how to access cash when I lost my bank cards?

I stupidly lost my bank cards yest evening. I called my bank who blocked them. I have no cash at home, bank was only open until noon today and I couldn't make it to the branch. and I won't be able to get to town before Tuesday. I have a tenner and 2 DC. No family and friends I could ask for cash.

Worse case, we just stay at home and eat what's in the fridge and netflix etc, and cancel plans for tomorrow and Monday (we won't starve and survive) but I wondered if there is any way to get my hands on some money in the meantime. Probably not but sometimes, MN has some great ideas.

My bank (NW) have a facility where they can send a passcode to access money without a card.

Thanks @Boomer55

where would you access this money esp over the weekend when the branches are closed? are you with NatWest or Nationwide? I have the latter.

I'm guessing you don't have Apple Pay or linked to your phone? We are with nationwide, my daughter lost hers (again) and the only option was in branch.

dementedpixie · 19/10/2024 17:06

Do you have Google pay or apple pay on your phone so you can buy stuff using that?

Don't think nationwide offers emergency cash from an ATM

WinterBerry7 · 19/10/2024 17:08

Apple/Google pay won’t work if the cards are stopped.
which bank is it? I bank with first direct and when I lost my card they offered to transfer money to someone else’s account to take out for me.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 19/10/2024 17:12

Open a Revolut bank account and transfer say £100 in. Then add that to Apple Pay?

lostmycards · 19/10/2024 17:12

I don't have google nor apple pay. I just use my cards. I am with nationwide. Branches are closed until Monday and cannot get to a branch till Tuesday.

I think you confirmed what I thought. Will just have to survive a few days without any access to money. Luckily we have enough food at home. But had plans for tomorrow. Will just cancel. Not the end of the world!

That's too complicated for me 😳 I will just wait till Tuesday and visit the branch.

Ask someone if you can transfer them the money and they give you the cash?

Have you seen how many people get scammed on Revolut? It didn't actually hold full bank status either.,
Chase/ Starling are safer.

dementedpixie · 19/10/2024 17:15

Maybe set it up on your phone once you get your new card as Nationwide says they update the details on Google pay, etc once they order a new card before you even receive it.

Report your card as lost or stolen

You can report your card as lost or stolen in our Banking app or by giving us a call. We'll cancel it and post a new one to you. Your card can't be used to make card payments when it's cancelled. But Google Pay will continue to work. If you turned the gambling block on before reporting your card the block will still apply. Gambling payments using Google Pay will still be blocked.
Once your new card is ready, we'll automatically update the card details in Google Pay for you.

Do you have neighbours?? Or a friend who lives nearby

Oh no - my manager uses it and likes it. I’m more of a Monzo person but I think you may have to get a physical card to use it.

I cannot set up new payees without my card in my banking app. I need to stick it in a card reader and get a code to set it up.

no, no friends. family abroad. They could do a bank transfer but same thing, I couldn't access it without card. I will just wait.

I will draw some money when I have my cards back and leave it at home in a safe place so I am not ending up in the same pickle again. Lesson learnt!

One thought. Have the kids got any birthday/christmas money stashed anywhere?? Just in case you have and forgot - you could replace it when you get access.

AdoraBell · 19/10/2024 17:22

Good idea to get a small cash stash when your replacement card arrives. As you have enough food in it’s a relief, can you rearrange your plans.

LIZS · 19/10/2024 17:32

No friend or family you could transfer to and they reimburse in cash? Borrow dc pocket money?

If you are with NW you should be able to set up a new payee and transfer small amounts by just putting in your passcode again probably won’t need your card

Judellie · 19/10/2024 17:56

Not cash but if you have the Asda app, there may be some vouchers on there? Or do you have any Tesco clubcard vouchers?

I have a nectar card but sorted for groceries. I will just leave it and write it off as a learning opportunity: keep some emergency cash at home.

Rimtimtagidimdim · 19/10/2024 18:10

NatWest let you get cash from either a NatWest or Tesco cashpoint using a code you get on the App - no card needed.

Rimtimtagidimdim · 19/10/2024 18:11

Sorry - just saw you said Nationwide rather than Natwest, so not much help.

DreamW3aver · 19/10/2024 18:14

While you're waiting open an account with a bank that isn't stuck in the 2000s like Nationwide with their ridiculous cards and little machines just to log in to your account. I want to close my account but the thought of having to navigate all the codes is putting me off

I agree. Nationwide is definitely stuck in the past!
