with about 15 houses. My old road had someone set my neighbours car on fire this is why I don't understand their 'quotes' I even lived on an estate before which used to be rough and it was cheaper!!! Like work that out? We always had cars burned out and stolen down there! THIS IS WHAT IM NOT GRASPING!!!!

@Vettrianofan yes it auto corrected and I posted before I could change it. It was meant to say thread yes.

Parking on a driveway can sometimes be more expensive as it's easier to steal the car as thieves know the location of the keys

BlumminFreezin · 05/03/2025 09:34

THIS IS WHAT IM NOT GRASPING!!!!

You don't have to grasp it. Their pricing model is their decision, not yours.

I mean yes, you can kick off, demand, complain, wind yourself right up. Then get a complaint response telling you their pricing models are based on a number of factors and they can't expand on these further but the price is correct.

Annoying but trying to fight it is truly pointless op. If you don't like the price or service from this business, go elsewhere - that's your only option here.

I just always thought that your age, whether you've claimed before and how long you have driven for counts. I'm sure it used to. It's just very angering what they charge. As I said previous you don't even get what your car's worth either if it gets written off my friend has just had a write off claim for hitting a deer and they only got half of what the car was brought for 10 months before. I just think it's disgusting and insurance companies just mug people off.

It does count
Age, no claims and how long you've driven for can all make a difference yes

It's because they know we NEED car insurance because it's illegal if we don't and required by law, that's why they charge what they like when they like. I've been driving since 2016 not had one claim, I drive a 1 litre no mods or anything a standard 1litre. I'm 34 in April. Like I say for me it just blows my mind 🤯
