Universal credit managed migration thread

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

When I'm applying for universal credit it's asking my childcare providers. Fine.
It then asks me what I've paid them?!
Surely it doesn't want me put each payment I've made over the year?!
I have to book them all separately as it's a holiday club there's days of them. Not just one chunk.
Perhaps I should put the latest one down.
Has anyone else had this?

purpleme12 · 17/10/2023 19:48

Am I supposed to put in every separate payment I've made to childcare this year?

purpleme12 · 17/10/2023 19:50

Because my childcare costs are ad hoc in the holidays.
I'm going to have to call them tomorrow aren't I
Really thought this would be straightforward

8dayweek · 17/10/2023 22:29

@purpleme12 You don't need to put in every Childcare payment you've made so far this year - but you will need to report each Childcare payment you make moving forwards.

purpleme12 · 17/10/2023 22:41

@ok so I can just put my latest payment I made? (From summer holidays)
I'm ok with sending them across future payment details. In fact it's better for me as it will be more accurate cos mine aren't the same each month

How long was your appointment for self employment?

The actual appointment was about 10 mins (but probably due to my situation as i'm also a carer).

megletthesecond · 18/10/2023 07:49

What info do they need at the appointment?
I've got until January so want to be organised. I've had the same employer and PT work hours for 13yrs, own my house, no childcare, mid rate DLA for teen. Will it just be all my bank statements?

purpleme12 · 18/10/2023 19:56

I put in my latest payment amount to my childcare provider.

On my to do list is send proof of payment.
And proof of childcare provider.
I presume an invoice or photo of the emailed booking is ok for this?
So it's just so they can see it's legit and you've done it?

Now I've answered all the initial questions, does this mean tax credits are aware I've done it and my tax credits have stopped?

catrescuelady · 18/10/2023 20:07

@whonickedmyusername
Do they keep your bank statements? Also did you take much in for your self employment? Seems daft printing loads of stuff off when they know you are a carer so not going to GSE.

purpleme12 · 18/10/2023 20:08

And should I put a note in my journal explaining that my childcare costs are school holiday costs and so they vary? And I've just included my latest payment?
Or is that not necessary?

purpleme12 · 18/10/2023 20:37

I don't even want these childcare costs paying from them as they're from the summer holidays. I just put them in because it asked me about my childcare costs.

Does anyone know about my questions please

Rummikub · 18/10/2023 21:40

I guess it makes sense to add a note to your journal saying this.

Rummikub · 18/10/2023 21:41

Also when I applied I got a tax credits letter saying my tax credits had stopped as id put in a UC claim.

No. Very annoyingly I printed up everything they requested (months worth of info) and they looked at the top pages. For SE info I think I just took my tax/UTI details and a statement with my payments. I can't vouch for how thorough they'll be at your Job Centre though 🤔

pissyrascal · 18/10/2023 23:05

@purpleme12 UC works as a monthly snapshot of your circumstance so if you have paid for childcare within the month of your assessment period then you would declare it and should receive help towards your costs via the childcare element of UC

MansfieldLark · 19/10/2023 10:57

Will I need to send them a copy of my payslip every month if it never changes and I get paid on the same day ?

Danikm151 · 19/10/2023 13:23

@MansfieldLark no. UC gets the figures from HMRC.

HuminaHumina · 22/10/2023 17:11

I’ve just had my first payment for UC having gone through the managed migration. Things I didn’t realise:

  • tax credits stop immediately. Waited a stressful 45 mins on the phone on the day they were due to be rudely told they were done with me and I should’ve known this.
  • <5 mins on the phone to speak to a UC advisor who told me I could get an advance to tide me over. Very patient. Very kind. I actually cried.
  • Any help I previously got with prescriptions and dental ceases as I earn over ~£931/mth. (Although since found out I can apply for a HC3 due to low income which partially helps with costs.)
  • I lose 55p in every pound I earn over ~£631
This month due to a backdated pay rise I’ve lost all 6 months back pay to the 55p/£1 rule and been walloped for 12% NI which I don’t usually earn enough to pay. The latter not being the fault of UC I know. It just feels very difficult to better yourself on UC and I feel very trapped if I’m honest. Seems unfair that health cost exemption rules aren’t the same for both benefits.
Rummikub · 22/10/2023 17:34

What does mean about 6 months back pay? That the pay rise has been wiped out effectively?

if it’s backdated pay rise then is it better to have it included under the previous tax credits claim?

HuminaHumina · 23/10/2023 16:39

That’s interesting @Rummikub thank you. How do I make that happen? UC say in my payments section that they take my monthly pay in real time from HMRC and use that to calculate the next monthly award. I’d ask in my journal but they don’t seem to reply. I told them my DS was turning 16 next month but will stay in full time education. I think they continue to pay until the end of the following August but didn’t want to take that chance! That was 2 weeks ago and not heard anything.

StarShine85 · 23/10/2023 17:54

Good Afternoon,
I have recently received my first UC award after the managed migration.

I believe I am fairly clued up on the basics of the transitional protection calculation but cannot seem to get mine to add up.

My transitional protection amount is larger than my previous tax credit monthly amount, which has created a much larger total payment than I was expecting.

I think this must be a mistake, but wondered if anyone knew of or has experienced a similar situation and could offer any reasons as to how/why this would happen?

many thanks.

AutumnCrow · 23/10/2023 17:56

How much backdating was included, @StarShine85?

StarShine85 · 23/10/2023 18:18

There doesn’t appear to be any mention of backdating, do you know if it specifically states if there is backdating included?

I applied for UC on 23/09 and it has calculated my entitlement for the month. Tax credit payments stopped the Weds after I submitted my claim. I was receiving tax credit payments weekly prior to this.

Thanks.

Rummikub · 23/10/2023 19:49

I applied a couple if days before and still waiting. Also my coach is an hour away in a different city!

Rummikub · 23/10/2023 19:51

@HuminaHumina

I have no idea o was just musing.

it would make sense that UC would just take the monthly amount as reported by HMRC.
