Hi, has anyone with Barclays not received their child benefit today? Starting to panic!

Thank you x

Barclays announced yesterday that there was a problem with the technological systems. Apps and online banking weren’t working and people didn’t get their salaries. Sorry for you.

Barclays have had a massive outage

twilightermummy · 01/02/2025 09:04

It's a nightmare. All of my money is trapped in there. I usually do the food shop this morning whilst my daughter is at class. I had two bills expected to be paid yesterday. There doesn't seem to be any explanation of what is going on.
I think I'll start putting money across various banks to prevent this as it's becoming quite a regular thing, although Monzo has never gone down for me thinking on it...

Bromptotoo · 01/02/2025 09:22

Always worth having a 'spare' current account or a credit card with another outfit.

StarCourt · 01/02/2025 10:06

i'm with Barclays and having massive issues too. Had a shopping delivery scheduled for today which now won't happen and tried moving some money from my savings account to my current account which didn't work so I can't get any cash out either. I do have a card for my savings account but all of my local Barclays branches have closed down in the last year so i can't get cash out that way either.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/02/2025 10:10

I work for a firm of solicitors and our account is with Barclays. The conveyancing department were going spare yesterday trying to get completions through.

Donemum · 01/02/2025 10:10

Yes barclays are having major problems. I have money "stuck" in my savings account which I can't move to my current account. Also due carers and child benefit this morning which isn't showing. I went to the atm and it spat my card out. I have 3 children who I havent been able to feed since last night. Used the last of the bread for toast for their tea. It's an absolute nightmare. My gas has ran out and my house is freezing. Electric won't be far behind. I'll be moving banks when this is sorted as I'm just absolutely scunnered.

I think they said you can still pay by card in person.

So easy !

Dreammouse · 01/02/2025 10:12

You'll get it once they're back up and running, all payments via Barclays have been affected included peoples salaries.

Yeah they're telling everyone that you can still use your card but you can't. Tried online and in the shop this morning and declined both times

SerendipityJane · 01/02/2025 10:12

So easy !

Not that difficult with (eg) Monzo or other challenger banks.

Absolutely not a solution today though if all your eggs are in Barclay's basket.

Ah.

FrannyScraps · 01/02/2025 10:33

Knock on effect too, I'm not even a barclays customer but I haven't been paid by clients who use Barclays so I won't have their invoices cleared until Monday now.

itispersonal · 01/02/2025 10:34

This happened with Nat west / rbs years back when I worked there and also banked with them. No help for the now, unless banks are offering encashments - allowing you obtain cash through a branch (but not many are now open) but it is always worthwhile having a credit card/ account with another bank to help in these situations. As although they are rare, they are massively inconvenient

So you haven't so much as a tin of beans in the cupboard or some fish fingers in the freezer? I get its inconvenient - I am with Barclays but if you're this screwed then that is poor planning too.

In future I suggest that people keep a reserve of £20 to £100 in cash in the house at all times for just such Bleak House type scenarios as described above 😁

StarCourt · 01/02/2025 10:47

@CharlotteStreetW1 tried that didn't work either

mitogoshigg · 01/02/2025 10:47

@Donemum

Perhaps keep a packet of 25p economy pasta and jar of pesto, pack of cheap cereal and a carton of long life milk in for these just in case scenarios. Try the olio app or your local community pantry for help today

Fabellini · 01/02/2025 10:48

@Adamante that’s a pretty nasty response to be honest. There are many people who don’t have the finances to keep a reserve of cash - they are managing payday to payday, and it’s no fault of theirs if they struggle when payday doesn’t happen as it should. The COL crisis might not have affected you too much, but many families are sadly now living in their “Bleak House”

StarCourt · 01/02/2025 10:49

@Adamante no need for that supercilious tone

If this is the case you need to google your local community foodbanks and try and access some food. And have others have said always have emergency cash in the house so you don't get into this precarious situation again.

bestcatlife · 01/02/2025 10:52

Bit annoyed at some of the opinions suggesting it's us that should be prepared for these scenarios when in actual fact it's the bank's responsibility to provide a service and be prepared for outages, there should be a back up system or something? So much for a cashless society 😄 looks like the UK will never get there.
Once this is over I'm tempted to move my money out of Barclays.. what a shitshow.

rach7979 · 01/02/2025 10:52

@Adamante some people are literally living pay packet to pay packet, and therefore desperately need the money. Not everyone has a store cupboard or freezer with food items in for an emergency.

Nottodaythankyou123 · 01/02/2025 10:57

Mine came in today, seems to be luck of the draw unfortunately 😬

Baneofmyexistence · 01/02/2025 10:57

It’s the banks that should have a back up plan, not people reliant on benefits going in this morning to buy food they need. Barclays response has been completely inadequate and they are insisting cards can be used which isn’t true. Lots of people don’t have spare money to keep a stash in their house 🙄
