Just a continuation of the previous one before it fills up!

Thanks all. I think I'm going to find credit cards the trickiest. We have one credit card that we use but about three different bank accounts that we pull from the pay that credit card (we pay it off every month). That makes it all rather complicated.

BG2015 · 29/05/2024 14:39

I got paid today and have assigned all my money. Was so eager to get it sorted.

I use a reward credit card to pay for food, petrol etc and pay it off every month. Not sure how to set that up yet.

QueenMabby · 29/05/2024 15:16

That's the bi I find tricky @BG2015. I think as you spend you have to log it as from the credit card and YNAB will then allocate it from the relevant category to the credit card section so you ha e enough in there to pay it off. I think!

It’s easy. Just add the account, and rather than listing it as checking/current, label it as a credit card, and set to the payoff plan to pay in full monthly. I use CCs for all of my spending, and found this support video helpful at the start. It’s easy once you get going, I promise. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bZlAj1utJFI

Once all three current accounts are set up on YNAB it's easy enough. You do a transfer from Current Acc A to credit card, current account B to credit card or current acc C to credit card.

Btw are you paying fees for all current accounts?

Happierwithouthim · 29/05/2024 23:41

YNAB has helped me today, had a scheduled transaction for my house insurance, reminded me to hunt out the renewal it's due on June 2nd, so I must pay that tomorrow!

BG2015 · 30/05/2024 07:22

I pay a £2 for my NatWest account- must remember to factor that in.

QueenMabby · 30/05/2024 08:23

@Happierwithouthim - no bank account fees. It's less the transferring of the money that's the problem and more the categorising. I keep categorising it wrong and it throws the budget categories out! Will watch the video upthread.

Happierwithouthim · 30/05/2024 09:15

You categorise when spending on cc, it doesn't matter where the payment comes from then, that's just a transfer

QueenMabby · 31/05/2024 10:28

We did our first reconciliation last night. It went pretty well with only one transaction causing issues. I couldn't get the credit card to match. Ended up being that dh had accidentally put the spend on our other "spending abroad" credit card that we don't use day to day and which isn't (yet) linked in YNAB. Once I'd backtracked that then it all worked.

I've been watching some YNAB videos on YouTube. All US. Are there any U.K. YNABbers that are on YouTube that anyone wants to recommend?

BG2015 · 31/05/2024 12:22

@QueenMabby I'd like some U.K. YouTubers to look at too.

I'm well into the YNab way again now. It is such a brilliant tool.

Fullofthejoysofspring · 01/06/2024 10:01

Morning all, can I ask for some help please? I've got a credit card that I'm trying to pay off. I'm not spending on it at all, but making a monthly payment to pay down the balance. I set the credit card up as a loan account, and linked the category that I'm using to make the payments, but the loan account is not recognising the amounts paid.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Happierwithouthim · 01/06/2024 11:06

Are you doing a transfer each time you make a payment to the loan account?

Fullofthejoysofspring · 01/06/2024 11:57

Do you mean the payment from account 1 to the credit card?

Fullofthejoysofspring · 01/06/2024 11:57

I've checked and it's categorised as a debt repayment to the credit card loan account, the categories are linked etc

BG2015 · 01/06/2024 13:59

I thought that because my debit card + account was linked to YNAB it would pick up transactions from Sainsburys, Costa etc but it doesn't seem to.

I'm wary of doing it manually incase it does it again next week when everything catches up.

Happierwithouthim · 01/06/2024 15:29

I haven't managed to get mine linked even though it's showing up an option.

I categorised my spending as miscellaneous, then each week I budgeted to miscellaneous category & then that in turn funded my credit card payment & then I clicked record payment when the full amount was in my credit card category
. Does that make sense?

Argh! I moved money from one account to another and it's transferred fine but it's also put it in as ready to assign. But it's already assigned so now I've got duplicate money! I have no idea how to reverse it. Even deleting the transactions doesn't work.

Happierwithouthim · 03/06/2024 07:25

Screenshot it here

QueenMabby · 03/06/2024 12:09

I fixed it! It had randomly duplicated it into a different account as an income. Once I deleted it that was ok. Phew! I'm sure there'll be loads of niggles until I get the hang of it.

My money is now 10 days old. 🤗

Happierwithouthim · 03/06/2024 15:45

Excellent it's a learning curve

BG2015 · 04/06/2024 19:34

I've got myself a bit confused I think. I was paid on 29th May and allocated all my bills and expenses, with my bills coming out on the 1st June.

What does it mean when everything turns yellow? So I've spent £25 of my £100 grocery budget but the £75 is yellow?

QueenMabby · 04/06/2024 21:32

It depends when your category has the "I need £x by Y date" set as. If you've set it to be the end of the month then filling it on the 1st and then spending on the category would trigger YNAB to tell you that you need to refill by the end of the month.

We had this and had to change the target date to the 1st. Then you've met the target and can spend without the dreaded colour change.

HouseofHolbein · 13/06/2024 08:24

How's it going everyone? Payday for me tomorrow 😊 so July will be fully funded and I am giving myself some extra spends to celebrate my youngest finishing school 😁

I need to make a new category for that 🤣🤣

I'm 2 weeks from pay day - but where I used to always be anxious as this point and never certain of what bills were still due (real head in the sand approach) I know everything is covered.

I used to do a calculation of available cash divided by the number of days left until pay day. Did it today, just out of interest and it is double what it used to be!

It's all allocated, but shows what a bad job I was doing before!

I've only been using YNAB since January.... I only wish I'd found it sooner!
