Hi, has anyone with Barclays not received their child benefit today? Starting to panic!

Thank you x

I work for a firm of solicitors and our account is with Barclays. The conveyancing department were going spare yesterday trying to get completions through.

It was an absolute nightmare - our firm aren’t with Barclays but others obviously are, as are clients, so trying to get things completed was awful

@Adamante that’s a pretty nasty response to be honest. There are many people who don’t have the finances to keep a reserve of cash - they are managing payday to payday, and it’s no fault of theirs if they struggle when payday doesn’t happen as it should. The COL crisis might not have affected you too much, but many families are sadly now living in their “Bleak House”

It isn’t meant to be nasty. If you’re in a position whereby your three children haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon and that was only toast! and it’s now lunch time the next day then something is very amiss and it’s not just the bank going down. The Bleak House thing was a joke but ok 😁

Nearlyadoctor · 01/02/2025 11:07

My Barclays savings account has allowed me to move money to my current account this morning and I bought some cinema tickets online using my debit card last night. So obviously not everyone is affected.

Donemum · 01/02/2025 10:10

Yes barclays are having major problems. I have money "stuck" in my savings account which I can't move to my current account. Also due carers and child benefit this morning which isn't showing. I went to the atm and it spat my card out. I have 3 children who I havent been able to feed since last night. Used the last of the bread for toast for their tea. It's an absolute nightmare. My gas has ran out and my house is freezing. Electric won't be far behind. I'll be moving banks when this is sorted as I'm just absolutely scunnered.

Ok if you are on prepayment meters call your supplier and explain.
Any friend or family member who could give you cash until it clears?

Worst case call the food bank and tell them about your current situation.

Having money currently stuck in savings means you can for an emergency plan for the future when this remedies - box with pasta, sauce, long life milk etc and £ x

Adamante · 01/02/2025 10:43

So you haven't so much as a tin of beans in the cupboard or some fish fingers in the freezer? I get its inconvenient - I am with Barclays but if you're this screwed then that is poor planning too.

In future I suggest that people keep a reserve of £20 to £100 in cash in the house at all times for just such Bleak House type scenarios as described above 😁

No I don't have anything at all as was doing my big shop yesterday when I was unable to transfer from savings to current account I had to walk out of lidls and leave a full trolley load of shopping. It wasn't bad planning at all I had the money just wasn't able to access it.
My marriage broke down a month ago this was my first money owed since being a single mum so I haven't quite got myself on my feet. In an ideal world I'd love to have access to spare cash unfortunately right now that's just not possible but thank you for your comment making me feel even worse than I already do!!

I have currently 100 in my savings account which I am unable to access as barclays aren't letting transfers go through. I'm also waiting for child benefit and carers allowance this morning which still hasn't went in. Everyones circumstances are different. I had the money there to feed my children barclays wouldn't allow me to access it

Sorry to hear that, I’m a single mum too, my ex left me in almost £30k worth of debt which he refused to pay so I had to. No child support or regular contact with kids either. And I didn’t have a full time job at the time. I was pretty much destitute for years, so I get it. Fill up your freezer. Nothing seems so bad with a full freezer I promise ❤️

My ex beat the shit out of me on new years day and left me with nothing it's been a horrendous month and all I wanted to do was treat the kids after school. Hopefully will be sorted soon I've seen some ppl saying there able to transfer now so I'll just keep an eye out. Thank you

Doggymummar · 01/02/2025 11:19

I got money from the cash point this morning and bought online using PayPal so it's not everyone. I saw on x that they are covering any legitimate costs, so if dds bounce and things. We are all so reliant on technology these days it's a nightmare if cocks up.
Fingers crossed they will sort it soon. Pay day in Jan is probs the worst time when we are all living on crumbs.

What a nasty post..

Acc0untant · 01/02/2025 11:20

I don't mean this as an "I told you so" and I know it's not helpful right now but for anyone reading who is affected by the Barclays outage (and everyone else tbh, could be your bank next time) it would be hugely beneficial for you to open an account with another bank and keep £10/£20 in there just in case this happens in the future. It just means should the same happen again you've got enough money to access for things like bus fare, a small amount of petrol, bread/milk/eggs/noodles etc.

Again, not a holier than thou post so hoping this is taken in the genuine tone I was aiming for and that if it happens again my post has encouraged a few people to have that back up option. X

Yeah mine liked doing that too. These life ruining men have a lot to answer for. Good luck ❤️

StarCourt · 01/02/2025 11:22

@Donemum same here money in my Barclays savings but can't transfer it anywhere

onwardsup4 · 01/02/2025 11:23

I received my expected payment about an hour ago and some other transfers are coming in/out now so looks like something is happening

Darkeagle · 01/02/2025 11:43

I made an online payment this morning and transferred money across accounts.

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 01/02/2025 11:52

Unless you mean to fill it with water, how do you propose that people with no extra money do this?

This reminds me of an OP from ages ago who was baffled as to why poor people couldn't just grow all of their own food and supplement it with 'cupboard staples' - as though everybody in a high-rise flat has a garden, single parents have lots of spare time for growing food, seeds are free (and you won't need any food whilst you're waiting for them to grow), and all of those cupboard staples magically arrive there without you ever having to pay for them.

Some people also say this about folk who can't afford to save for a pension - "Ah, but you can't afford not to save, as what will you live on in old age?" When people are living hand to mouth right now.

mitogoshigg · 01/02/2025 10:47

@Donemum

Perhaps keep a packet of 25p economy pasta and jar of pesto, pack of cheap cereal and a carton of long life milk in for these just in case scenarios. Try the olio app or your local community pantry for help today

This

I used to be like Old Mother Hubbard some months, having to borrow money to top up the shopping, but I always make sure now there is at least

Bread
Butter
Baked Beans
Soup
Tea Bags
Milk

It would be a few boring, small meals maybe but its something ,

Easy to say to keep an extra bit of money aside but not everybody is able to do so.
I agree re keeping some basics in at least, in case of emergency.

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 01/02/2025 12:19

I agree with PP that this is just one more reason why we shouldn't be so hasty to get rid of cash - or for people to scoff at those of us who want to keep it.

The modern essential systems work perfectly... until they don't.

HornyHornersPinger · 01/02/2025 12:28

My Child Benefit that was due at midnight has finally landed in my account but still no sign of the maintenance transfer from XP.

MaloryJones · 01/02/2025 12:30

Just read your update OP

No wonder you are all over the place
I am glad you got You and your Children away from the Monster.

Hope its sorted soon (Today) for You and others in a Barclays situation

Grumpyoldthing · 01/02/2025 12:30

They are still having problems, they did yesterday and today, I have just received a message to say they still have problems.

im finding I can pay for things ok , but can’t withdraw cash or move money about into savings. Sometimes .

it will sort itself out hopefully soon .

I have been with them 20 years and I think this is the second worst case of issues they have had - they once had everything go down for about 8 hours, and I ended up stuck at a train station in a complete panic.

since then I try my best to always have an emergency £10 note pushed down the side of my bra when I go out- the thinking behind it is even if my handbag got pinched/ phone dead/ cards not working- I would still have something

also it always seems to happen around paydays - so it must be something to do with increased usage.

absolute pain in the arse

it also shows how much we completely rely on technology

it doesn’t help you much - but I remember emailing and complaining last time and they sent a bunch of flowers 💐

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/02/2025 12:45

I just managed to transfer money from barclays to another bank and it appeared immediately so it is starting to get fixed.

HornyHornersPinger · 01/02/2025 14:00

My child benefit and maintenance transfer are both in now - check your banks and good luck x
