Just curious to see what’s normal. We got on ladder a bit late (early 30s) we have since moved so in a house that we see as our forever home / most expensive we will own.

we currently have approx 45% equity in home worth around 425k (east midlands).

Runningover · 02/09/2023 11:40

Nwka · 02/09/2023 11:41

CissOff · 02/09/2023 11:44

CherryBlossoms88 · 02/09/2023 11:46

37 years old with 98% equity. House worth just under £1m. Definitely not in the norm

Nothing. I don't own property as could never afford it with student debt in my 20s and 30s and now prices are unaffordable on one wage.

There is no normal

blahblahblah1654 · 02/09/2023 11:49

Hopefully 20% by next year. We only had a 5% deposit

Icannotthinkofaname · 02/09/2023 11:55

Just over 70% which is 165,000. Due to price rises this is actually more than we paid for the house, we have stayed in our "starter" home.
Three bed end terrace. I've never felt need to move, everyone has some to sleep no need to pay for rooms we don't need.

CatsOnTheChair · 02/09/2023 11:56

It totally depends where you live.
Your equity is worth more than our entire house.

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 11:56

tbf someone aged 45 will have experienced a very different house market to someone who is under 40.

LovelyQuiche · 02/09/2023 11:58

41, 30% equity. Didn’t buy till I was 36 cos of house prices

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 11:58

we have about 40% but we were helped onto the London ladder, couldn't have bought without it & would have been priced out later.

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 12:02

We got on ladder a bit late (early 30s)

that's not late for London

Hollyhead · 02/09/2023 12:04

I’m 40 got on the ladder with shared ownership at 24 moved once at 28 to a ‘normal’ house. Own about 80% of it now, but may have one more move to do depending on finances over next 2-3 years.

DelilahBucket · 02/09/2023 12:07

I'm 38 with about 65%. 15% deposit but we extended which had a big impact on the value plus we managed to overpay quite a bit a few years ago.

MinnieMountain · 02/09/2023 12:08

Age 36 we had 100% equity in the house we bought on a 15% deposit aged 28, we bought a more expensive house in the same area and had 100% equity again aged 43. But that’s down to our household income being high relative to the cost of property in our area (Peterborough).

Xrays · 02/09/2023 12:10

Surely this is completely dependent on so many things…? Income / where you live / how big your house is / what’s important to you etc… 🤷‍♀️ We have no mortgage, we’re 36 and 42, so owned outright; but we live in a cheap ish area, our house is worth about £300k and we are fairly low income. We could theoretically move to a more expensive house and get a mortgage and then have % equity etc but we aren’t bothered about having a bigger / nicer house. We enjoy spending money on eating out and holidays.

cadburyegg · 02/09/2023 12:11

House worth about 370k. Mortgage 140k so 230k equity, so 62%

AndrexPuppy · 02/09/2023 12:11

Mid 40’s. Own it outright, it’s worth around £900k. Mortgage paid off in the last 8yrs (combination of high household income, investments and being on the property ladder since I was 18 and DH was 24). I accept this is not the norm.

budgetingnovice1993 · 02/09/2023 12:13

I am 36 next month, owned since 2017 and I own 45% equity.

JorisBonson · 02/09/2023 12:14

38, owned for 4 years (I was a FTB, DH's second). Approx 28% equity.

KevinDeBrioche · 02/09/2023 12:15

Almost 95%. House worth around £850k but we bought at a very good time and are four properties in.

Bellyblueboy · 02/09/2023 12:30

40 - c 60% equity. Used to be much higher but recently moved.

there is no norm. I am single so am doing it on one salary. But bought my first place at 25 and am now on my third home.

Flowersforbees · 02/09/2023 12:33

Probably about 50-60%

House worth 700k, maybe more. We've done a lot of work to it.

Age 35.

When we remortgage in 4 years hope to have 75% equity.

I think we're very lucky and not the norm.

ScarlettBeauregarde · 02/09/2023 12:36

I’m 35 from SE, currently have 35% equity at a little over 200k. First bought in 2016, although we moved once and ported in 2020.
