PREMIUM BONDS - MAY 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 10:23

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs in April 2024 - so 1994 since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

Nothing for the 2nd month running. PP has had a 10% return already which is amazing

space99 · 04/06/2024 08:40

Well done to the winners! Big fat zero for me on 28K, £100 for DH on 30K and £150 for DS on 25K. Don’t think there has been a month that we all have a win on.

AllTheNaps · 04/06/2024 08:40

Second month running and nada on 30k 🥴

swissrollisntswiss · 04/06/2024 08:45

@GOTBrienne congratulations! I won 50k last month, I still can’t believe it.

DH and I both have the full holding and won £575 between us this month.

ajandjjmum · 04/06/2024 08:45

Brilliant @GOTBrienne - how exciting!

£325 on FH
Zero on £41K+
Zero on £8K

KohlaParasaurus · 04/06/2024 08:45

Congratulations @GOTBrienne 🍾

Eaumyword · 04/06/2024 08:52

Awesome to the big winners! We got £1k which is very exciting indeed! Will just get absorbed into necessary household expenses, boo, but I think we should treat ourselves to a meal out for our anniversary on it 💕

SuzyQ12 · 04/06/2024 08:53

Congratulations @GOTBrienne that's brilliant!

evilharpy · 04/06/2024 08:56

@GOTBrienne that's amazing, delighted for you!

mrsbyers · 04/06/2024 08:57

Nothing for me this month , pulling half out to use up ISA allowance then will continue to save on there til next April

WhyDoesItAlways · 04/06/2024 09:00

Nothing for me or DS on circa 10k each.

Love reading all the wins everyone has but also keep posting the loses - makes me feel not so alone!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/06/2024 09:13

GOTBrienne · 04/06/2024 08:05

So, I posted yesterday that I thought I saw myself on the big list, right amount, time, area. But the number for the bond was wrong, so close. Anyway I couldn’t sleep as I was desperate to check and….I had a look in the dark…

it was me. I won £50k.

It says they will send a form out to have it paid. No idea what we will do. I haven’t been able to work for the last decade as I am a carer, so it probably becomes my pension money. But I haven’t slept!
Can’t believe I found out from the app!

Oh @GOTBrienne That's amazing

Ans guessing you will be our months winner

Well done

Oh wow Brienne, that's amazing!

Bad luck Blondes. It seems like a long time since you had a non-winning month!

I've been incredibly lucky on low holdings

Yes I've won for the last 6mth

Dec to May. Not June

But love reading those who have won whether £25 or £50k

Life changing !!!

girlmeetsboy · 04/06/2024 09:31

Congrats @GOTBrienne thats an incredible win you must be thrilled!!

Thedurrells · 04/06/2024 09:44

I won £50 again on 15k holdings. I win something most months so think I'm quite lucky, whereas DH has never won despite having premium bonds over a year now 😂.

GoodlifeGlow · 04/06/2024 09:44

If anyone is interested in long term returns on the PB we have 3x FH invested for the last year.

Our overall return was 3.6%, but actual return was 4.5%, 4.1% and 2.2%

Average monthly payout to the family was £445, on each holding it averaged at £205, £170 and £90.

Biggest win on one holding was £1100.

It’s a below average return but tax free so for us it makes sense and we enjoy checking the results each month.

Wowsers! That's amazing, well done!

SandDollar27 · 04/06/2024 10:03

£100 on £8,500 so really pleased.

CaveMum · 04/06/2024 10:16

I've just totted up our return since we had our first eligible draw in November. We've won £2,425 on 2x FH, so a return of 2.4% so far. Allowing for the tax free status of the winnings the equivalent rate of about 3% on normal savings. Seeing as you can get around the 5% mark fairly easily at the moment it's not great.

But then there's the hope that we all might be as lucky as @GOTBrienne!

clary · 04/06/2024 10:16

Wow @GOTBrienne amazing!

Hope it really makes a difference to your life

Interesting! I was also recently looking at ours for 2023 (we live abroad where it’s taxed 😩)

Both DH and I have the full holding. I won £1,650 and DH won £1,625 so 3.3% and 3.25%. Below the current average of 4.4% but still more than we’d get elsewhere.

ThePoshUns · 04/06/2024 11:12

Wow @GOTBrienne that's fantastic and sounds much needed. That's lovely for you.
