PREMIUM BONDS - MAY 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 10:23

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs in April 2024 - so 1994 since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

Woohoo @GOTBrienne What a wonderful thing to see, especially when you thought you'd won it and then hadn't 🎉

Dh won 3x £50 and 1 x £100 on FH
I won £25 on £10k

The gods really didn't listen to my pleas about really needing to win this month as the most perfect house has come up for sale 😢

ButterflyKu · 04/06/2024 11:30

OMG @GOTBrienne amazing!!!!

elkiedee · 04/06/2024 11:34

Nothing for me or DP on our very small holdings this month or the last two - I had £180 in the draw and DP just has £25. Will have £225 in there for next month's draw. I really don't expect to win on such small holdings, but I'm keeping most of my money in cash ISAs and other cash savings for now.

MoneyMagnet · 04/06/2024 11:34

Many congratulations to @GOTBrienne - that is a fantastic win - no wonder you couldn't sleep.

BrassicaBabe · 04/06/2024 12:09

@GOTBrienne fecking yeah!!!!! So pleased for a random internet stranger 🤣😘

platypusweek · 04/06/2024 12:11

Oh my goodness @GOTBrienne that's incredible!

It's my third month with premium bonds but first that I haven't won anything. Still, I've done pretty well on average (£350 on 20,000 in 3 months) so I'm still happy.

It is just wonderful to hear about the life changing wins. Roll on July!

waryandbored · 04/06/2024 12:16

@GOTBrienne wow! It’s so exciting hearing from someone who won a big prize! Congratulations, I hope it brings you some happiness

MercyChant66 · 04/06/2024 12:34

Seems to be a lot of bigger wins and people with months of good luck even on smaller holdings! And many congrats to our biggest winner! In answer to the question on the odds of winning nothing on FH, I am testament to the fact that it can be a very frequent occurrence for some, peppered with the odd £25 like this month! I really should cash the lot in but (dwindling) hope keeps me in the game…

OutOfTheHouse · 04/06/2024 12:34

How many bonds did you have @GOTBrienne?

GOTBrienne · 04/06/2024 12:41

We’re on FH. It was from the sale of DHs parents home that is set aside to move when DH retires, so PB was the best place to hold it then.
so probably should spend some of it on something frivolous as it’s extra.

FiveShelties · 04/06/2024 12:42

@GOTBrienne huge congratulations. What a fantastic surprise for you😁

Igmum · 04/06/2024 12:43

Wow @GOTBrienne that's so brilliant! Congratulations 🥂

Linearforeignbody · 04/06/2024 13:03

£200 on FH . Return is about 3.5% for the year

ImPunbelievable · 04/06/2024 13:05

GoodlifeGlow · 04/06/2024 09:44

If anyone is interested in long term returns on the PB we have 3x FH invested for the last year.

Our overall return was 3.6%, but actual return was 4.5%, 4.1% and 2.2%

Average monthly payout to the family was £445, on each holding it averaged at £205, £170 and £90.

Biggest win on one holding was £1100.

It’s a below average return but tax free so for us it makes sense and we enjoy checking the results each month.

You've done well! I've had a year of nearly full holdings and only had just over £1000 in winnings, so about 2% 😢

Gooseysgirl · 04/06/2024 13:07

@GOTBrienne that is amazing news!!!! Warmest congrats 😊🍾

We got £25 on around £7k current holdings... I think we'll be pretty much fully out of bonds by the next draw as home improvements bills have to be paid 😭 Anyway it was fun while it lasted... £250 total winnings in the past few months - wouldn't have earned that if they money had been in a savings account so it was worth the gamble 😄

Petal7 · 04/06/2024 13:18

Amazing news @GOTBrienne !! That's wonderful!

I got £50 on nearly FH - my lowest amount for the past few months.

Happiestathome · 04/06/2024 13:28

Congratulations @GOTBrienne 🥳
What a fantastic win! 🥂

DaydreamerBetty · 04/06/2024 13:29

Congratulations @GOTBrienne such wonderful news! 🍾🥂

Nothing for me this month but wasn’t surprised as I’ve won 4 months consecutively on holding of just below 15.4K.

Neddevine · 04/06/2024 14:06

Amazing win@GOTBrienne!!
DH won £300 and I won £100.

Still dreaming of a big win!

Cantbelieveit888 · 04/06/2024 14:18

Not great with 4xFH bur still fun
£50
£350
£150
£275

skyeisthelimit · 04/06/2024 14:26

Last month I won £100 + £50. This month nothing again , and bonds had "2K more in them.

I won £950 in total last year, and this year 6 months in, have won about £200 to date and on more bonds, so not looking good.

SilverBirch99 · 04/06/2024 15:53

FH for me won £0 , Dh has £28k and won £25.

AllRevvedUpWithNoPlaceToGo · 04/06/2024 16:09

GOTBrienne · 04/06/2024 08:05

So, I posted yesterday that I thought I saw myself on the big list, right amount, time, area. But the number for the bond was wrong, so close. Anyway I couldn’t sleep as I was desperate to check and….I had a look in the dark…

it was me. I won £50k.

It says they will send a form out to have it paid. No idea what we will do. I haven’t been able to work for the last decade as I am a carer, so it probably becomes my pension money. But I haven’t slept!
Can’t believe I found out from the app!

That’s amazing, congratulations!

SingaporeSlinky · 04/06/2024 16:24

100 for me on 6k

I’ve just put a bit into starter funds for the kids - how do others handle wins? Say one child wins 1000 and the other wins nothing, is it just the way it goes, or would you even them up once they get signed over to them at 16?

Oneblindmouse · 04/06/2024 17:04

£50 for me on FH. That brings total so far this year to £800. Congratulations to @GOTBrienne
