PREMIUM BONDS - MAY 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 10:23

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs in April 2024 - so 1994 since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

Congratulations @swissrollisntswiss
An amazing win 🥇😀
Gives us all hope!

Cowhen · 03/05/2024 22:36

Thanks for all of the info at the beginning, @Blondeshavemorefun . People don't seem to read it before asking questions, but you tried. 🤷‍♀️🙂

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/05/2024 13:46

Very weird @Devilshands that someone with £50k doesn't wjn monthly

The law of odds is 28 prizes so 2 a month

Well, I’m certainly not winning my fair share with full holdings, twice in the last six months with no wins at all and most other months I only get one prize.

I must be getting a big win soon to make up for the lean months!

Aramiss · 03/05/2024 23:09

Won 400quid this month on FH.

Tulipvase · 03/05/2024 23:11

My son won 100 pounds this month and he only had 325 pounds held since December! Feeling very lucky!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 03/05/2024 23:12

Just wow @swissrollisntswiss 🎉🎉🎉

I’m currently trying to cash in my nephew’s cildren’s bond my parents bought for him in 2003. He’s overseas. What a bloody palaver. Did it for my other nephew a couple of years ago but this time is proving much harder.

’Wet’ signatures are required so I brought back all the necessary paperwork last time I visited, posted off, but heard nothing. Phoning is a nightmare but I persevered. They couldn’t really tell me anything except that something wasn’t quite correct so they’d written to him. Despite me telling them there is no postal service where he lives. The new forms have just arrived with me. This could take months.

leafybrew · 04/05/2024 07:31

@swissrollisntswiss Super!! Many congratulations !

This month I've won £100 (on 20k) and DH has won £100 (on less than £10k)

ukku · 04/05/2024 07:36

£275 on full holding. This is the most I've won.

Karatema · 04/05/2024 07:54

Congratulations. I am very jealous 🤣🤣 @swissrollisntswiss

Hatecleaninglovecleanhouse · 04/05/2024 08:15

£100 on £30k holding. Get something most months, often £25, biggest month £250 total on 3 bonds.

I looked at the winners list for the first time last night. Interesting - a lot of the bigger winners are really lucky. It tells you how much they've purchased and how much they currently hold, often a big difference so they've won a lot.

InMySpareTime · 04/05/2024 08:25

@Hatecleaninglovecleanhouse they didn't -usually- necessarily win the difference between the block and the total holding, a lot of people buy bonds in small chunks regularly rather than all at once.
Eg my total holding is £8k but it's all in blocks of a few hundred.

GoogleWhacking · 04/05/2024 08:47

£25 for my donor (I have LPA, so manage her account) on £15k.

Zero as ever for me and DH on under £1k of holdings. We have never won in 5 years!!

premimumbonds · 04/05/2024 09:27

I bought premium bonds about 30 years ago, and then forgot about them - until this thread. I am not sure what address was linked, or bank account. Can I find out the numbers and if I have won anything?

Livinghappy · 04/05/2024 09:52

@swissrollisntswiss congratulations. Let us know how the process is for you.

I saw this month that larger wins have to be claimed. Let's hope it's not too challenging!

daisychain01 · 04/05/2024 11:09

Me: £25+£50+£100 FH
DH: £50+£100 on probably £20K [Im going to find his logon details so we can check his holdings, I keep passing my winnings to his account so it has been gradually building up!)

FiveShelties · 04/05/2024 11:50

@swissrollisntswiss wow what a fantastic result, congratulations 😁

ajandjjmum · 04/05/2024 15:03

Brilliant @swissrollisntswiss - gives us all hope for future draws!

EverhopefulPB · 04/05/2024 16:19

Swiss roll, perhaps your dh needs to be away on pb day more often! Amazing win, any ideas what you will do with it?

Zilch for me.
I've won 300 ish over 3 or 4 years on 7 grand down to 5..

ButterflyKu · 04/05/2024 20:43

Thanks for the new thread.

I’m only going to keep my bonds until August or so and then I’ll move everything into a savings account. Let’s see what happens until then😆

bigdecisionstomake · 05/05/2024 09:46

Thanks for keeping this thread going @Blondeshavemorefun it adds a little excitement to my life each month 😂

I'm self employed and a PP mentioned that they put their set aside tax funds in premium bonds each month which is genius and I'm going to start doing that to see if I can beat the interest rate I'm currently getting on them which is only 2.75% I've just realised.

No win for me this month although I only have just under 8k currently and have had two wins already this year so not doing too badly.

Edited as pressed Post too soon...

elliejjtiny · 05/05/2024 11:16

£50 this month on £5k of premium bonds. Not sure about my yearly average but I've won £450 in total since 2021.

greasypolemonkeyman · 05/05/2024 11:30

Just thought is share my win, my very first one!

My DH and I have £1150 in premium bonds and have had since November. We won £100 this draw and it's been reinvested. It's got us excited to build up our premium bonds after not adding anything for the last 2 months.

I can't even begin to describe the images running through my head when I saw this email and I have to say my thoughts were rampant with what I'd spend it all on because OBVIOUSLY it was £100k minimum 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/05/2024 13:48

@elliejjtiny and @greasypolemonkeyman again goes to show low holdings like yours and mine can and do wjn
