PREMIUM BONDS - MAY 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 10:23

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs in April 2024 - so 1994 since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

@GOTBrienne that's amazing for you! So happy for you!

I was very excited when I checked the app in the middle of the night because I won FOUR prizes totalling £300 this month. So pleased. I only have around £8000 in there so I’m used to no wins, just the occasional one.

confusedlots · 04/06/2024 17:13

SingaporeSlinky · 04/06/2024 16:24

100 for me on 6k

I’ve just put a bit into starter funds for the kids - how do others handle wins? Say one child wins 1000 and the other wins nothing, is it just the way it goes, or would you even them up once they get signed over to them at 16?

Yes I top them up so they always stay roughly equal. Wouldn't be able to do that if it was a bigger win for one of them though, but in that case I guess I'd split the winnings out. I'm not planning on giving them access to all the money when they reach that age though. I will withdraw the money just before that and keep it safe for them, and then give them certain amounts once we've decided what it's going to be used for e.g. university, house deposit, driving lessons

TubeScreamer · 04/06/2024 17:26

£25 on FH

FFS
i never have the big wins that others on here have. Always £25 or zero

Spaceracers · 04/06/2024 17:33

@SingaporeSlinky i was worried about one of my DC winning high amount and the legal implications of me dividing it with the other DC (or whether this would cause arguments later in life) - always hopeful to win big!

I hadn't saved a lot in the DCs name so withdrew and added it to my PBs (I wasn't on FH) and now give them the equivalent percentage of each win.

eg. 5k of 50k allocated to DC, this month 'I' won £100, so DC will get £10 in their savings accounts.

I think it works out well as they hadn't won anything on their small holdings prior to combining our holdings!

I need to find somewhere else to regularly save for them though.. without them having access!

WimbyAce · 04/06/2024 18:03

Had my best win yet with £500, really pleased 😁

So, I posted yesterday that I thought I saw myself on the big list, right amount, time, area. But the number for the bond was wrong, so close. Anyway I couldn’t sleep as I was desperate to check and….I had a look in the dark…

it was me. I won £50k.

It says they will send a form out to have it paid. No idea what we will do. I haven’t been able to work for the last decade as I am a carer, so it probably becomes my pension money. But I haven’t slept!
Can’t believe I found out from the app!

That's amazing! Congratulations!

App13 · 04/06/2024 18:12

225 pounds on 25k

RoseBliss · 04/06/2024 18:16

Wow! Congratulations GOT!

Only £50 for me on FH.
DH got £425 on FH.

Cowhen · 04/06/2024 00:14

Nothing here, but I'm only on 6k.

I take it back! I checked last night (signed in on the website around ten after midnight) and it was showing nothing. Checked again this afternoon (don't know why) and have won £50. A nice surprise. I'm on 6k.

Congrats to @GOTBrienne !

SwedishEdith · 04/06/2024 18:39

Congratulations @GOTBrienne . There does seem to be at least one decent chunky win on these threads each month just need it to be me next time.

EverhopefulPB · 04/06/2024 18:51

@GOTBrienne

Wow. Your the reason we keep on keeping on, dreaming 😍😍.

WeAreBorg · 04/06/2024 19:04

Wow congratulations @GOTBrienne !!!

ButterflyKu · 04/06/2024 19:12

This is my last month on PB, gonna have to move it to my savings account for the interest. Good luck to you all!🫡

Fairyliz · 04/06/2024 19:14

I’ve just checked and won £100 on just over 12k.
Looked at my winnings over the last 12 months and I have a return of 5.09%, so pretty pleased with that.

Daffyyellow · 04/06/2024 19:22

Checked the blue app at 10 last night, 2x£100 (already posted on the thread).
Checked the cream app in the early hours to find another £25 - more proof that the navy app uploads bigger prizes first.

Byronada · 04/06/2024 19:30

It's so interesting to read this thread. I'm so pleased for people who have won. It's a game of chance. I've got FH but have never won more than £250 and most months won nothing 🤣

Livinghappy · 04/06/2024 19:34

@GOTBrienne delighted for you, lovely news. Congratulations

£25 for me on FH...was disappointed initially but accepting now. One thing I've noticed is that when I was adding money I seemed to win more. I know it doesn't work like that but it seems like it.

I'm planning on using the money later this year so will have a few more cycles and then might just keep a token amount in.

yorkieswithgravy · 04/06/2024 19:58

Nothing for either account this month but since we withdrew everything down to 1k ish to move house I wasn't surprised. Sad my days of FH are over but knew it was coming!

nettie434 · 05/06/2024 01:12

Congratulations @GOTBrienne. It's wonderful news for you. Hope it makes life easier!

I think we've cracked it! Interesting to see how the bigger wins started appearing

That's amazing @GOTBrienne! Congratulations.

gettingolderbutcooler · 05/06/2024 09:00

Over £500 this month! On both almost full holdings though.

TheFlis · 05/06/2024 10:13

Congratulations @GOTBrienne I’m
so happy for you!

I won £100 on 4.5k holdings, it’s my biggest win so far so very chuffed!

Aquarius1234 · 05/06/2024 10:23

I don't get having to fill in a claim form for large prizes.
Why can't it be put into your bank account like other amounts.
