Universal credit managed migration thread

1000 replies

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

Sorry to hear how it affected you over the holidays @Angel0510 but, I am certainly not surprised!
Thankfully, you've done the hard bit and I hope it goes well moving forward.

It really tarnished our Christmas, gaffygoose. We had to apply before 6th January and so applied on 27th December. The application process seemed ok and didn't have to upload anything. However, my husband skipped through all the "work search" questions, (he's not the most patient of people when it comes to form filling on a phone!) and so that section says 'not provided'. He's self employed, has had a profitable business for 16 years, but he still hasn't had a request to make an appointment at the job centre. Possibly because they're trying to catch up after the holiday period. I'm not working and have my appointment this Thursday.

Surely if he wants the benefit he needs to do all that is asked of him? Personally don't think UC is good if you are self employed.

Bromptotoo · 09/01/2024 18:00

@Angel0510 If your DH is self employed then UC will need to be convinced that his Self Employment is real and a proper means of support. You say he's been doing it for years. There's a significant amount of HMRC information visible to UC and it may be they can draw their conclusions from that.

No guarantee he won't need to go to JC+ though.

He has done all that has been asked of him. My point was that it asked him about searching for work and he didn't provide this information as he's already working full time and so wasn't relevant to him. He had already stated that he was self employed.

Yes, he's just received his appointment at around half four this afternoon. He's not worried about it at all as he has run a profitable business and looked after a family of five/four for the past 16 years... albeit with help from child tax credits and occasionally working tax credits. His accountant has been to ensure everything is up to date and in order so that he is completely prepared for his appointment.

Timeforanewnam · 09/01/2024 18:42

We have applied today- accepted both our ids , so hopefully will be smooth

they won’t let me apply for an advance online - I’m hoping in a few days I willl be able to.

I did save a little bit just for this next month in case we had issues, but it will be a long time until payday if we can’t get an advance 😬

im hopefully it won’t delay a cost of living payment either the switch at so close a date until the next one - but time will tell

Thanks for that... and hoping you just bite the bullet and complete your application...it does give you a sense of moving on... although I know there are more hurdles to jump. My thoughts are, this initial phase is probably the most disruptive... maybe three months down the line it will seem a little more settled when much of this is sorted. Although I know due to husband's self employment it'll be up and down... but I guess that's the nature of self employment.

megletthesecond · 09/01/2024 18:49

Ah, does that mean my COL payment might not happen in Feb after all as I'll be mid transition?

catskittens · 09/01/2024 19:09

so do you open a special account when you are asked to move from TC to UC??
thanks

I think self employment on Uc can be a bit of a nightmare.

Jellykat · 09/01/2024 20:17

Bloody nightmare today. I'm employed and self employed, which i knew would flummox them. (Was fine with WTC however) I wasnt allowed to click on both!

Will you be available to look for work 35 hours a week? No im at work..
Can you travel for up to 90 minutes? Yes but i dont drive, and the bus leaves hourly from 9.10, last bus home is 6.00..

But the best bit was i was never asked to input my earnings.. i went through page by page waiting for the relevant dates they needed to know about, it never happened!
The helpline said the 'my earnings' section was complete, but how?.. They deduced it mustve been a glitch with the server after this morning.. but he and i couldnt access the result of how much they think i earnt and we couldnt try to input the real answer via 'make a change'. Total mess!!

I knew it was going to be horrendous! Angry

How so?

Angel0510 · 09/01/2024 20:48

well there's an intial interview/ meeting to check you are gainfully self employed. your partner should be ok if business well established. Then there is the minimum income floor which you are treated a earning even if you don't and they base your Uc payments on that.

Yes, I've read about the mif. I completely accept that some months we might get nothing but others maybe something. That's the ups and downs of self employment I guess. From what I gather, the mif is minimum wage x 35 hours per week...

Liveandforget · 09/01/2024 23:31

Mine just said, watch out for migration letter, is this normally what happens or do i need to apply?

Jellykat · 09/01/2024 23:40

So the minimum income floor is £18,964 a year?? = £364 a week?

Don't quote me on that, I've just read quite a bit about it and that's the general take I get? My husband has his interview next week on Friday afternoon so I can post afterwards on how it went if it's any help?

Pigeonqueen · 10/01/2024 08:25

We still haven’t received anything about migrating- is there a date we’re supposed to hear something by? (No migration notice as yet)!

megletthesecond · 10/01/2024 08:29

pig you'll get a letter with a deadline date. They seem to vary between 3-4 months.

treedragon · 10/01/2024 09:03

Hi,

in a similar position here. I’m debating on whether to bother migrating at all. Do TCs just stop and you drop off the radar so to speak?

Ok thank you. I’m getting worried they’ve forgotten about us and tax credits will just suddenly stop.

Pigeonqueen · 10/01/2024 10:19

Sorry name change fail! I keep forgetting I’m on here as my old name…! 🤦🏼‍♀️🙈

Yes. Unless they chase you for overpayments etc.
