PREMIUM BONDS - MAY 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 10:23

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs in April 2024 - so 1994 since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

@bigdecisionstomake welcome. Glad enjoy thread as I do and the excitement of what if .......

I'm se. Do you mean you out your tax away in pb for the 9mths then pay it in jan

Or meant on give better tax /pension options

@Blondeshavemorefun I put away a set amount each month from my business account into a savings account to cover my tax and NI payments that fall due in January and July. When I saw a PP say they put theirs into premium bonds I went to check the account I use and it's only paying 2.75% interest (I'm a bit lazy and I've been using the same account for years and should have shopped around to find one paying more interest).

One option would be to open an account paying better interest but I'm tempted to try putting these funds into PBs each month for a while to see if I can beat the 2.75% I'm currently earning. I would obviously have to be organised about pulling the funds out in time for the tax and NI payments when they are due as at the moment the account is with my regular bank and pretty much instant access to pay HMRC.

I bought £11,000 back in April and this will be the first month I will qualify. Im giving them a year and if nothing happens I’ll probably put them in an ISA next year. I will see as its all new to me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/05/2024 11:16

Gotcha @bigdecisionstomake

Makes more sense in pb as May win big !!

@EachandEveryone I understand why you want to move but I'm
Staying put

This is what happened to me a few months back

They kept asking for answer of my security questions when I couldn't log in

They asked think 4 and I knew all were correct and they kept saying one was wrong

Drove me nuts !!

Had to change my password that I had had for years and do a new 6 figure pin

Which course I now don't remember 🙀🙄

👋 thanks @Blondeshavemorefun

Still got a few months of my dealing dads PB to go (he was adamant he wanted them in for the year after new died) and so far has won £2.5k on FH!

Im debating putting some of my redundancy money into PBs come end of May!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/05/2024 21:21

Sorry about your dad @JollyHostess101

Can you take them out after a year then reinvest

Or do you need the money as such

We were going to reinvest his FH but I’ve now taken redundancy while on May leave so was going to squirrel my VR away but part of me wants to keep dads bonds as bonds out of sentimental reasons so I’m having a think!!

recklessgran · 10/05/2024 07:29

Just wanted to let you all know that DH has received his £10k into his bank account. We thought he'd need to fill in a form for such a big prize but we waited in vain for said form, DH feeling anxious about that and then bingo the money appeared in his bank account. I wonder if that's because he has FH? Perhaps the form is to find out whether or not you want reinvestment in the event that you don't have FH?

CaveMum · 10/05/2024 10:58

@recklessgran how exciting! Hope you can be a bit frivolous this weekend!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/05/2024 12:35

That's lovely to know. Enjoy it @recklessgran

Wrapunzel · 10/05/2024 19:31

Eek how lovely!

recklessgran · 11/05/2024 09:23

Thanks everyone! For now he's left it in his current account whilst we have a think about what would be the best use of it. Still a bit shocked to be honest.

happinessischocolate · 11/05/2024 09:36

For anyone who might have old lost PB I completed the lost account details as per the NS&I website last weekend and have received a letter today asking for proof of ID so that was quick.

You should look at a chip instant access account while you figure it out as the interest at the moment is 4.84%

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/05/2024 16:32

I love my Chip Account

Rhumba · 14/05/2024 17:04

Still 3 weeks to go! Not fair!

curiositykilledthiscat · 14/05/2024 19:58

Another Chip fan here - it’s so easy to use and I like seeing the interest add up daily. If your DH deposits that £10K prize into the Chip 4.84 % interest savings account @recklessgran, the interest after one month would be £40.33.

So if a full pb moves all to it, they would get £200 interest a month

Yes but how much would the tax be I wonder

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/05/2024 20:11

Oh yes. Good point ref tax

OP posts:
EachandEveryone · 14/05/2024 20:12

I don’t suppose there is anyway of getting around that unless you just took it out of the pot bit by bit

RookieMa · 15/05/2024 21:40

DD and I will be in out first ever OB draw in June so we'll be in competition to see who wins the most

Set up on the back of April's thread
