Hi,

Just need some advice so I had a car insurance renewal a week ago and it had gone down alot so it was £44 a month but then realised they had my old address down, I moved into this new address last year and know damn well I rang them and changed it, called them up and they realised it was their fuck up on their end so they changed it but now the renewal price has gone from £44 a month to £81!!!!!!!!! Like what the actual fuck? Because of a change of address can these robbing bastards actually do this? Can I fight this and demand I have the same price as quoted because it's not my fault that the address was not changed even though I rang them? Also the new house has its own off road parking and private drive it's a cul de sack so I don't get how it's can go up so much I've also got a 6 year no claims bonus.

I'm fuming!!!! Like literally mad 😡😡

LOL what a shit excuse for the price to be higher!! Like what is the logic for that one? What a joke. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Most burglars will act alone. If they break into your house to steal car keys they can still only drive one car away even there are two in the driveway. If a thief breaks in to a house with two cars in the driveway there is a 50% chance they steal one car and a 50% chance they steal the other. But if you only have one car there's 100% chance that they steal that one. So the part of the premium relating to theft could be higher for one car than two. If you take it to the extreme, imagine you own a car showroom and have 30 cars in it. No-one is raiding that with a team of 30 people so the chances of any individual car in the showroom being stolen is actually very low.

Also, I have genuine experience of where having two cars prevented a theft! The one and only time I was burgled there were two cars on the driveway but my car was blocking my wife's in. They found the keys to hers and wanted to steal it but couldn't get it past mine so left it on the drive and abandoned the keys. They never found the keys to mine. If we had only had the one car it would have been driven off.

Do you mean payment of the first months premium? A down payment isn't a thing that I've ever come across in decades of buying insurance

She means the deposit you pay when you take a new policy out

loveawineloveacrisp · 05/03/2025 17:33

@purpleme12 which is ether the first month or two months premium, depending on the insurer.

purpleme12 · 05/03/2025 17:40

Yes I guess it is. Just always called a deposit

EternalSunshine19 · 05/03/2025 17:41

Don't accept the renewal. Go on compare the market and see if you can get a cheaper quote. If you've already accepted the renewal I don't think there's much you can do.

Its not a deposit though, it's part of the premium that you pay when you choose to pay monthly not to pay up front. I think its important in this context to use the right terms

@EternalSunshine19 She's already done price comparisons, and found they are all coming out around about the same as the new quote from her old company. Which proves what everyone is saying, is right {it's the postcode} but OP doesn't want to hear it.

Ariesburn · 05/03/2025 19:02

@CarpetKnees it's not that I don't want to hear. I accept it's the postcode what I don't agree with is the prices they give.

Yeah it's like 2 payments upfront or something that's what I had to do with this company. I don't have £160 odd just spare to go with someone else. Which is annoying. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Well I work in insurance and that's literally what it's called. In all the scripting we have to say that's signed off and everything
