PREMIUM BONDS - MAY 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 10:23

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs in April 2024 - so 1994 since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

I've just checked our rate of return on our PBs. Since we invested them in September 2023 (first eligible draw in November) the return has been 2.2%. We worked out that we need to average about 3% to match current savings rates, less tax payable. So not great, but getting there.

fussychica · 02/05/2024 17:52

Nothing again for the 6th month in a row🙁

Eaumyword · 02/05/2024 17:53

Thanks for the new thread @Blondeshavemorefun

chaticat · 02/05/2024 17:55

I did quite well I have £14K and won £150. I have only not won a little prize one month out of the last 6

jackstini · 02/05/2024 18:18

£550 between us this month, both on FH ☺️

Wiaa · 02/05/2024 18:39

£275 for me only £50 for dh both on fh

Starseeking · 02/05/2024 18:42

Sounds like I need to put a few thousand in to win prizes on a more regular basis.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 18:53

Obv the more you have the more chances you have

But the list and me and others who have small holdings do win

Equally there are those on £50k who don't win monthly or win £25 and wobble about moving funds to high interest account

FH In for 4 months. First month £250, then £100, then £50, then £25. Hazard a guess next month will be £0. Not as exciting as I’d hoped

CissOff · 02/05/2024 19:39

I’ve had £450 on £20k over the past 6 months but nothing for the past 2.

Just upped to FH so hoping for more wins. Anything won will go in the pot for a Big Holiday next year (which will cost about £40k for the whole family) so praying for a couple of decent wins.

Bimblesalong · 02/05/2024 19:48

My car is completely broken and I have to buy another one - the kick in the pants is that the broken car needs paid for work to be drivable for some sort of trade-in. Counting down in hope of a better win next month!

BondPremiumBond · 02/05/2024 20:28

Thanks for the new thread @Blondeshavemorefun

1 x £50 win for me this month on 7.5k, thank you ERNIE, every little helps 😁

Congratulations to all this months winners, both small and big amounts 🍾

SmallFY · 02/05/2024 20:44

Wooo! £150 for me this month!

DaydreamerBetty · 02/05/2024 20:49

DD1 won £25 too on approx 3k and won £50 in march. She won £300 last year and generally does well on a small amount.
DD2 hasn’t won anything on 1.4k
DD1 works so adds her own money hence why she has more in bonds.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/05/2024 20:58

£125 this month for us.

mrsdolittle · 02/05/2024 21:08

£250 on FH for me this month

Pozz · 02/05/2024 21:46

I wonder how many numbers there are in every draw.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 23:13

If you know your holders number you can also check via this link

Or 'whispers' if you know your dh/dw/child's holder number etx

£25 on £25 k
£0 on 5k for us

Pozz · 03/05/2024 07:15

Blimey! 😬 @Blondeshavemorefun

Vettrianofan · 03/05/2024 07:19

None of us won this month. Got to get eldest DC to set up his own details with NS&I since he turned 16 last year or he cannot access the money. What a faff!

Wish this was more clear how much of a faff it is once DC turn 16. I never thought of that when setting up all their accounts 🤔

swissrollisntswiss · 03/05/2024 07:41

DH and I both have the full investment and always check the app together over breakfast. We usually get around £300 between us per month. DH is working away this week so I did it alone, I won £50k! Still in total shock. DC didn’t get my excitement (too young!). Actually came on here to see how the claim form works, we live abroad and they have my parents address so I need to work that out
