When my winnings took my holding over £50k they just put it in my bank account. I do find that a bit strange.

Ohmylovejune · 20/09/2023 15:46

Late draw I'd imagine.

It could be someone went over 50k. Easy to do if you buy 50k and never knew, or forgot, Aunt Doris bought you a £1 bond as a christening present.

Or it was bonds for someone in probate and it was realised the winning was after 12 months, which is the maximum prizes can be won after a death if kept in bonds. My Mums probate was really simple but it was still 12.5 months before Dad was able to get the bond money with probate. Some no doubt take much longer.

Well done! Hopefully not the other option...a scam.

Can't see it being a scam as it is an actual letter and the funds have been deposited direct into the bank (we don't reinvest as we have MH).

Strangely enough I seem to recall something similar happening to us several years ago?!?! 🤔

PriamFarrl · 20/09/2023 17:11

I remember someone on one of the old threads saying that they had had a letter giving them a prize as the other person couldn’t have it. Everyone said it didn’t happen like that, yet it seems it might.

Ohmylovejune · 20/09/2023 17:11

You must be the lucky minesweeper of missed prizes! Well done!

MistyMorningMelons · 20/09/2023 17:33

boatgirl81 · 20/09/2023 13:47

How bizarre, how can they not be eligible? Also how have they chosen you to double your prize and not simply redrawn it again? Congratulations on the prize though!

It does happen. My DH has this once. He didn't win in the main draw and then we got an email or something a few days later saying he'd received a bond that couldn't be paid to someone else. I think I googled at the time and the concensus seems to be that it's death/estate related.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 20/09/2023 17:42

NS&I paid me my dad’s bond money before I got probate. They were the quickest and the easiest to deal with.

Ohmylovejune · 20/09/2023 17:47

Oh, really? They were a nightmare for us.

Mum had some bonds and a few premium bonds so went over £5k so that's why they wouldn't release before probate. That's not our issue though, that's their rules, which is fair enough.

They were just so slow in replying to anything. Far, far, slower than all the others. Although we got there in the end and back in early 2022 the interest rates were so low that a bit of extra time didn't matter too much.

RoyalImpatience · 20/09/2023 22:31

I'm trying to track good bonds, i always thought we had some when I was very small but it's been hard to find the in line form to try and find them.

Ohmylovejune · 20/09/2023 23:41

We wrote with a list of addresses and names (maiden name and marriage date and new name). Luckily Mum only ever lived in 3 houses in her lifetime. We did it by letter. They traced 12. Dad has some paper counterfoils but no names on them.

Nationwide have a launched a savings account that pays 8% interest:

Hopefully NS&I will increase the prize fund rate again from 4.65% because at the moment there seems little point me having my savings with them now that this is the best time in a decade to be a saver. I would love to know the figures for how many people this year have transferred their holdings.

Building society’s regular saver for current account holders is one of a growing number paying 6% interest or more

Babytwodue · 21/09/2023 16:39

Me too @benfoldsfivefan!
I recently moved some money into a Santander Edge 7% account, it’ll earn me £280/year guaranteed whereas I’ve had a few thousand in since Oct 22 and then increased to 10k in April and returned £50.
I’m currently on mat leave and will be withdrawing from premium bonds to top up my pay rather than my savings 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ohmylovejune · 21/09/2023 17:10

I expect its a regular saver with a maximum saving per month. Worth doing but not a home for a large sum.

I've also been moving savings into better accounts. Some base rate linked to save having to change them regularly

CaveMum · 21/09/2023 18:12

The Nationwide account is a regular saver only available to existing current account holders - you can only pay in a max of £200 per month.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/09/2023 15:14

How the heck do I buy a 6.2% bond when my debit card won’t let me spend that much 😰

CaveMum · 22/09/2023 15:29

@JayAlfredPrufrock you have to check if there are limits on how much you can pay be debit card. We found out that Mastercard limit you to £25k per card per day by default so we had to buy a number of smaller bonds instead of one big one. There’s no limit to how many bonds you can own, just that you can’t hold more than £2million in total.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/09/2023 15:40

Oh thanks for that. I’ve been trying to find out how many bonds I can buy. Currently on hold to NS&I

Now I just need to know the limit on my card …,..

CaveMum · 22/09/2023 16:01

@JayAlfredPrufrock no worries. If you have an NS&I saver account you can find the bonds from there (and you can pay into that via bank transfer instead of by debit card). However if you don’t have one already I believe it can take up to 10 days for them to approve an application so it friends if you are comfortable waiting and risking the Bond being pulled.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/09/2023 16:39

I don’t. Managed 20k purchase just now and will continue with that. 🤞 they don’t pull it.

I’ve already got an Investec at 6% but that’s no longer available.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/09/2023 16:40

Hopefully as I’ve got Premium Bonds they won’t have a problem approving it.

boatgirl81 · 25/09/2023 09:47

The excitement is starting to creep in now, could really do with a lovely win. Is Saturday the day to expect a visit?

slithytoveisascientist · 26/09/2023 18:53

Going to hold myself accountable here

If I don't get at least £150 I'm yanking £25k out and putting it into a fixed rate savings account

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/09/2023 18:57

I’ve just spent 5 days buying the fixed rate bonds. Took forever with a dodgy Wi-Fi.

RuthTopp · 26/09/2023 21:36

I managed to get the bond set up yesterday. It was faffy but not to hard.
