PREMIUM BONDS - MAY 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 10:23

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs in April 2024 - so 1994 since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

Not sure if someone has already posted this. I don't have m+ so no sure what the magic number is

£38,779 apparently. Here's an archive version of the full page: archive.ph/LcXuK

Nothing again for the third month running sadly.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/06/2024 18:27

I won 5 prizes totalling £350 and DH won two prizes totalling £150. So £500 for this household. Pleased with that.

BeccaBean · 05/06/2024 18:35

£125 on FH for me. My overall return for the last year has been around 5% so pretty happy.

Congrats @GOTBrienne . Just brilliant!!!!

Countrylife2002 · 05/06/2024 19:20

I’m interested to know if people think you get a higher percentage return the higher amount you hold? Is there a rough number where it becomes a good investment for most. Or for most is it always a bad investment. I’m in it for the unlikely chance it could change my life, so I don’t particularly mind a low return, but just wondering if there is a difference in percentage return between low holdings and high holdings , anecdotally on this thread of course !

InMySpareTime · 05/06/2024 19:29

Percentage return is on average the same whatever the size of holding, but the lower the holding the more "lumpy" the returns, and the higher the holding the closer it will track to the advertised average rate return.

Ohfuckrucksack · 05/06/2024 20:17

0 again

Each year I seem to run at less than half the average prize win for the holding amount.

I've got to get lucky at some point - right?

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/06/2024 20:43

Some do have more luck (me) then others

Some have worse luck like if have £50k and keep. Or winning

Averagely yes £50k should win every month a few prizes

I read somewhere that the tipping point is supposed to be 30k + - so expected to win something most months. A £25 win every single month for a year on 30k would only be 1% return so sounds about right?

Even though the odds for each bond are identical, the fact is that most individual bonds win nothing, so that's why it seems a better return by having a larger holding - Someone holding say 5k or 10k might go the whole year winning nothing at all, but then all that has to happen is one lucky bond winning big to change that!

Countrylife2002 · 05/06/2024 21:14

Yeah I guess the way it works is to spread it over a longer time period .

I’m saving into it so I don’t touch it, while keeping it easy access, so although I’d like the return I’d get from savings it would be too easy to dip into. Not that I have much as yet.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/06/2024 11:49

I add my tax money into it as in self employed Through out the year but the gets raided in jan each year so I'm back to being very low

But I have done every well so not moaning didn't win this month

£300 on £44k this month.

JollyHostess101 · 07/06/2024 19:13

So I took delivery of two rather bulging envelopes from NS & I today now they’ve processed the grant of probate for my Dad….. 20 prize warrants for what he’s won from September when he died!

Now to figure out how long it’ll take me to pay them in via the banking app as there’s neither a Lloyds nor Barclays open anymore where we’ve moved to!!

No banks in my local town but I pay money in via post office which mainly are in Mcolls

They don't seem to accept nationwide but any other bank account just put cars in machine and pay over the cheques

This is interesting. My mum died in October and I've just sent the letter with the grant of probate to NS&I. I was under the impression the bond investment ended at death, but I wasn't entirely sure. She had a full holding so I'm sure there would have been a few wins if the bonds were still active. We'll see.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss too!

You can keep them in for 12 months after death- my Dad was very adamant he wanted me to leave them in!! He had FH as well!!

NS & I are super helpful- did your mum have the prize tracker on her phone? As I’ve been keeping an eye on that on draw day! If not they send you a letter with how many wins there’s been and how much!

Feedbackloop · 08/06/2024 08:15

This is exactly the question I’d like answered.
DF passed away last summer, I sent the probate and claim form away and a few days ago the original invested amount appeared in the probate account.
Should I now expect any winnings to be posted? It was usual that he’s get the odd £25 or £50.

Anyone know how long it takes for them to post out any winnings once the original amount has been returned?

I got mine within 3 days of them returning the probate form but Dads bonds are still live until September when they’ll just transfer his bonds into my bank account so it might be different!!

if you call them and ask for the bereavement team they’re super helpful!!

I have had 50k in PB since December 2023. In 3 of the months since then I have won 5 prizes , totalling £750. The thought that I'm not being taxed on the winnings is very satisfying.🙂

My winnings this year now total £950 as I won £100 x 2 this month. 🙂

I don't think she had it, but I cut her phone off and gave it away months ago anyway.

I guess it'll just be a surprise.

I've tried it (on the website) just now, and everything seems normal.
