Have you flipped forward as far as you can (June/July) and checked for overspends there?

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 06/05/2025 18:13

I hadn't but now I look there is €2.40 ready to assign in June and the same in July (and €4.80 ready to assign in April). I have probably fucked it entirely now cos I have fiddled a lot. I will see what happens at the end of the month and if necessary do a fresh start.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 06/05/2025 18:20

OK sorted June and July. May is normal but still €2.40 ready to assign in April. If i assign it to anything I get Red minus ready to assign (-€2.40) in May.

Hitting enter doesn't seem to automatically register any more, or is it just me?

Rather than hitting enter to allocate funds and it automatically taking me to the next line, I'm having to click on the next box. Is a bit annoying....

Hello everyone! How’s it going?

I changed job again 🤣🤣 knowing that with YNAB I could afford to deal with the change in payment dates etc. I actually have a slightly better paid job with more attractive hours… I do 3 x 12 hour days and there is as much overtime as I want to pick up which is nice. First payday tomorrow but I’m on emergency tax 😢 but have enough to top up Augusts budget start on September and put some extra to one side to pay for meals and drinks etc when we are away at the end of this month 😊

feeling quite secure financially at the moment. We don’t have loads but enough to manage and also to splurge on gig tickets (Metallica next year 🤣🤣)

hope YNAB is still helping everyone!

IKnowAristotle · 17/06/2025 10:33

@WorthySloth I also have Metallica tickets.

I'm desperately trying to remind myself that I'm allowed to spend money on big ticket items. We've got a big holiday this year, after a decade of caravan holidays and spending so much at once has stressed me out.

WorthySloth · 17/06/2025 12:14

@IKnowAristotle it’s hard isn’t it! Mind you we are currently considering heading to Wembley to see linkin park next week as we can still get tickets… I’ve just done a lot of overtime and July and August are fully funded and September is mostly funded so I reckon we can afford it…

WorthySloth · 18/06/2025 20:23

Got linkin park tickets. Will pick up some overtime to boost my income 😊

Hi everyone, I'm totally new to ynab (or any kind of budgeting in general) and so glad to find this thread! I have watched several intro videos and read some guidance. I wanted to ask what I should do in this scenario:
I want to manage the family budget. Myself and DH each have a personal account. We then transfer a set amount into a joint account each month to cover mortgage, bills, groceries, etc. But if I'm low on cash on my account I'd use the joint one for example. Or if there was no money in it then DH would pay.
In my 'plan' do I input half of our monthly bills as that's my contribution? Or do I just put a 'joint account' target? Or do I put the fill amounts?
My DH won't keep up with tracking and logging his own account but he hardly spends any money anyway so I'm not worried about that. I'm just confused about how I manage the journey nt stuff.
Thanks!

In your shoes, I would link my own personal accounts and 100% of the joint accounts (50% would be tricky, as the balance would never reconcile).

User415373 · 25/06/2025 11:07

Thanks @Chatonette , so when I'm adding to my plan, do put £600 for mortgage for example (my 'half') or the total of £1200? I'm guessing the full amount?

Put the full amount.

Which bank do you use? Did you set up automatic import for transactions?

User415373 · 25/06/2025 12:08

@Chatonette mine is Lloyds and joint is Halifax. I've set them both to link so hopefully it'll start making more sense as I go through. I think it's because YNAB makes it look like I have more money than I do because it's showing the joint account balance as well. But I guess that shouldn't matter if I've set the plan up properly?

The full amounts (£1200 mortgage) will be coming out of the account, so it’s no extra money. And since you’ll have the £1200 assigned to come out with the mortgage (and other bills), you will have the correct amount sitting in Ready to Assign.

WorthySloth · 30/07/2025 11:05

It’s all gone quiet on here! How’s everyone doing?

my new job is going well I’m picking up overtime and so have managed to get a bit ahead which gives me a cushion. I’ve been on the wrong tax code so just sorted that this morning and am hoping to get my refund through next payday.

I bank with chase and recently got offered a credit card. No interest to pay on anything for either 12 or 18 months so I’ve started using it for everything then paying off in full on its due date to gain some interest on my money 😊 going ok so far as YNAB keeps me accountable.

this month I have splurged on Metallica tickets and a hotel for next year. Waiting for the weekend to get my Yungblud tickets. Nice to know I can afford to spend a bit.

keep tweaking my categories according to my spending. My fuel spend has gone up recently and groceries can be variable. I currently have just a shopping category thinking of changing that to groceries then a smaller one for other bits and pieces which would be general shopping. Does that sound sensible?

anyway good luck as we head into the next month 👍

HarpQuartet · 31/07/2025 08:03

Hi @WorthySloth , I had a quick flick back but couldn't see what your new job is, but anyway I'm glad it's going well. You sound very on top of things 🎉

I'm pretty content with how things are going - later today I'll look at how much is in my various categories and move some money from any "nice to haves" that are looking a bit too generously budgeted for (e.g. days out, rather than bills) into Ready to Assign and see how far ahead I can allocate for the essentials (car insurance, council tax etc).

Helps me feel secure.

BG2015 · 31/07/2025 08:10

I’m happy with my budget too. I’ve been doing it for over a year now and it’s definitely kept me on track.

Just retired and am starting a new part time job so I will need YNAB more than ever.

WorthySloth · 31/07/2025 09:17

@HarpQuartet I’m a support worker. I just moved from one setting to another. I do 36 hours a week but do them over 3 days so happy to pick up a bit of overtime here and there 😊 which helps with my gig habit 🤣🤣

WorthySloth · 31/07/2025 10:52

I’ve just had a bit of an audit of my categories and split another couple down… instead of having a personal category I’ve split it into nails and clothes. And instead of having a fun money category I’ve split it into tickets hotels and top up spends for when we go away. Will see how that goes

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 31/07/2025 13:02

Doing OK here. Had a slight pay rise and got the subsidy for the solar panels (only taken 3 years, Spanish bureaucracy is slooow) so that is a little bit extra and will cover DD´s school trip to the UK early next year. Have to front up for accomodation and flights in the autumn so it´s come at just the right time.
Had a car accident last autumn and got some compo, about 5000 euros. That plugged some holes and paid for our summer holiday.
Been applying for promotion and interviewed well for two positions but didn´t get them. Also been putting my name down for overtime, but no luck so far.
Basically I am earning more than I was when I was struggling as self-employed. You can YNAB all you like but if your outgoings aren´t covered by what you earn it´s always going to be the same outcome.
Having said that, I couldn´t manage without YNAB, it helps so much to know what you can actually afford. Especially for the mathematically challenged like me.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 01/08/2025 14:53

How can I add interest payments (me earning interest) to my ING account?
It´s my kind of side account where I save. But I can´t work out how to reflect in YNAB that I have earned interest in there. Can´t work out where to say the money is coming from or what category to use.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 01/08/2025 14:53

It´s not a massive deal because the interest is like a euro a month. :)

flipent · 01/08/2025 14:55

Is it a linked account? I've got a small amount of interest each month from an account linked to YNAB. It comes up each month as an inbound transaction and asks me where I would like to allocate it to.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 01/08/2025 18:21

No, not Linked. Do you think linking it would solve it?

flipent · 01/08/2025 18:39

Linking would automatically ask you to assign it somewhere. If it’s not linked, YNAB doesn’t know you have it
